    ► Our Website: mechaniclifestyle.com
In this video, we will demonstrate a common problem with Hyundai Elantra. Our 2013 Hyundai Elantra developed an engine ticking noise just before it turned 70,000 miles. I did some online research and this seems to be a common engine ticking noise with hyundai elantras 2011-2016. Most likely it is a piston slap. We will be taking the engine apart soon. Check out if the noise was better after oil change. More Hyundai Elantra Repair Videos: goo.gl/6HZZwS

My 2016-2017 accent both do this cold as soon as they motors get to just over 1000 rpm it goes away ! Bought both on the same day both new in February 2017 ! As the closer you get to your 5000km oil change it gets louder ! My next oil change I will be switching to 5w30 I have been thinking 5w20 is to light! Only reason I haven’t switched yet is because I got 2 years of free oil changes ! Also both cars have 150000 km 8 year power train warranty! Always keep oil clean it’s the best thing you can do ! My father bought a 1992 ford ranger with 250000 Kms for 1500 bucks my father changed the oil every 4000kms and in the summer he ran diesel oil in it and the winter he would switch back to 10w30 and that truck ran with no problems for over the 15 years for him only thing he did was a few water pumps exhaust and brake pads ! The frame and body rusted out and the motor was still running at 890000 kms when we took it to the scrap yard ! Best 1500 bucks he ever spent lol !

Maybe even a gentle engine flush. Something that is OK to leave in. Something slow acting like Hotshots Secret Stiction Eliminator maybe. It can be used in gasoline or Diesel engines. It is somewhat expensive at around $25 for a quart. It also has their friction reducer in it. They guarantee it in that they will refund you if you are not happy with it for some reason. Just make sure to still have a receipt for it and maybe even be ready to send the remaining product back. In my opinion you might not find yourself sending it back. It works really and there are many people who would say similar things. I do not sell their products or have any connection with them. I just tried their stuff and it worked for me. My vehicle is a Nissan and does not have any ticking problems and I should point out your luck may vary. You don't need to have a high mileage engine to use anything like this BTW. In fact on a high mileage engine you may see leaks. That is because the stuff it cleans out may have been the only thing plugging leaks in the gaskets. It is the reason why some people might tell you not to use a synthetic oil. There was also a time when synthetic oils were thought to cause leaks. The products I mentioned not only contain a friction reducer made by that company but they use synthetic base stocks and additives in their oils and other products. I would love to have a vehicle that never had anything like that in it and let a friend take it for a ride and then quietly put that in it without telling him. This is a good way to test whether it seems to do anything and without him having any knowledge that you used something in it that would eliminate the placebo effect. The idea is that if they know there is something there they will have an expectation of improvement or maybe even think that there was one. The idea is they don't know anything except what they may notice when they operate the vehicle. When you see him next ask if he noticed any difference between that trip and the ones before it, then you reveal what you did to your vehicle. This is a good way to prove that not all additives are snake oil to the cynics and skeptics. They may be cynical from all the money they wasted trying other products that did not perform as well as they would expect.

I have been keeping an eye out on it for about a week now. I found out going from 10w-30 to a lower oil to 5-30 solved the problem for me. Reason I say is yesterday the weather was 15 and before the 15 degrees it was 40 degrees and no sounds when it was warmer... The oil weight for sure has to do with certain climates. Nice Video:)

If you had one of those funnels with the mesh in the end of it that would catch anything you may want to see. Also if the oil is really bad it may clog that mesh some so make sure to have a place where you can leave it drain into the bottle. That would be a place out of the way where you won't forget and accidentally knock it over. It may pass through the funnel quick enough that it would not be that problem. The funnel I am thinking of is probably something that would be sold for filling hydraulic fluid. Someone with expensive equipment who doesn't want dirt getting into his machines would be likely to use a funnel like this. You could also use a funnel like that to put oil in your car or truck engine if it fits in the fill hole. These are a big funnel too and look like they could hold nearly a quart of oil but that oil won't be in there long enough for it to fill unless you like pouring it fast. I would recommend some sort of slow acting gentle engine flush you can leave in until the next change and maybe change the filter part way through. There is a comment by me in here somewhere about a product I like. I have no idea if you will like it or not. Why is that you may wonder? It is simply that everyone is different. Also there is a chance that it might not help this ticking sound. I doubt that it would make it worse but you never know. I would never guarantee it not to cause a new problem. It is something that you would use more for preventative maintenance. I also can't guarantee it because if it is a worn out or broken part causing it that will not magically repair it.

Wanted to add that piston slap at least where I live describes when the pistons rock back and forth in the bore when the engine is cold. Not when you have a piston pin worn and it's making a noise.
A lot of inline 6-cylinder 4-L Jeep engines suffer from piston slap when they're cold.
other people have mentioned this but there may be a warranty claim available through Hyundai on this problem. Other people have mentioned they are replacing engines regardless of the year or mileage or whether you're the first owner or not.

I might triy some Lucas top end lube, or a thicker oil 10w30 for the summer. Most engines should not tick that much . They have hydraulic lifters, that self adjust, not like the old days when they had solid lifters. Try some upper valve lube , that might help.

I have seen engines tick for thousands and thousands of miles and never have a issue. I have also seen people try to fix the issue only to make things worse.
If its not affecting you in any way but a lil noise best leave alone. Its like the customer who complains about squeaky brakes. Brakes have to stop a giant hunk of metal they will make noise sometimes.
I bought a motorcycle once that was actually knocking. Not ticking but knocking for $400. Very nice super bike. Honda CBR 1000cc. The guy said he gave it a tune up and drove it home. Then the engine started knocking. He stated he was driving fast so assumed he blew it up. 99% of people would think the same.
Not me I bought the bike got it home and started my diagnosis. The issue was two of his spark plugs had came loose and the engine was missing so bad it was knocking. Unburnt gas was hitting the exhaust making it worse. I tightened the plugs and had a $5000 bike. I drove it for 6 months and went ahead and make $4600 off of it. I have 3 ATVs right now worth $3000 or $4000 together. I bought them for less than $500. The issues were all electrical that someone else couldn't fix or didn't want to spend the money to fix. Electrical issues are tricky and it took me about 3 hours on each to rewire things and track down issues but it can be done. Dont be scared to buy that nice broke down ride. Sometimes its a simple repair.

Thanks for the info. I have a 2014 Elantra. I had the same problem with knocking/ ticking. The car has 112,000 miles on it. I changed the oil and the problem went away. I had almost 4,000 miles between oil changes. Could it be the oil needs to be changed more frequently? You also said the ticking was coming from the top of the engine. Could it be the valves needing adjustment? Are the valves adjustable on this engine?
This problem came about because the car wouldn't start. I got 112,000 trouble free miles from the engine. I changed the plugs and the filters and still the same problem. At first I thought it was a gas pump and filter. I watched your video how to change it. ( Good video)I figured out the engine wasn't getting gas. But the pump wasn't the problem. So I took it to the dealer and they flushed the fuel injectors, and no more hard starting. That's when the dealer mentioned the ticking noise. Changing oil solved the problem.
Thanks for all the info, you're a very intelligent mechanic. Hats off to you, and much success.
