  • Picture this: you're exhausted after a long working day, and the only thing you can dream about is throwing yourself on the bed and blacking out. Not gonna happen! Instead, you're tossing and turning, trying to find the most comfortable position. Your mind gets plagued with endless thoughts, and even though you're worn out, sleep keeps eluding you! How come? The reason might be very simple - your seemingly innocent bedtime habits!
Sleep is extremely important for your body. It helps to restore energy, boosts your immune system, fends off depression, and decreases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Lack of proper sleep leads to daytime sleepiness, inability to concentrate, irritation, stress, and even high blood pressure! And if your insomnia drags on, you can get physically or mentally ill! So, try to avoid doing the things mentioned in this video before going to bed, and you'll feel way more rested and energetic in the morning and during the next day!

    SUMMARY:
    - Stop "watering" your body one hour before you hit the sack. Otherwise, you'll be bound to make one, or even a couple, of trips to the bathroom, which will rudely interrupt your sleep.
    - Avoid gimmicky alarm clocks that "shine bright like a diamond in the sky." To wake you up, an alarm clock needs to be loud, not bright.
    - It's a bad idea to eat right before going to bed, even if your dinner is light. Your body will still struggle to digest whatever you've fed it. Try not to eat anything 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.
    - Any rigorous physical activity late at night will negatively affect your sleep. Try to exercise at least 4 hours before going to bed.
    - Napping is an entirely normal, and often healthy, routine. But if your naps are regular and last longer than half an hour, they can mess up your sleep at night.
    - By buying a good, high-quality mattress, you literally invest in your bright (and healthy) future.
    - Thousands of people deal with stress and insomnia with the help of over-the-counter sleep aids. But it's not the best idea. Your body will most likely develop a tolerance to sleep medications; and pretty soon, they won't have any effect on you.
    - If the book you're reading is interesting, it's next to impossible to put it aside. You're more likely to keep reading until you finish it at the expense of healthy rest.
    - When it comes to sleep, it's crucial to have a routine and, even more importantly, stick to it.
    - You might be waking up with a sore back, red eyes, and a painful neck just because you haven't found the proper sleeping position yet!
    - The majority of people can't avoid thinking about work-related problems, to-do lists, and bills to pay before falling asleep. Unfortunately, these thoughts usually cause anxiety, which makes the quality of sleep way worse.
    - If your feet tend to get cold at nighttime, remember to put on a pair of warm socks before going to bed.
    - Do NOT drink coffee after 7 PM. I agree, it may sound a bit too obvious, but then you tell yourself that one tiny cup of espresso won't hurt, and there it goes...

just to explain the one about getting cold while sleeping: because there is a reduction in kinetic-energy, your core body temp will drop several degrees Celsius (which is normal), but if it's a particularly cold night and you allow your body temp to drop too much, then you risk getting hypothermia (a significantly dangerous drop in body temp). Had the experience once when i drank lots of ice water right before bed without showering first (since i already did earlier that day) and it was a particularly cold winter's night, woke up at 3am the next morning shivering like an earthquake and not knowing how to stop it. just to be clear, i didn't feel cold, sure it was a cold night, but i was snug in a blanket and duve. about a half-hour later my mom then made me a hot cup of tea, and not 5 mins later the shivering stopped completely. turns out, my body temp dropped dangerously low and triggered the shivering which woke me up.

There are 5 stages of sleep which last 5 to 15 minutes, the fifth stage is REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage, it's where you get the healthiest sleep, generally around the 90-minute mark. It's said to get the best nights sleep, always try to wake up at the end of a ninety minute stage even if you have to add 90 minutes several times, just make sure it's always at the end of a 90 minute cycle.

I drink a tiny bit of Lipton tea called " Stress Less". Camomile didn't do much for me but combined with Lavender it really does relax me and I sleep better. And the mattress tip is obvious. I was recommended to this mattress store that delivered a cheap version of what I picked out and bought. I went back to the store and without accusing the young salesman of lying and deceit, I convinced him to exchange it for the floor model of the mattress I picked out at first about $320. I suggested they throw in a free set of sheets to call the mishap even. Once home read the mattress tag, it was RECONDITIONED! But it's been a year and it has served me well.😉

I have trouble sleeping (and also stopping whatever i’m doing to sleep) so to help me i have a playlist of 6/7 songs or so (idk i didnt count) which is about 20 minutes and in a specific order to calm me down, starting with my favorite songs (Snowcone, Tantrum, similar) ending with Despair, Sweater Weather, and a song called 1: 45am (by No Rome, amazing song btw u should check it out) and when i get to that one i get myself in a comfortable sleeping position, turn the volume in my headphones all the way up, & i close my eyes while facing the screen & sitting still. It feels almost like listening to the radio in a car, with the visuals of the music video sort of flashing y like headlamps outside of a car window & a subtle almost unnoticeable rumbling in the background like a car engine, & it gets me ready to fall asleep. Sometimes when i’m really tired i fall asleep during the song with my headphones still on. The playlist also helps calm me down when i’m having a mental breakdown or an existential crisis or something like that. If i’ve stayed up really late i’ll just do the last 3 songs.

Contrary to what was said in the video, I need to have water handy to keep my mouth from getting dry. I don't drink a lot though. I'll usually wake up a couple of times during the night but usually will fall right back asleep.

I need to have a projection alarm clock so I can just open one eye to see what time it is projected onto the wall. This lets me know if I slept long enough before I start waking myself up. These clocks can be hard to find though they are dim enough. Mine is from Radio Shack
(Enough said) but I’ve seen them at Wal Mart

So delightful, and thank you ever so much. All of the ideas are so sound. However, I must confess, I do like to read a book every night whilst tucked into bed. Over 50 years of night time reading, then down with the book, off goes the light, and off to sleepy bye land. 'Twas quite thrilled when my husband picked up the habit and seemed to truly enjoy it. As did my lads. Learned it from my Dad.Bless his beautiful warm, loving and clever heart. It quiets the mind, and as long as you have a clock nearby, you shan't be up all night. Hey, some books are THAT fine !! LOL. Thank you for the rest of the info. Superb and BRAVO !!
