♦️Jimin wrote the lyrics not only by himself, but was the only one to send his very first draft to the producers, and it was approved, so no need for a rewrite! The lie is the lie he keeps telling himself. Always in the past aiming for perfection and by doing so always questioning and second guessing himself! Although deep inside he knows better! The other lie is telling himself as well as everyone else that everything is alright when it's not!! Jimin has grown and changed, along with the other members since then. All learning to love themselves for who & what they are flaws and all! Jimin is now able to, as his song Promise says, shine the light on himself, as well, speaking up more when things bother him and allowing himself to laugh off whenever he makes any kind of mistake, knowing now he can always perfect or improve on whatever is lacking next time!!

Yes you got it right. So many people tell themselves they aren't good enough, not smart enough, not pretty enough or whatever the lie might be but they really are. We must accept ourselves as we are and quit trying to be someone else. Even Jesus tells us to come as we are. He knows we aren't perfect but He loves us anyway and is ready and waiting for us to come to Him.

Beside his angelic voice and dancing skills, he has sweet caring loving personality, he is perfectionist and very hard on him self and one of the hardest workers in the group 👍

I don't know if this has already been said here, but just to add, basically this song has a lot of musical storytelling. The whole song is in a minor key- sad, and then the only line that's in a major key- happy, is the "caught in a lie," basically saying that he's trapped in his fake happiness, but the truth is that he's miserable. There's a lot of other production and musical subtleties too in the song that's kind of showing how he's trapped in his fake happy facade.
And yeah, like everybody else said, he's a perfectionist and miserable with himself a lot, like how he almost starved himself for days because he thought he needed to look better for Blood, Sweat, and Tears, so this is a song to show his true self instead of faking happiness all the time, kind of showing a fight within himself.
So... Stage-mixes are great because you get to see the consistency between performances and a bunch of the outfits... I DO, HOWEVER, recommend watching a single live performance. I really think you get a better sense of the emotion from a single performance than one with all the edits.

But for Lie, the vocalization before the chorus, the ochestra-seque instrumentals coupled with Jimin’s dancing is just so enchanting, almost like a spell just like Jimin struggling with his persona in the lyrics… it’s just so beautiful and Jimin being an amazing performer just captive you that your eyes are fixed on him and you want to see more.
I also listened to Classic musicians react to lie and they were like the song went from a minor in the verse to a major in the chorus so the lie is in the song itself.
Lie is from 2016 album WINGS and I recommend you check the album. Truly a masterpiece 😚💜

Here's info that some still aren't aware of:
❤️JIMIN, at age 11-12 started studying, performing, & competing (winning every competition), in hip hop, popping (excelled), & street dancing, while attending the renowned Just Dance Academy in Busan where he's from! He was so good that an instructor even had the high tuition fee waived at one point! This was while also attending middle school, where he loved sports, being quite athletic, joined the football team, excellent at track, great at basketball, & billiards! Jimin also, all throughout his schooling, was known as a top scholar, achieving perfect scores, especially in math & science which just always came easy to him! Jimin was even class president for 9 yrs in a row! Jimin, all throughout his schooling, was also quite good in art class, as well as calligraphy.
Jimin, then also took up contemporary dance. The media, after seeing a performance of Jimin's performing at a huge Busan Festival Event, called Jimin "The rising star of Busan"!! JIMIN also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending Busan High School of the Arts. Jimin still went to Just Dance Academy to take hip hop classes whenever he could because his first love has always been hip hop, even though he was now majoring in contemporary! JIMIN even had an offer to dance overseas, but declined because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade, to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said "The world of dance was going to lose a great artist"!!
So Jimin then went and auditioned for BigHit Entertainment, (company BTS is signed with), being the very last member to join, being a trainee for only a few months (which is unheard of for most Kpop idols), as opposed to the 2-3 yrs of being a trainee the other members had! But Jimin was so good that he was assigned the official title of one of the two Main Dancers, as well as Lead Vocalist. Jimin was even assigned most of the high notes since the very beginning, because even without all that training in the beginning, he was that good, a natural born singer who, just like his dancing makes you feel every emotion and feeling he's trying to convey!
JIMIN, also, for 8 yrs, since a quite young boy, trained in various forms (4), of martial arts: Taekwondo (Blackbelt), Hapkido, Kumdo (Korean form of Kendo), & Chinese martial arts. He even won a scholarship, the only student to do so, to study more extensively in China for awhile! All the martial arts training has given JIMIN his phenomenal inner core strength, as well as his amazing flexibility, which has enabled Jimin to achieve all those breathtakingly spectacular gravity defying dance moves! JIMIN has found a way to incorporate all his various dance disciplines, as well as his extensive training in martial arts into his unique, ever so special, outstandingly amazing dancing abilities!!
JIMIN, has been called 'Stage Commander', known for his amazing, so mesmerizing stage presence. Each dance move is executed flawlessly, his extensions all the way to the fingertips, his lines so clean, his fluidity, his poise & elegance, his ever so graceful moves, but yet, sharp, quick & deliberate when required! He focuses on every detail! Known for his work ethics and being a perfectionist to a fault, spending hours in the practice room, will study every move, even focusing on hands to fingertips. Even his facial expressions, or the look in his eyes! Every single detail he focuses on. Jimin tends to take in the music and interprets all the emotion & feelings, whatever it's trying to convey through his body movements as well as his vocals.
JIMIN has won the prestigious titles for 2 yrs in a row for both KING OF KPOP, as well as also winning BEST TOP #1 DANCER IN KPOP, now 3 yrs in a row, as well!! Jimin is also referred to as "Rookie's Bible" because all rookie idols, try to emulate & study every move he makes, trying to learn from him! So many army are still sadly not aware of the so many achievements, awards, talents, skills, his athleticism, many of which were before he ever signed with BigHit or joined BTS! Many even army who have Jimin as their bias are also not fully aware of his background. I mean after seeing all this does he really look like he was insecure or ever shy, like many army try to insist, especially when it came to being on stage, performing, , even st age 11!! This song was inspired by the book "Demian" by Herman Hesse. The protagonist suffers the consequence when he's caught in a lie when he boasts to others. Jimin is singing as his character in the fictional storyline that runs through many of BTS' music videos as Bangtan Universe. Keep digging... BTS' lyrics and stories run deep! 💜

