WILD CAMPING IN WINTER WAS A MISTAKE

- We went wild camping in the winter in the UK on the South West Coast path in January. That was a mammoth challenge and way harder than we expected. We hike 35km across Dorset's Jurassic Coast from Swanage to Durdle Door, camping in a tent in freezing temperatures along the way for 2 nights. We battle storms, soaking wet sleeping bags, rollercoaster cliff paths and extremely long, cold nights!
00:00 Intro to our UK winter van life series

If you're new here, we're Tom and Iz, a couple who have been living in a van for the last few years. We've explored Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Romania in our little home on wheels, La Bamba. If you missed any of these series you can check them out in our playlists. We most recently got back from a 10 week trip to Nepal (without the van), trekking in the Himalayas. We are now creating our UK WINTER VAN LIFE series and we would love you to join us! We usually upload on a Sunday at 5pm UK time. Our aim for this series is to get out there and explore areas of natural beauty in the UK that neither of us have been to before, getting outside in the elements and making the most of our British winter! We think winter is beautiful and we can't wait to explore a bit closer to home.

April 28, 2023: Oh Isabelle that third fall when you chuckled I did too. A video from two years back that I watched today explained to me why both of you love hiking and gave a such incredible history of where you are visiting. You both are teachers in science. In the future, your students will be so motivated by your experiences and continue their own journey also. I’ve camped in the military in conditions such as this in tiny tents also. Great that you are warm for the sleep.
I think we all need to push ourselves that lit bit and enjoy what we have around us. Inspirational, you two 😇
Good effort the pair of you..always a joy seeing Iz swinging those arm's and bringing the happy vibe's..and great camera work and editing Tom as always 😀
Wow what an mazing experience. Feeling awesome after watching this. LOVE FROM NEPAL Guys
Yeah, I'm sitting here looking out at the grey sludge that passes for weather here in Ireland. I can so totally relate to that video. Never mind the Himalaya's with pristine, dry, cold and sunshine and spectacular colours. This is the real deal. Fair dues gang. Another brilliant video. Wind, rain, snow, mud, wet tents and all the time freezing. Yep, that was fun .... (to watch !!).
Absolutely loved this video, nutters!!!! 👍
Hard going when the weather isn't on your side and you're tired due to lack of quality sleep (Only die hards sleep well in tents).
You did it guys👏👏. Anyone that has walked the coast path in high winds knows the effort you endured. Izzy got stung on the bum...... I spat my tea laughing when she mentioned it🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks like you had a 'Fun' time walking around where I live. It really does have some fantastic views that, I suppose, I don't see anymore having always lived here. Glad you enjoyed it even in the rain and wind!
Hello Isabel and Tom, very much looking forward to your trekking the wilds of your native UK. First episode showed a rough situation with weather and rains, blustery to say the least !!! But you both stuck to the challenge. Now please , hope the Weather Gods cooperate on your next treks and destinations. Be Well and THANK YOU for sharing your adventures to the wild locations of your home country. Best always, Bernie -- in Minnesota USA
That wind was ferocious! Well done to you both 👏
Well done, impressed with your stamina, grit and positive attitude in the face of adversity (45mph winds). Great to see you continuing with your adventures. Take care, see you on the next video........xx
Engaging , educational and well edited. Better than some of the stuff we see on mainstream Tv. Love it !
Add some hot hands hand warmers in to your sleeping bags its heavenly with the cold weather up in Scotland
Iz and Tom, lovely to be tuned in with you again. Best of luck for fab adventures in 2023.
Hi Tom & Isobel, what a trek !!! Pleased you managed to get some decent food at the end. A well deserved medal each🏅🥇. Isobel gets the gold for her amazing trips 🙂. I hope you both stay warm, dry and safe, and that the weather improves. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventure.
