A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ CZcams. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of CZcams I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on CZcams won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

You have just witnessed a devastated Elvis singing out his soul to honor his assassinated friends, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Senator Bobby Kennedy who was also a fierce fighter for human rights and equality. Watch the video "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" and that will give you an good idea of how Elvis fought his heart out for the innocent downtrodden.. He grew up dirt poor and hung out with African Americans who loved him as much as he loved them. He was a force for good, and it hurts to see him called a racist. He was a courageous fighter all of this life. I love that man.

This. Colonel Tom Parker, his legendary greasy bastard of a manager, wanted him to close with a cheesy Christmas number. Elvis, for perhaps the only time in his career, put his foot down and insisted on this one. He was devastated by the state of the world around him, and gave us the Christmas gift of this enduring anthem to brotherhood.
You would have seen more soul out of Elvis but for his dysfunctional relationship with his manager. If I had a time machine and I could change one thing in rock history, I would go back to December of 1968, and just as Elvis said goodnight after this song, I would have put a shotgun up to Colonel Tom Parker's neck and blown his head clean off. The 70s would have sounded a lot different. We might even still have the king with us to this day.

Also because direct quotes and pieces of the MLK I have a dream speech were incorporated into the song. Years later the background singers say that they were crying because it was an emotional time for everyone and for the country.

Amazing...timeless. Also, the crew witnessed , I believe, 17 takes. In the leather suit, in the round.. Etc. One after the other. They said the best version he did lying down on his back. The released cut is the one he gets the lyric right " while i can think, while i can talk, --- stand,----- walk,.... They have it all in " the making of the 68' comeback special. Its a really cool behind the scene look at what went into producing this acclaimed show. Warning though. It shows everything. E turning to the camera giving a close up snarl. Over and over again. Etc..every take. Gets a bit monotonous. They mustve had the E fanatics in mind releasing that material. Still its really cool.

We went through the 70s, just rocking out and having fun. We hated the 60s madness. My Brother’s friend came home from Vietnam and hanged him self.

there is SO much to this song more today than ever before. We're lost in a cloud with too much rain. That speaks volumes. The pure and simple power in his vocals for this song. It was anger with sadness at the same time without being too emotional. He gave his all for this performance.

Same here. This is one of the greatest moments in the music history because he is totally into it as he delivers this powerful performance that reaches beyond the hardcore Elvis community. This kind of singing and precense is the reason for me becoming an Elvis fan. I just can’t stop watching and hearing this performance. It has such relevans and impact even in 2022.

However, the musical arrangement on this is such that when it changes tempo/octaves, your body should have an actual physical reaction, like goosebumps. Kinda like the big note in Celine Dion's version of All By Myself. There's a breakdown of it where they explain the science behind the notes. So chances are, if you don't feel anything with this song then you probably don't have much feeling for anything or anyone these days; and I'm really sorry for you 😔

This song Elvis did was more of a spiritual song. To me it has always sounded like a prayer, he was praying to God through it. Listen to some of his gospel albums. He won 3 Grammys during his career and they were for gospel music. I can't see any longer. I'm crying so much.

Elvis didn't fight civil rights. He was a performer and this song resonated with him, but to suggest he was actively and publicly fighting the cause is totally untrue.
@@hawaiiusa6147 he used his position to promote it both in this song and in In the Ghetto. In the 50s he absolutely brought black culture to the mainstream which in itself helped promote the cause of civil rights. Without him it might've taken longer for black voices to be heard.

I'm a fan of Elvis Presley. This song is absolutely my favorite hit. I've listened to this song a hundred times, but still I find myself crying. His voice was out this world on this track
When Elvis was going to do this special in 69', he was told to end the show with another song, but, due to the murder of MLK, he stood his ground and did this song. Elvis knew what it was like to be poor as a child and young teen, he knew the heartache of his fellow man, so it was so fitting he did this song for ALL of mankind. Every time I hear this song, I get goose pimples and cry. Such a wonderful line of lyrics to ponder.

