It was performed it in November 1968 as part of what became to be known as the 68 Comeback Special. Originally slated to be a Christmas special, Elvis didn’t want to sing Christmas songs. If I Can Dream was his protest/statement song in response to the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK as well as resistance towards the Civil Rights Movement.

This was the original mic drop moment. Elvis was supposed to sing a Christmas song. He told the network that he was going to sing this song and they would not regret it. People in the studio said he walked on stage dropped this all time masterpiece on the American public in one take, turned around and walked off. It was said that he went back to his dressing room and broke down and cried, he literally put every drop of emotion that he had into this performance.

"If I Can Dream" is a song made famous by Elvis Presley, written by Walter Earl Brown[1] for the singer and notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech.[2] The song was published by Elvis Presley's music publishing company Gladys Music. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, just two months after King's assassination. The recording was first released to the public as the finale of Presley's '68 Comeback Special.

In the late-1960s, Elvis Presley wanted to return to his musical roots. He made recordings in Memphis, Tennessee with musicians and singers from the budding Soul music genre. Shopped for clothes where the black community shopped 'cause he loved the look. And sang in the black choir into the late hours after white church was over. There's many reasons why he sounds bluesy!!! I love him more now that I've found out these things about him than I did when I loved his music. I grew up on Elvis's music. Check out "In the Ghetto". He got a lot of hate for it from all races. But what he managed to do was bring attention to white folks the hardships of black folks in poverty level communities.
He could sing anything from rock, to blues to gospel to country. But his favorites had a bluesy feel to them because he grew up sneaking into the black bars around Mississippi. He loved and respected the black community and he knew at a young age that it wasn't right how they were treated. Elvis was a good man with a huge heart. He was also extremely generous with his money.
When he first came out, teen girls were in love with him, teen boys wanted to be him, and parents hated him because he gyrated his hips and made their daughters have bad thoughts LOL. He was even banned from having his music playing on stations around the US.

@@ikewp901 thank you for pointing that out. Yes, his first was Gospel.
I've seen an odd trend of bad history being spread by some Elvis fans out there in some youtube comments in the past saying - "Elvis first love was Country, then he moved towards gospel & blues later".
Nope. Country was certainly part of his influence, but Elvis himself addressed this early in his career. In 1957 interview he told the press - "My first love I would have to say would be colored spirituals" (referring to Gospel of coursel).
It's not fair to Elvis some fans came get this correct.
It's just nice to see like someone like yourself in comments actually get this right.

Elvis was nothing but soul. When a man can sing a song in such a way that makes people break down and cry for absolutely no reason other than the emotion that they are getting from the song......he has soul.
You should go back and watch James Brown interviews and see what he said about Elvis. They were close personal friends and James always professed his undying and unconditional love for Elvis.

Elvis grew up in black church and has a blues background. That and church gospels were the music that spoke to his soul. When MLK was assassinated Elvis took it hard since they were friends. He dedicated this song to MLK. He put all his heart and soul into it. He meant every word. He did this song in one take and when he was done he was wrecked. They found him curled in a ball crying his eyes out. He just wanted equality for everyone. His manager didn’t want him to sing the song saying it was too controversial but Elvis didn’t listen and sang it anyways because it was important to him and he wanted to get his message across.

This song was sung as a tribute to MLK and Bobby Kennedy who were both killed in 1968. He was close with both and felt very strongly about civil rights. Also, this song was sung at the end of his concert. Some he had already been performing for 2 hours before this song closed the night out. He could quite frankly sing anything.