Still no trekking poles? Haha I guess you need to learn this the hard way. You got no idea how much they help up hills or walking on the mud and other doggy areas :)
Yeah I dear day my bum would have been a fair bit less muddy if we had some poles! I’m starting to be won around
Great video, loved laying here under a nice warm duvet whilst you two put yourselves through hell for our entertainment. It’s an 11 out of 10 from me!
You should go to Anglesey in North Wales. Or you could walk the South Downs Way end to end from Winchester in the west all the way to Eastbourne (or the other way round).
Fair play to you both. That was a challenge! And you've also made a great film here. I really enjoyed it. Thanks
People underestimate camping in Winter in the UK. They see people on CZcams out there, on moors, up hills and mountains, nice sunsets, a bit of rain and snow. So off they pop! Forgetting that many contributors are only out for the night or two and have top of the range gear that will naturally be heavier than 3 season stuff. Several days and nights of cold wet weather, never getting fully dry or warm, your kit getting damp when you are setting up and taking down And just the effort of fighting the weather, as you two did, really takes it out of you. So massive respect for showing that.
It’s way to get overwhelmed and before you know it you are in trouble. If you are going out there in Winter, or consistently wet and windy weather, make sure your kit is up to it, you are up to it and you have a backup plan for if/when you get into trouble. Make you you and all your party know how to spot the early signs of going down with exhaustion, lack of hydration and hyper and hypothermia. Go, but be safe.
Amazing coastal images great content , what a great challenge so very inspiring take good care .....thank you 🇨🇦
Serious achievement, well done - and Iz retains her title of the most cheerful vegan on the planet.
Thanks guys, for an entertaining high quality vlog (as always) 👍
Great vlog - well done for pushing through the cold, wind, and rain!
You guys are very resilient. I would not want to take on a walk like that in winter. I hope you got the bus back to your van. Hope you're toasty warm again now. Have a great week. 🥰🔥💚
Well done ..what a challenge, Great video and more memories for you both to cherish 👏👏
Hey Tom & Iz. Great to have you back in familiar landscapes. Take care and enjoy. You too are brave, very gutsy and your determination is overpowering. I walk huge distances guys and I never allow the weather to depress or deter me. We’ll done you too. Iz, your spirit and wit never seems to wane.
Really enjoyed this . Full of enthusiasm, information and humour. It felt really professional. 👍👍
Thank you for sharing how beautiful the UK is. Best wishes 😊
Great to see you both out and about again! Well done, the weather looked absolutely brutal! Can't wait to see more of your trips around the UK 😍
Hi guys. Great effort going up and down those hills. Nice to see you out and about again.Take care.
Another fabulous adventure it was funny ye both slipping on the mud but I’m so glad ye made it onwards snd upwards ye keep going. Beautiful scenery along the way
Well done to both of you. 👏👏
Hi guys you are amazing putting yourself through all of these challenges and you come out the other end with a big smile on your face. I can’t wait to see the beautiful scenery from your next adventure.Lots of love and prayers 😊🏝🦋💖🦮 Safe Travels
Great Effort Guys :-) lots of grit and determination, brilliant and looked a great walk
Hey Tom & Iz
Nice to see you braving it out there in those storms and brought even closer because I live in these parts..
Great channel, love your content..Looking forward to more adventures 🤙🏻
Nice to see you back again 🎉
That was amazing guys. Well done 😊
May 13 2023: My third go around with this video. Isabele your third slip had me laughing again. I was so glad you were okay but thanks for the up in my spirit.
You two are brilliant. I'm so glad I found your channel. Such a journey but having seen you in Napal I know you have no problem with UK. So proud of you both especially with that rain and wind. Take care.
With this video it shows that you are back and on it. Brilliant. Great filming, story telling, editing and a great choice of music. This video reminded me why I loved, and hated camping under canvas! Thank you and stay safe you two.
Smashed it guys! Well played, we didn't even bother going out in the van last few weeks as it was so cold and windy so we have been shamed here with your efforts 😂.
