Hyundai Elantra Engine Sound Comparison 100 miles to 55,000 miles

  • Here's a comparison of the engine and engine bay in my 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The first segment was shot at 155 miles. The second segment was shot at just under 56,000 miles. The engine sounds the same, but in the second segment, the A/C was running and the engine was cold (hence the valve noise).

It's never experienced an actual "failure," they just weren't "performing to spec." The second replacement transmission (about 15k ago) has been absolutely flawless. Solid lifters on a DOHC engine like this one use the "shim-and-bucket" type of adjustment; they only really need to be adjusted if there is excessive valve noise after 15 minutes (my light tapping noise is usually gone after five).

You keep the engine compartment very clean

The injectors are very noisy (always have been), but if you listen carefully, you can hear very slight valvetrain noise come and go periodically. This disappears once the engine is warmed up, and is totally normal. Yep, this is a Beta II.

So how many transmissions has it burned through lately? :-P
The engine sounds fine. I'm surprised it has solid lifters. Does that mean it needs periodic valve adjustments?

Your engine looks very clean and tidy . I would buy a car from you .

  • @bbishoppcm

Absolutely. I mentioned the valve noise because some bozo is going to pick up on it and say something. Valve noise is perfectly normal with solid lifters. This car is built like a freaking rock; if you only knew the torture this thing goes through!

The engine looks quite clean (at least compared to my car...), do you regularly wash or clean the engine? My mechanic says i better should leave it as it is......

Valve noise happens with hydraulic lifters too. A friend had an Elantra, the radiator will eventually give out around 75-80k, the crimps on the end caps fail. Unless things have changed since the 03 model year, the rear brake calipers are prone to seizing up in areas with high salt content. Did they finally switch to coil packs on that engine? I was surprised to see the 03 engine didn't have them. Don't know how the auto held up on those, he had a stick (and 3 clutches over 90k miles).

That's pretty much my point... this car is driven HARD, with as many as TEN shutdown and startup cycles in a single day. I drive this car through snow, ice, salt, rain, and on long unpaved roads filled with ruts. I let the engine idle for extended periods, and I'm not gentle with this car AT ALL. How does this car still run and look like new? I maintain the hell out of it; oil every 3k, OEM filters ONLY, regular engine bay washdowns, and all other maintenance is done without question.

Hey. I am considering getting this car. I am however concerned about you saying it eats transmission? Can you please expand on this? Also what is the average mileage you get when on normal usage (mountain, snow, dirt road and all)

    • @bbishoppcm
      @bbishoppcm  Před 6 lety

Avoid the 2010 model year if buying one with an automatic transmission.

  • @RetroGamerVX

Not fair, the radiator was running on the second!!. but actually, sounds better at 55k, it's run in, not so tight :o)

You must be really good at detailing engines ., I've never seen one this clean 55,000( miles?) ...I don't hear anything unusual in your motor.

I take very good care of my vehicles. I regularly wash the engine bays down, which is why that engine looked and sounded exactly as it did the day I bought it when I dumped it at 93,000 miles. I only got rid of the car because it kept eating transmissions, and the warranty was nearly up on it. I now own a 2014 Elantra GT, which I love. Bought it with 0 miles, and it now has nearly 68,000 miles on it. The engine bay looks exactly as clean as my 2010's did. The thing is, you can't make a used car look this good, because not many people detail their engine bays. Once the road salt starts tarnishing the bare aluminum surfaces and starts corroding the steel brackets and hardware... that's it, it'll never look as good as one that's been washed since day 1.

The only thing I criticize them about is the rather boring styling they had up until ~2011. They weren't very eye catching.
Reliability wise, they seem pretty solid from what I've seen.

I have a 2010 elantra blue, no a.c. :(, but otherwise astoundingly solid car, I have 47k miles and might be dropping 2 grand on a turbo kit when I hit 60k miles and also replace all belts water pump, plugs and stuff come with the kit haha

A car can last a long time if you take care of it. We all know that we should do the regular maintanance on our vehicles but do people consider the way they drive on the road and the wear and tear it causes on the longetivity of the vehicle?

ali amiri Seriously, the weight distribution on this car is perfect; with snow tires, this car is remarkably capable in deep snow. I've even used it to haul lumber. I've owned trucks in the past, and honestly don't feel like paying extra for fuel just to drive one.
