Hey Erin, I stumbled upon your video, and I am so glad I did. I'll actually be going back to school in March for Graphic Design and art with a concentration in UX design. I wanted to know what you think the most effective way I should start building my portfolio in between this time. Any insight would be great. Thank you
Hi Ellie, my advice for getting started in building a portfolio is to first, learn the principles of UX design www.uxdesigninstitute.com/blog/ux-design-principles/ (here's a blog article to help) and practice designing! How can you get started practicing design? A great approach is to create a product from start to finish.Cover these steps when designing your first product careerfoundry.com/en/blog/ux-design/the-ux-design-process-an-actionable-guide-to-your-first-job-in-ux/. You will want to build a case study around that product. Your portfolio will be made up of 3-4 of these projects. If you're interested in 1:1 mentorship from me, here's a link for that. superpeer.com/erinkate :) Hope this helps!
I hope this will help me in my upcoming project. Thank you for sharing ❤❤
You’re welcome 😊 good luck!
Very helpful.
Glad I could help!
You are so fun to watch! Think I knew most of this stuff but just hearing it from your perspective helped me see things differently! Once I get this into a web portfolio, can I share it with you for feedback?
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that. I offer mentoring & feedback sessions on Superpeer superpeer.com/erinkate
truly great
Thank you!
Hey! I loved your video. This was probably the only video that provided a roadmap. However, I have a question. As a complete beginner in UX design, how do I choose case studies? Can it be hypothetical because I have not done any real-life projects for any client? Hypothetical in a way that I just choose any app and identify a problem with it and then work on it? I am just stuck here. Your input would be great. Hope to get a reply from you! Thanks a lot xx
What a great resource! However, I think beginners should probably at least have taken some general courses before really diving into this video. It's a bit fast-paced and there is a lot of lingo that could use some pause and elaboration (wireframes, affinity mapping, SWOT, etc), but I am thankful for this template and for you to have taken some time to do this!
Please make the whole Product Design tutorials step by step with real-world examples.
Building products on Figma, for example?
@@imerinkate Yeah in Figma, like Mobile Apps or websites
Got it. I will work on a video for that. 👍🏻
@@imerinkate Thank you so much 😊
Amazing
Thank you!
Hey, thanks for this video!! I appreciate the content!
I have a question though:
Where do you actually make your case study? (Like actually typing the content) In square space? In Figma?
Really good question. I’ll usually create a rough draft in Figma to get a good idea of the order of my case study sections, but I always build them out on my Squarespace website because it looks clean and professional (as opposed to exporting a Figma png and uploading to Squarespace).. hope that helps!
Hi Erin thank you for this video.😊 I just like to ask how I would start with my case study on creating your own smoothies, like step by step guide using
Empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test. I am using Figma right now & I am about to start my bootcamp but I need to finish this before I start. Thanks again😊
I think this article will be of help (if replace tea with smoothies!) apoorvg1.medium.com/ux-process-explained-simply-just-like-making-tea-e40894b7c304
Thank you for the article Erin.😊 It’s a big help. I really appreciate everything you do helping people! 😊👍🏻

How should someone looking to become a UI designer structure their cast studies?
Firstly, I’d really consider if you want to niche yourself in UI (without UX). The job market is really competitive and having both skills opens up more roles to apply to. Secondly, when creating a UI case study you really want to focus on telling the story/journey of the product’s evolution and articulate why you made the UI decisions that you made. Be sure to incorporate things like who you are designing for and how that impacted your decisions, any pre-existing product data that may have played a role in decision making, designing for accessibility, if you based your designs on any guidelines, etc. Then, drive home how your UI designs had an impact on the company/KPIs etc.
@@imerinkate Thanks Erin. I'm currently doing a Graphics Design with UX elements. Definitely pays to be versatile. Sometimes it seems like an employer wants you to be all three.
Did you build the website?, am curious how you got the information to fit in so nicely and responsive.
I built my website, yes
@@imerinkate Oh was it not Squarespace?
I did build on Squarespace. This video is aimed at creating a case study, not building a portfolio website. It educates people on the layout, information needed, and process of designing your case study. You would then take this design from Figma and use it as a guide when building out the case study on Squarespace. @@aaj9722
Can you please share your UX portfolio? Thank you!!
Hey there! A lot of my projects are NDA so I only review with hiring teams. My website is www.erinkateuxui.com (hasn’t really been updated in a few years) :)
Where to create case study? In figma?
Hello, I like to create my first draft in Figma then I use that to build it out in a website builder (I use Squarespace).
Its a good video but, this wasn't the Google UX design method. Where the standard is from brainstorming to launch process and it also has some other side elements to it which dive more in-depth ux research to product launch
Hey there, I did not do Google’s UX certification course. Design methods vary, so this is an example of one approach. It works well for me and also landed me a job quickly.