Great video mother nature is the greatest artist and you guys are enjoying the exhibition the art by mother nature ❤
Well done, you two, winter camping us not easy at all. That was a great adventure, one ye will laugh at over, and over again in many years to come. The man of War beach looks beautiful.
What a beautiful place! I am exhausted just watching you guys, tbh, would not have gotten out of the van 😅Thanks for another adventure! ❤xo
Guys this was incredible! Thanks 😊
well done guys, really enjoyed your vlog keep them coming
Bravo both - that looked really tough but you both kept smiling. Kudos to you both
Lovely look of joy on your faces at the end 😁
You both are big influencers for trekkers! Thanks for showing coastal England, it was incredible but dangerous too! Bravo survivers👍
Nice work, good to blast things out even when you don’t want to or the weather is off putting. Good end too with a nice wee plant based bad boy. All the best
Great inspirational video guys…well done 👏👏
Another wonderful video. You are lovely company wherever you go.
Ye are certainly proof that when the going gets tough the tough get going and keep going! 💪 Well done 👏 👏👏
Good work you two. That bit of coast is hard going particularly in bad weather. We did this stretch of the coastal path a couple of years ago when we were completing the south west coast path and it was the muddiest bit as you clearly showed in your video!
Amazing guys that was tough. Enjoy the rest. 👍🇮🇪
Loving your resolution to get out and enjoy winter. I struggle with this time of year too and am determined to do the same xx
Ahh well done you too! You were in my neck of the woods and I could have bought you that pint I offered you some months back. In fact you were very close to the best pub in the world (Square & Compass) who allow camping in the garden. Next time maybe. Safe travels.
Well done both of you!
That was brilliant. More, more, more....
Gee you two have got some stamina, great effort oh tbis walk, well done! A boat adventure sounds interesting.....
Well done!! A friend of ours and his wife backpacked the south west coastal path, they worked out that the total ascent on the route equalled climbing Everest!! Keep going!! Ernie and Janet! (Retired backpackers!)
Great first walking/camping video of 2023 in harsh weather 😁
Really enjoyed your challenge sat here with the central heating on lol :o) ..seriously though, I really admire your stamina Tom & Izzy, a big well done on completing this hike in those conditions !
Crikey! The weather!
But then, it is January 🤷🏻♂️
You both sound extra Cornwallish! Is that because you're in Dorset?
Wow, how strong was that whisky you drank in the tent, Tom?! 🤪🤤
Brilliant video. You never make it easy for yourselves! 👏👏👍
Great video. Thank you.
That’s getting out of your comfort zone and toughing it out for real!👍. La Vanba will be getting some love for sure❤
Enjoyed watching that.
We’ve dabbled in tent wild camping but only in the mountains so I think we need to consider the coast moving too 🤩
Very gutsy! Well done!🇨🇦
Well done. Very brave. If you are coming up to Norfolk you are very welcome to stay here, garden or house. Susan & William.
still rocking the Irish hat, fairplay...
Brilliant accomplishment guys brutal coast walk done very well,
You both are very determined people and that's to be commended reminds me of taking scouts to camp. Will never forget the smell of a damp tent and soggy feet. 🤭😊 Don't be so hard on yourselves we love what you do 🇮🇪😂
Great adventure guy’s Both of you are certainly tough question about that 👏👏💪
Hey - Well done you two.... That was like a commando training hike !! Thumbs up from me
My god your both so fit.❤️🤩🙀on second thoughts your both away with the fairies 🧚🏻♀️
Greetings from Sidmouth Devon I hope your next leg goes well. Even with a rough start it gets better. Enjoy Sidmouth is well worth a visit!
Congratulations guys..
Guys, I know this might sound weird but I'm so proud of you both. You traversed Scotland and Ireland in a campervan. Then took on the milder climes of Continental Europe and then like mad people decided to pop over to little old Nepal for a few months. But, that wasn't the end of the madness now you are back in blighty in the middle of winter camping in a tent. You are doing what so many of us would like to have the balls to do but don't. Its lovely to see how close you both are and the way you both seem to know each other so well. I'm sure you have "small" diss-agreements but you are taking these shared experiences and challenges in your stride as a couple. I love the way you support each other *blush*.