Lucille Cumming: I first saw this performance when it originally aired on TV in 1968 and I cried uncontrollably. So much had happened that year. MLK, Bobby Kennedy, Vietnam, on and on. In retrospect, I don't know how any of us made it through that year with any sanity intact. This performance is still appreciated today by people of all ethnicities. The writer of If I Can Dream was Walter Earl Brown who said the song was based on Martin Luther King Jr's "I Had A Dream" speech. Thank God Elvis stood his ground against the Colonel and sang this song. Brown also said that Elvis told him, "I'm never going to sing a song I don't believe in". "I'm never going to make another movie I don't believe in." It really hurts when people accuse Elvis of being racist. He was anything but! I miss him so much. I was so happy when Trump awarded Elvis the Presidential Medal of Freedom award. I say that he should have received this award while he was alive but at least someone finally acknowledged him in this way. He deserved it for so long and it's shameful that Lisa Marie didn't accept the award on behalf of her father in person. Elvis' cousin Billy Smith said he was not asked to be the recipient but if he had been, he certainly would have accepted. Elvis was an amazing artist and humanitarian and he is so deeply missed. It was wonderful seeing the reaction while he was singing this song. Welcome to the totality of who Elvis Presley was! God bless

The comeback special aired on Dec 3, 1968. The Colonel, Elvis‘s manager wanted him to Close the TV event with a Christmas song. The Colonel did not want Elvis to sing songs that had political overtones. Elvis insisted that he sing the dream song.
And before the ‘68 come back he didn’t think people would be interested in his music. There will never be another Elvis❤️

Man what does it for me always is the sequence from 4:30 to 5:02. His soul just comes through especially at 4:30, that unique voice is just so soulful.

Especially after watching the ELVIS movie and hearing the back story of how impacted he was by Dr. King's murder and Bobby Kennedy's murder, standing up and fighting to end his '68 special with this beautiful song. In this performance Elvis shows us his soul, no pretenses or glitz, just raw emotion. This is my favorite of his performances.

I'm sitting here as a family member in awe seeing how many comments you have here as I read through many of them and I have to say everyone here all had amazing things to say about him when we lost him it was like the world itself just suddenly stopped turning I was only 12 years old at the time I literally hit the ground crying I remember crying out to God why why I'm so sorry I'm crying as I'm writing this it feels like it was just yesterday and now we lost Benjamin Elvis's grandson he committed suicide a couple years ago oh my God it hurts so bad I'm sorry I can't write no more

It’s funny how surprised people are when they realize the depths of Elvis and just how well he can sing.
At least for myself, I never really was a fan, while my grandma loved/s him, and we went to go see the Elvis movie. Obviously, there were creative freedoms taken, and things like that. But most of it was the truth, and I gained a new found respect for him. I heard a story from one of his band members, said the producers of this 68 come back special wanted Elvis to sing a christmas song for his last song. Elvis told them FUK you Im singing If I can dream for my friend Martin man ! And after the song he went back to the dressing room and fell on the floor in the fetal position and cried for a half hour. This song took it all out of him. He put everything he had into it. I was a teenager in Canada in 1968 and the murders of Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy hit me hard, too. And then as that awful year was ending we had the Elvis special and this song end it, and his powerful voice made a difference. This song is a standout and I'm glad the movie has more people discovering that he was more than another product of hype. His memory and talent will live on...
What gets me about this performance everytime I watch it, is after that stunning, passionate, powerful singing, his humble 'Thank you. Good night'. He knew how important the lyrics were after MLK's assassination send he didn't want to distract from it. This proves how great a MAN he was.

Every time I watch that performance I also get goosebumps. Yesterday I saw the movie Elvis and that moment was recreated, the actor Austin Butler was amazing. Elvis was preaching from the bottom of his heart. Great reaction!

I remember my mother letting me stay up to watch this 1968 "Comeback Special". My dad was in Vietnam at the time. She recorded it on a reel to reel tape deck and sent it to him.

This is the finale of his 1968 television special (Singer Presents “Elvis”) that was filmed in June 1968. In April of that year Elvis was strongly affected by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in his home town of Memphis. Then in June while filming the special, Elvis and the producers were having a meeting in an office and in that room was a small television. On that TV Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Elvis became adamant that he wanted to close the television special with a message. The song “If I can Dream” was written and my understanding is that it was inspired by Dr. King’s “ I have a Dream” speech. This song remains one of Elvis Presley’s most powerful performances.

Because of the greatness of this performance of this song, it was the first and last time he sung it live. This was also the only recording of it as well that was released on album. He never re sang it in studio either. This is that raw passion of the king

I was fortunate enough to see him in concert a few times, I was a young boy with a fanatic elvis mom. It's funny because I don't remember much of my childhood, but the 4 concerts I did attend, I remember them very clearly. One of them was his last performance in Memphis. It was that week we where there that we met and had dinner with his father Mr. Vernon Presley. It was a fluke thing and he welcomed us in like we where immediate family.

He sang this in the very early hours of the morning , there was no audience. You can tell he is totally immersed in the song, nothing else was relevant. No one before or since can come close. No one before or since sang as well as they looked. Simply devastating.

I saw him, men and women ... all of us stood for the full concert and screamed. I got to go to the edge of the stage, why they let me that was a miracle for me. He came in my direction, stood in front of me and looked at me. I thought I was gonna faint. my friend who wasn't a fan(yeah I know) she stood there throughout his performance and screamed. What got me is his voice, his presence, his class. He was do beautiful.