I honestly don't think there's any correct interpretation for this song. However, I do think that what you said makes the most sense (and that's what me and most people perceive it as). I also would like to note that he actually wrote this during that period of transition where he stopped trying to be someone that he wasn't. It was sort of his "this is the real me" song.

It amazes me how you always manage to analyze the videos and you are on point! What I love about the song lie is that RM wrote this with Jimin. When RM writes, he always rights the song taking into account the person who will be singing that song. To me, being a Jimin and Jungkook fan, this song holds two meanings to me. I am sure if you spend anytime searching CZcams regarding those two (especially today) you will understand what that second meaning is. It makes this song even more beautiful and bittersweet at the same time. When you listen this song with Serendpity, DNA, Euphoria, and Still with you, it paints a rather interesting picture.

There are few things you might also like to know. First, there is a key change from a minor to major key - that is a vocal lie about the song that you think it is minor key but not really, it is major key (changes when you hear the word LIE). Second, the style of dance changes, when he is in the lie, the dance is sharp movements, like cuts. When he is in truth (major key) the dance is smooth movement. These are also a way he communicated the lie that he is living in. Finally, you think the dance is over because he is walking away, but no that is lie because there are few final steps.
Interesting observation! I hear the modal change just the other way: The happy sound (with the smooth movements) is the lie, and the minor mode (with sharp, hurtful movements) is the truth ...

Great analysis as usual. Jimin has even spoken about it in VLives and interviews and even an interview published last week. I think he's resolved a lot of this but he is such a perfectionist that he still struggles from time to time. The best we can do as ARMY is support all of them in whatever ways they need. So having said that Lie is also part of the fictional BU story so there are those layers that you, and we, love. 💜

Btw they had magazine interviews just last week and Jimin said that what he wears influences how the song sounds to him and how he dances. Saying wearing casual clothes makes it feel more exciting as opposed to a suit that makes it feel more sexy. He also feels different dancing alone vs. with the group. That’s neat.
It’s obvious that clothing impacts your mood but to hear him as a performer say it really impressed me. Makes me wish I could dance!

I think you took it wrong. Jimin never struggle how he truly is. He has only been strungling with his voice because his voive is so unique.

She is good friends with BTS. I like your interpretation of the song. I love this song of his, and stage mixes are fun to watch. Jimin is definitely gifted, and he has gone through a lot of growth since the beginning of his journey with BTS. He is a beautiful human inside and out. They are open about their struggles, and it's a beautiful thing to watch their growth and see how genuine and humble they are. 💜