And obviously the highlights of all your videos for me is Tom's Ireland cap !
(stay safe and stay warm, check out the Metkiio heater, might be an idea for your tent)
I started going up the hills here in Scotland just over a year ago.
Loved it and round about my third time up there last February I put on my kilt and headed up.
Had a great time climbing hills and walking through heather and was quite a few miles away from the nearest civilization when the Sun started to go down .
Straight away this eerie otherwordly freezing mist rose from the ground...went straight up my kilt...and clutched my heart.
I was like "ooooh wow!"
"I'm in trouble" "I'm in trouble" and headed for home forcemarched the whole way there.
It felt like if I stopped moving I wasn't getting off those hills.
I seriously empathize with you whatever happened.
Just watching now.
Great show is funny wild crazy in joying live the do it love it don't changes anything keep up good work
8:09 Winspit Quarry fun fact : Was used for a recent scene in the STAR wars Andor series , great video guys
Hey guys that was one heck of a hike, and big back packs, 👍👍well done both. Will you get a bus back to La Bamba? Cheers Mike🥃
Good stuff guys! Looking forwards to more lost in tent....I would suggest maybe upgrading to a waterproof tent though 😅. Also, a decent air mattress will be smaller and as light as those awful thin foam rolls, and they make a HUGE difference to how much heat you lose to the ground and how comfortable your night is. Keep smashing it!
Yeah they are actually yoga mats, haha. We are desperately under equipped but wanted to go camping. We might give it a couple of months and invest in some new toys but both really want to do some more camping 🏕️
Blimey...well done. That looked hellish! 😆
I think hellish is an appropriate word here, hahaha. It was much worse than we expected, we survived though so onto the next adventure!
@@LostInTransit I've had walks and camps like that. Makes you appreciative!🤣
Fair play guys! Big struggle but worth it in the end! I'd say you need better camping mats for that kind of weather!
I hope you still have your ears Tom😊 looks amazing but maybe in the summer for us.. I do very much enjoy your vids.. Thank you guys.
Well done you two, not the best of weather for you but you did it xxx
All I can say is Brrrrrrrr chilly, well done
Beautiful trip by beautiful people. Thanks for the entertainment..
Tom you are best ❤
Fair play guys, that looked like a very difficult last day and night. I have been wanting to do a trip like this for a long time, good inspo for me to get back out without navigating neena 😁
Hey Jeff,
Can’t believe this video encouraged anyone to leave their van, hahaha. Maybe wait for slightly better weather 🥶
Good to hear from you, hope all is well with you guys over on the Emerald Isle
@@LostInTransit all is good here, hope all is well in Cornwall also
I enjoyed watching this tucked up under a warm duvet. And I'm not a bit sorry.
Cool video! Beautiful adventure. Well done. New follower here. Crow✌️
Well done guys. I live just down the road from Durdle For at Osmington Mills. If I'd known you were there, I'd have bought you something hot. It's tough terrain that path.
Loved Melanie Bell's music in this!!
Well done guys 👍🏻.
Very brave.
I love wild camping.
But not in winter
Fantastic coastline. Great weather for ducks.🤣👍😊🇮🇪🇬🇧
Amazing video you guys! I can't believe you hiked through a firing range. I love the determination of getting up the hill on the second day. I too remember those stairs in Chhomrong, from our ABC Trek. 😅😅 Way to challenge yourselves. Are you missing Nepal as much as we are? lol Namaste :)
Hats off to you braving the weather and all that mud. How did you get back to the van?
WILD CAMPING IN WINTER WAS A MISTAKE: No it wasn't, you guys will giggle remembering this in thirty years time. Well done, good stuff.
