    I don't know: calling a perfume "007" is a bit too obvious for me. It's like calling a scent Harley-Davidson, Bentley or Ferrari. And spending 200 GBP on that? Still, it's good to see Floris still performing so well and still in family ownership.

    At £200, this is probably not for me, so I’ll be sticking with the 89 - a wonderful, masculine scent that always gets a compliment.
    And, A lovely article, Ash. There are so many 😮fragrance guys😮 on CZcams but they all seem to recommend either the latest man- pong or Creed Green Irish Tweed!

    100% Agree, I have no89 (also the Turnbull & Asser fragrance) and I was happy to pay (I think the £55), I enjoy the association with Bond via the author but £200... It's just too much. But don't worry Floris, I will continue to buy no89 as soon as it starts to run out.

    I can only be sure, of only one scent Bond ever wore, and that's the sweet smell of victory. But thank you for your insights, and I still look forward to trying Floris 89, when I can find a convenient source of supply.

    Hi Ash,
    I went to Floris this afternoon and found the 100ml of 007 is currently on sale for £100 which I think is a much better price.
    I asked the store staff whether this meant it was to be discontinued and they told me it's disappearing from March 24.
    I picked up a bottle because have always been a fan of It but not been able to justify the £200 price! Also got my partner a bottle of Mulberry fig, I think this is one of the nicest more feminine floris fragrances

  • @themoderndandy713
    @themoderndandy713 Před rokem +4

    I've been on a fragrance livestream multiple times, and I'm somewhat interested in the subject. With that said, I have issues with a lot of the fragrance market. I think some of it is outright scam-ish.
    An expensive suit has stuff you're paying for. Even if you're not paying for a bespoke or made-to-measure program, you're still buying (hopefully) a luxurious fabric, handwork, and good construction. An expensive tie ideally has an excellent fabric and good craftsmanship. Expensive shoes have some sort of good stitching, a good welt, and good leather.
    So what do expensive fragrances get you? I'll put aside oud for a second, because that's legitimately hard to get. Ingredient listings in luxury fragrances like Creed don't read anything spectacular. There's a reason so many fashion houses make a fragrance. It's a rather low cost to make, and a high selling point. This isn't the case with luxury clothes like suits. These fashion houses, furthermore, sell for a sixth of luxury fragrances! A designer scent like Givenchy (my personal favorite) sells for a sixth of Green Irish Tweed. The only thing you're arguably paying for is the nose. With that said, even cheap fragrances have noses behind them.
    Tell Joe Average to touch a cashmere blend suit, and he'll know it's expensive. Tell him to touch a polyester suit, and he'll know it's cheap. On the other hand, tell Mr. Average to smell a luxury fragrance, then tell him to smell a modestly-priced scent, and he won't know the difference. Don't get me wrong here, I don't think a luxury fragrance is a bad thing to buy if you can afford it. After all, I prefer and encourage the idea of the rich spending their money rather than hoarding it. With that said, I think anyone who has any care about their money should place that money on something else - anything else. You can get basically the same quality for a fraction of the price of niche houses.
    I'd also like to point out how excessive luxury fragrances are. For two hundred pounds, you can get a good pair of shoes, or two to four good-quality used suits, or season tickets to the opera, all of which are better than a few months of smelling nice when you could smell just as nice for much less.
    Luxury fragrances are perhaps the embodiment of pure luxury, because when you get down to it, you're paying far more for nothing. A flex? Perhaps. Not quite sensible, in my opinion.

    Hi Ash interesting video. I had been keen to try Floris for a while and recently purchased a 89 shaving soap to try and I was surprised to find when I compared the fragrance side by side with Tarbac if I had been blindfolded I would have struggled to tell which was which in my opinion. I know 89 preceded Tabac by 8 years and this is merely an observation on my part.
    Keep up the good work and keep well and keep safe.

    This review is a perfect example of why this channel is one of my favorites. Ash is a man of integrity. Floris invited him to nice event at a 5 star hotel, offered him champagne and free product samples and yet he gives a straightforward and honest review. Some might have been tempted to hedge the review a bit in hopes that Floris might extend another invitation or other inducement in the future (nothing wrong with them doing that BTW, it's business.) But Ash gave us a fair and honest review of the product. Well done!

I've just been booking accommodation and airfares to travel to the UK, so that my wife and I can soak up some of the atmosphere around the Coronation on May 6. Can't miss the opportunity to be part of history. We'll probably stay on to attend Chelsea Flower show later on the month, an event which we've enjoyed on a couple of previous occasions. We're very excited about the opportunity to travel again, and particularly to the UK, which we both love and enjoy spending time in.