This was filmed on 3 June 1968. 2 months after the MLK assassination and just 3 days before RFKs death. It didn’t air till December 68. MLK was fresh on his mind when he did this. What a great tribute.
So when the Tragedy happened to Martin Luther King and Kennedy. This really touched him to hi soul so Elvis wanted to deviate from the What Parker was trying to get him to do and Elvis performed this master peice to try and start the healing of our torn nation. Long live MLK and Elvis who both left us way too early in life yet their legacy lives on in our hearts.
What’s different is it was a song with a message which Elvis usually stayed away from. He never spoke about politics because as he said, “I’m just an entertainer.”

Elvis wanted everyone United as one nation ..I was born may 6 1975.. my cousin was my moms delivery nurse and was trying to hurry her up to deliver me so she could see Elvis.. she made it and saw his last middle Tennessee concert .. I was born over 10lbs so my mom said she wanted to punch my cousin .. lol 😂 I think it was at MTSU .. Elvis died in 1977.. but I grew up loving his music and movies because of my story .. only I didn’t know or realize how great he was until I got older and could understand..

I love to watch people experience this song for the first time, and your reaction didn't disappoint! As a lifelong Elvis fan this is hands down my favorite song he recorded, that's the real, feeling man singing that song, not the persona that was built by others for him. He was singing out the pain of the tragic passing of Dr. King and all the strife of the world that was effecting him. Elvis was a loving and caring man and his heart is so evident in this performance! I've heard it hundreds of times in my life and it still moves me on a soul level every time! ✌️

This guy belonged to the people and I do mean all of the people regardless of race, grew up dirt poor and never forgot it..what a talent, gone way to soon.
My oh so smart son just informed me that Elvis is being forgotten. I don't believe it! I just watched the new movie and again I cried during the recreation of this song! I cry everytime I hear it. It still rings true today as it did back then. My son seems to think if he doesn't know about it, because he is 37, then it's not important in today's society. He thinks all youth in today's world is more hip and feeling than us old fogeys were in our day! It breaks my heart to hear him talk. I had to leave the room. I just don't want to be in his presence right now!

Well you reacted to "In the Ghetto" and "Elvis and the Black Community" so it shouldn't be surprising that Elvis was sensitive to issues of Civil Rights. He grew up in Memphis during a time when there was plenty of racism around. Yes, this has to be one of his best vocal performances. He was also a great Gospel Singer; he had three gospel albums and they were his only albums to win Grammy Awards. After his shows in Las Vegas, he would get the gospel singers together around a piano and sing old time gospel songs with them until it was almost daylight. He didn't want the singing to end. Part of him loved being in front of an audience, and part of him just wanted to stay in the peace of God. I keep thinking that if he could get away from the stage for awhile, and just find his peace in the Lord, he might still be alive today. Once a fan rushed to the stage with a crown. The fan says, "You're the King!" He said, "There's only one King, and his name is Jesus Christ".

“If I Can Dream” was in Honor of Dr. King, who was killed a few weeks before filming the 68 Come Back Special. Elvis had a lot of admiration and respect for Dr. King and his ideologies. Elvis had a hard time doing this show because of being distraught over the death of Dr. King.
“If I Can Dream” was not the “chosen” closing song the producers wanted Elvis to perform. Elvis stood his ground and told the producers he would perform “If I Can Dream”, or he would not do the show. Elvis didn’t care about the repercussions of breaking that production contract. He was going to Honor Dr. King with or without the production. He was serious and it showed in his performance.

I grew up all over the world, my Father was military but we always lived “off base” b/c he wanted us to learn about different cultures and such.
We returned to Albany GA around the time this came out.
I was shocked b/ c we had riots at the high school I attended and I couldn’t wrap my brain around the things I saw and experienced.
Elvis cared, I cared, and so many more people cared not only then but now too!

The movie changed everything I was ever told about Elvis. The only thing I really thought I knew was what Public Enemy said about him in Fight The Power and this song, that movie took all that and made me research the man I never knew about.
You just felt the power of his voice. I saw him live in concert baton Rouge Louisiana in 1974 all I can say is you had to be there. I'm 55 years old now and still listen to him .

Wow...I also saw Elvis in Baton Rouge, La. In 1974..I was 16. The best concert I've ever been to. The most beautiful man I've ever seen. I was four feet away from him for just a few seconds.
Elvis did gospel best. His gospel albums are amazing. I met him as a child in Germany. Hangin' out his barracks window, playing his guitar ,singing. He introduced himself and asked my sisters and I our names. 🥰
