In their docu-series Break the Silence, SUGA revealed that this song was written to the members when they were considering disbanding back in 2018 due to exhaustion and other struggles. He said all the boys cried together when they heard the song. Knowing this and with the lyrics, you can see how this possibility pained them, and also how strong the bond they share together is (also, thanks for the appreciation and genuine interest in BTS music, it's nice to see!)

A lot of new Armys generally think at first that in their earlier rap songs, jhopes doesnt have as many parts that bang (personally, i beg to differ), and maybe that was because he wasnt as familiar with rap as rm and suga were when they first began. BUT one thing that is absolutely unmistakeable all across the board is jhope's stage presence. Jhope has such a powerful stage presence, I can't even put it into words. Whether he is dancing, rapping, or even singing, he never fails to have my full attention when I watch their live performances. I would suggest that you watch more of jhope live like in the raplines live cypher medley. Its insane how he plays with his voice and moves around fluidly on the stage like its nothing. My take:
RM raps with power. With conviction. He's genius with lyrics by using wordplay. When he raps, everyone listens with attention to the words.
SUGA raps with raw passion. He emits emotions with his flows. He emphasizes his point with half-suppressed laughter, or coughing, or any other noises that makes the listener more attached.
JHOPE raps like he dances. It is more rythmic, it has dynamics, it moves you. He can really sing so there are times like he is singing and rapping at the same time.
What's crazy about BTS is there is no bad link. They are all amazing artist and there should be no need to pick a favorite. They are each other's #1 fan already.

Outro: Tear is a breakup song. Whether that breakup is with a significant other, or between family members, or with your group members, it encompasses the same emotions of pain, loss, distress, denial, anger, fear. Destroying a bond with another, with someone you care deeply about, is always going to be a complicated mess, and the song is them conveying that mess of emotion, breaking it down, and explaining it in their own special way. The song itself isn't necessarily ABOUT the boys considering disbanding, but rather, explains those emotions they must have been going through, knowing how it feels to break up with someone, or several someones. That is what makes this a painfully vulnerable, but relatable song. It isn't about their situation in particular, but rather, about breaking up in general. And we can all relate to that pain.

Sorry to intrude on your explanation and I feel what you are tryna say (amazing explanation!) but this song IS about them (not all of it but the meaning is). It can be used as a breakup song but this song is for them- says Yoongi in their Break The Silence ep 6. It was that very year in 2018 where they were burned out and discussing disbandment but they fought through it and decided to stay for each other and for armys as well because they suddenly got too famous and it was a huge burden on their shoulders. And they were all in their mid 20s so it was very hard to carry it. They re-signed to their label for another 7 years because of their fans and the company (very small then - facing bankruptcy) and they have done nothing but help the boys with their mental health and everything else. Their boss was like their strict father and the company have always looked out for them.

I watched Break the Silence, and I am familiar with what Yoongi said, as well as the circumstances surrounding the period when he was writing this song. I am also aware that the popular dogma within the fandom is that the song was ABOUT the possibility of disbandment. But what he said was that he wrote the lyrics FOR the members, not exactly ABOUT their particular situation. The emotions, the feelings, would still be there. That was why I said it wasn't necessarily ABOUT it, but I didn't completely negate that possibility as no one other than the members themselves know all the specifics about it. They were in a bad place mentally, around the time Yoongi (suga) wrote the melody to this. That's why they were considering disbanding after their contract was over. They said that they were all burnt out and even asked the company to take a 2 month break from everything so they could get themselves together emotionally and physically (although it only lasted one month bc they wanted to get back to it) They ended up signing another 7 year contract to stay together and are currently going to hit their 8th year on the 12th (13th in korea)♡♡. All these trials and hardships really could've stopped them, but they didn't. Because at the end of the day, they recognize that they love music, their art and their fans. This topic relates a lot to their song "Louder Than Bombs" which talks about them accepting the darkness and negativity that comes with being in such a position as theirs, and knowing that they simply have to be "louder than bombs" to sing "louder than bombs" in order to live above all of that and keep going with their passion. I really hope you check it out sometime 💜

I love the fact that you recognized the emotions that they feel with this song. Somehow, a lot of people didn't really recognize that, right up until Suga admitted last year that this song was written when they were seriously considering disbanding. They mean so much to each other and the very thought of separating hurt all of them. You should watch their acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMA awards. That's when they first admitted that they had nearly broken up and it was very emotional. Seeing how emotional they got just thinking about it when it was no longer happening gives you a better understanding of their emotions in this song, which describes how each of them felt in the moment. Twitter pretty much had a meltdown after Suga revealed what was behind the lyrics of this song. And, yes, it broke a lot of hearts, realizing just how much pain they'd been in. This is my favorite performance of J-Hope's. That's not just J-Hope on that stage, but Jung Hoseok, the man behind J-Hope and the feelings are very real.

It's also worth noting since you really appreciate lyrics with deep meanings, in Suga's verse when he mentions stepping on the broken pieces of his heart, he uses a very archaic word for "step on". Using this word would kinda be like talking like Shakespeare in English, but a lot of Koreans are still familiar with the word because it's used in a famous Korean poem called "Azaleas". In this poem, to "step on" the Azaleas is like stepping on all innocence. When you're at this point, it's as if you have no feeling, no emotion left in you. So when Suga says to "step on" his heart, he's essentially telling the other person to numb his heart and rid it of all feeling and emotion so he doesn't have to endure the pain of this parting

RM's rapping about 'tears'/crying at the idea of separating -- On stage I feel like RM raps with confidence and skill.
Suga is rapping about tear (like tare), feeling torn about or about to be torn apart -- Suga got a shitload of swag on stage, King of Swag
J-Hope is rapping about fear, that even just the thought of breaking up already puts fear into him -- J-Hope raps with a bit of both but with a lot of charisma and energy. Watching J-Hope has wrecked many biases. Mine included.

