Straight up. I've been fiddling around with this thing a few days. Had one years ago that I gave up on. Decided I was old and stubborn enough to do it like a kid and basically make a chord/strum drilling lesson plan... then I stumble across this while I'm smoking...
I could cry. Thank you for simplifying it, going at a casual enough pace and providing enough foresight on screen to look and think ahead whole keeping rhythm.

@@tobykits much mahalo for this constructive comment. Love it! 😃🤙🏽
OMG!!! Ok, so I've been struggling with chords on the guitar as I've never really done them much, just finger picking, but a coworker said the ukulele was easier. I got it tuned up and this is the first song I've ever played fully through on either the guitar or the ukulele!!! And I've had the guitar for years!!! And I just bought the ukulele and here I am day 2 and I know 4 chords already and kept up with your play along even with the hard part where it was 2 tap strums then switch!!! Like, actually playing along as you sing!!! And I kept up!!! I've never done chords before!!! I always avoided songs with chords because they were too hard on the guitar!!! Day 1 and I was reliably getting my fingers in the right spot, and day 2, I'm here doing the whole song! Thanks man!!! I'm gonna look and see if you have more, especially if you have the whole entire song. I like that you have it on the screen and you also tell what's up next. I'm not even looking at my fingers as much now except the G6 and I don't have to keep looking at how to form those 4 chords since I remember. I'm so proud of myself thanks to you!!!
Oh, and EZ because you made it easy!!! THANKS!!!
🎉❤ 🎶 🎸 🎵 🪕 🎼❤ 🎉
What?!? Day 2!!!!!!! Yaaaaahhhhhhh! That’s so amazing foreal! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. Now that you got those four chords and that strumming pattern down, you can play more than 20 songs! Promise!
@@JJMilare lol, maybe. First I want to get down strumming while singing. And before that, I need to learn the song well enough that I don't need to look at the lyrics or listen to you to hear the tune, lol. I have heard the song here and there in passing, but since I got a ukulele, I decided this was gonna be the first song I learned 😆. Sometimes I have it then I do 5 instead of 4 and mess it all up or I stumble over the lyrics. I don't usually sing and play anything, so that's a whole new thing I'm training myself to do. Especially hard since I'm looking at both the lyrics AND the chords to play at the same time now. I would probably be further along if I did this every day. I just picked it back up today again and decided to add singing to the strumming. Also been messing up my F chord while singing because I'm playing in the dark and not always judging the distance well enough for the tabs... and... you know... adding the singing to it, lol. But I can totally play along with you no mistakes and I made it through the song with... occasional errors while playing and singing in the dark with only my phone to light up the room.
@@AliciaBrownSugar oh yeah! Singing and playing is another hurdle too! But as I always say, practice makes permanent! 😀. It will definitely take time and the more you do it will get easier. Sometimes I do stumble with my lyrics, timing, and strumming when I learn a new song. When I'm trying to learn a song, no rule of thumb is if I can play it 7 times without mistakes, then I got it!
This tutorial gave me the encouragement to order a ukulele!. Can’t wait for it to arrive so I can practice with this wonderful tutorial! Thank you for explaining it so beautifully!

Today is Feb. 14, 2023. I watched a lot of tutorials but I’ve just seen yours and it’s really easy . I really tried to know how to strum the chunky style but I still don’t know how to do it. And your voice is beautiful too, and you’re so humble. Thanks a lot.

Mahalo JJ, for this ez tutorial. I just got my ukelele a day ago, and am able to play this variation really well given this is the second song I am going for on the ukelele. The only rough patch is that when I attempt to sing along, it all comes apart 🤕; would you have any pointers for that?
All in all love it.
I second this challenge, any tops would be great. I’m thinking it may just have to be memorized w/ sight! Im almost there
Wow second song! Yay awesome! Much mahalo for learning here with me! Hmmm 🤔 as far as singing along tips, I’m not sure of any standard tips. But what I do is first play the song until it becomes almost just muscle memory as close as you can. So then if less of your concentration is on the playing part of the sing, more concentration can be on the singing portion. Also you can play along with the recording, and when you can, sing a word or two, or a phrase during parts where you think you can. Or maybe you can hum along while playing the song also, then add the words here and there as you are comfortable. Let me know if this helps!
@@JJMilare Thanks for replying JJ. I find humming along, to be working amazingly for me. Totally agree abt making the playing a muscle memory thing, to free up mental processing for the singing part. Great stuff, mahalo
@@karatechop89 alright!! I am glad that those techniques are working so far! 😃. Keep me updated on the progress! Much Mahalo again for learning here with me!
@@JJMilare Nailed it. I play this from memory.. Mahalo broda :D. Took a few days off the uke, and found that this came to me more naturally after the reset.

Yea!! Would love to see the performance!
Thanks for sharing these tips, im going to take this knowledge and play this song for my father in law, my wife requested it because it reminds her of him he passed away a few years ago and is spread on a cliff in hawaii, bitter sweet but its a goal thank you
Much Mahalo for sharing this story Alex. It's so touching for me to hear this and so happy that you will be able to honor him. I am also glad that I was able to help you with this. 🙂
Love it, but I do have some troubles.
First up: The Switch between G6 and F. How do you switch between them so fast and smooth?
Second up: Do you have any tips for the upwards strumming? I just can't do it.
Thanks in advance :)
For the strumming: try to use your index finger for the down strum, and your thumb for the up strum :)
And the switching is mostly practice..
Hope it helps!
Yes I agree, for the switching try to practice going between the two chords without strumming first just so you can get the motion down. Then once you’re comfortable with that, you can add the strumming. For strumming up yes you can use yiur thumb nail or your the fleshy part of your index finger. It might take some getting used to but after many many repetitions it will become second nature 😃
I feel like I missed a big part of the lesson, but it just skips over it😂
You taught how to play two notes together and then skipped to playing the whole song😂 not very helpful for a beginner
@@AlyssaAnneMakeup I see. That part was just to show you how to practice between chords. You can use that part and then add chords or takeaway chords. It is just to show how to practice and count the strum while changing chords :)
@@AlyssaAnneMakeup I would master the chords first. Then master the strum. Then put them together and master those before I start singing.
This was easy...thank you😊
Helped me alot