    I'm a real fan of Floris, but $310 USD is ridiculous. I have several of their fragrances, including: No. 89, Special No. 127, 71/72, Jermyn Street, Santal, Elite, Neroli Voyage, JF, Honey Oud, and most recently, Platinum 22. I agree that No. 89 is awesome, and it will always be the scent of James Bond. I'm looking forward to tapping into Platinum 22, which I bought blind, and found 100mL for only $125 USD - a steal, and a beautiful presentation! 😉

    I'm new to your channel, so coming in late with my comments. 007 is not a hit for me, it is acceptable but nothing I want to wear myself. For those money I rather buy (and I did) Floris Leather Oud and Honey Oud. They are defilitely more of a scent for special occasions, but especially the Honey Oud is a EdP that people notice, mostly in a good way and both projection and longevity are amazing.

    I tested them both at Floris' and the 007 seemed like a toned down version of the 89. I would probably choose the 89 if I was in the market for a perfume. The Eau de Parfum will always be more expensive than the Eau de Toilette. The Parfum, which is the essence and comes in a tiny bottle is even more expensive. I really like those family owned businesses, so many have been bought up by big conglomerates now.

    Can't believe I've missed this until now... as a fan of Floris. On the point of No89 being nudged by Floris as Mr Bond's scent of choice. My opinion is that it's pretty fair! Flemming used his own posh background and pickiness to paint the picture of Bond. Flemming was a customer of theirs and they have the receipts ... as were many of our well heeled establishment, which Flemming was most certainly part of... his mother rang Churchill to get her daydreamer of a son a job at the Admiralty!!, not something us peasants could do. I'm with Floris on this :) .... Bond was partly a projection of what Flemming wishes he was. PS thanks for being honest. M

    Okay, paused at 0:01. Why would you want to release a 007 scent, when you already have Ian Fleming's favorite perfume in your portfolio? This and Trumper's Eucris are the archetypal, historic Bond scents.
    But I'm sure you'll tell me all about it, Ash!
    EDIT after finishing the video: just what I expected. Floris shines when it comes to their back catalogues, but most of their more recent offerings really don't have much uniqueness or personality. "Neroli Voyage", "Honey Oud"... All minor disappointments. Not terrible, but not quite up to the standard of a "No.89" or "Elite".

    James bond 007 is universal hero

    • @themoderndandy713
      @themoderndandy713 Před rokem +2

      Bond is more of an anti-hero. He's interesting as a character, certainly. People criticize Bond for the way he treats women, especially in the books, but I find it to be befitting of his character. At the core of Bond is a psychopath who kills in the name of Her Majesty (perhaps now His Majesty if the films continue) as a way not to kill illegally. The one-liners, while amusing for an audience, represent what in reality is a psychopathic personality - one who finds amusement in murder. Women are drawn to him, as it goes in the real world with high-functioning psychopaths. And just like how it goes in real life, he ends up being worse than he seems on the cover. I've never been all that in to Bond movies, but I find his character both fascinating and misunderstood: a homicidal, clinical psychopath who directs his urges to good for his own sake. Charming, successful, and dominant.
      Okay, with that dark diatribe over, here's a fun fact for y'all: in the books, Bond was far from the style maven we know him as today. He wore sandals with suits, for example. Sean Connery was the one who connected Bond with style. Flemming's Bond was a lot less so.

  • @danielschaeffer1294
    @danielschaeffer1294 Před rokem

    I was raised on the paperbacks and the early Connery flicks, and much as I love the whole Bond mythos, I have to say that a real spy has to be inconspicuous, so the idea of such a person wearing expensive fragrances, let alone a watch that costs as much as a good used car is … well … romantic.
    That said, Connery would wear Quorum - wood, leather and tobacco. Roger Moore was a ladies’ man who occasionally killed people - Le Troisieme Homme, vanilla, florals and citrus. Dalton was closest to the Fleming character, so he might wear 89, but just as likely Dunhill For Men in cool weather with a suit, and maybe Paco Rabanne in the Caribbean. Dalton was an emotionally damaged thug, and about the only thing I can imagine him wearing is Yatagan. Why would any of these guys pay this kind of money for a scent that lasts a couple of hours?
    It sounds as if, with this offering at least, Floris is paying homage, not to Bond, but to Frank Zappa - “We’re only in it for the money.”
    Speaking of Fleming, I wonder if you’re a fan of Len Deighton. I had a friend who’d spent time in U. S. Naval Intelligence before becoming a college English teacher, and he claimed that Deighton’s books were the only thrillers he’d read that actually captured what a trivial, ineffectual, sleazy profession espionage really is. (Michael Caine played Deighton’s befuddled hero to perfection.)

    I think Floris have made a shameless cash grab on this occasion. The thing about Bond associations, is that they have to be subtle. I have an omega seamaster, but I would never wear a 007 edition model with actual 007 on the watch. The connection to no89 was a nice nod to Bond, this is just too obvious

  • @johnhickman2033
    @johnhickman2033 Před 9 měsíci

    It's a high quality perfume for men. The 007 connection is overstretched, tedious and quite blatantly marketing the Bond brand. This marketing strategy has put me off buying the EDP and I think I would make more relative and un-hyped choices when considering a Floris product.