I have to tell you this was translated literally. As someone who knows a few languages, English grammar is different than so many other languages. So many languages do Verb, adverb conjugate to verb; Noun, adnoun conjugate to noun. So when you see translations turn them on their head. So for instance the first verse says here - Parting is to me, unkowingly in my eyes, all the thing we couldn't say flow out and lingering feelings crawl up my face = (true translation) Goodbye, to me, is tear; even without noticing, it comes to bloom around my eyes. Words that I couldn't let out now flow, the lingering love crawls on my face. For a time you were my dear, but now the beer tastes only bitter. My heart stained with a belated self-hatred, gets emptied by the wind rushing by, Goodbye that ended up coming to me is what I deserve at the end of my playacting full of lies, If someone turned back time for me, could I maybe be more honest, my bare face that only I know, and my ugly and humble old friends within myself, Could you have still loved me, with the smile you used to make looking at me, Forever, stop saying forever, There's gotta be an end anyway, If there's a beginning I don't wanna listen to that, Advice that's too right or too many words of comfort I don't wanna listen to that, I was just so scared, because it felt like maybe I had never loved you at all, not for even once, Although it's late, you were sincere, only you loved me, more, Your my tear ... (So if you are looking for clear real translations instead of literal translations Doolset has English lyrics to all the BTS songs that are real translations that even give context to some of the more difficult Korean Phrases) There address for BTS is doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com They will help a great deal in future if you want to continue to go down the rabbit hole that is the BTS Universe. And welcome down this rabbit hole we the ARMY welcome you.
Also if you really want to know what this song was about this speech really explains it all. czcams.com/video/vOdYb3rgu0A/video.html If it does not show it is the speech of Artist of the year for MAMA in 2018. It is in youtube and has Eng Subs. I can't quote it all so look it up if it doesn't show here.

My favorite rap line song bc of the emotional meaning… that beautiful piano to start it off… like you have no idea what’s coming and I think that confusion and trying to listen bc it takes a minute to get into it and build so you’re waiting and before you know it after that slow tension build… rm hits the ground running out of nowhere… you’re not ready for it even though you know something is coming… I feel like it may be intentional to mirror the situation that could lead to these verses… but how they do it live is anazing!

    From Doolset website:
The lyrics have both tear (tir; as in crying) and tear (ter; as in ripping apart), to be rhymed with fear. In Ep 6 of Break the Silence (is a BTS Docu-Series), SUGA shared, “The lyrics for Tear were written for the members. When I was writing the melody, at the time, we were deeply contemplating whether we should quit or not. When I played the song for the members, we all cried together.”
So basically the whole song was played on these 3 words (tear, tear, fear).
Suga is the one that you said "he demanded the stage", RM in the beginning and J-Hope at the end, so you guessed right all 3 of them 😎💜

Suga wrote this for the BTS members when they thought about disbanding a couple years back. They were breaking into the US market and were at their prime so they decided they would renewed their contract with BigHit Entertainment for another 7 years.
The first tear is ‘tears from the eyes’
    The second tear is ‘ripping’
    Then third is fear
By the way you got all the rappers name right. WAY TO GO!!

So back in 2019 BTS were thinking of disbanding due to many factors (contract renewal, new fame overseas, individual goals and additional responsibilities, etc). To me, it sounded like they went through a huge argument that consisted of tearing apart, fearing the future and lots of tears from hurting eachother as their goals were no longer aligned. Outro: Tear is the result of it... I'm sooooo damn thankful they've been able to pull through it!

You were correct on all 3 members. RM was first, followed by Suga, then J-Hope.
The title to this song is very interesting. When you said you didn't know if it was Tear (Tir) or Tear (ter) you were right both times. RM & Suga each picked a different meaning for "Tear". RM uses Tear (like crying), Suga uses Tear (like ripping), and J-Hope rymes these 2 with "Fear" because this parting his his fear.
The lyrics to this song are some of BTS's most personal. This song was written around early 2018, when the members were seriously considering disbandment. Suga mentioned that he wrote the melody, and when he played it for the other members, all of them broke down in tears

12:52 yeah Suga's stage presence is no joke but he is the most like raw emotional rapper I would say. You really should check out his full solo mixtapes as Agust D he has two 'Agust D' released in 2016 and 'D-2' in 2020. His subjects, lyrics and emotion and rawness and ofcourse skill as a rapper it just draws you in fully like you feel it in your soul.
But all three rappers have their unique style and you definently should go through their full mixtapes, RM have two and J-Hope one.
And I am OT7 and even though I sound biast to Yoongi here he just hits me in the emotions here so I had to pause and comment. I have actually listened to RM and J-Hope's solo tracks mostly lately but during the winter it was almost all Agust D.
And I love that they are so different from eachother, but great together as BTS and you can mix or listen to just one depending on your mood that day.
Like now it's been the whole rapline on a mixed playlist for me for a while but mostly J-hope the last days and just his more uplifting, swaggy, dancy style and the nice vibes of Blue Side that he recently released in a full lenght version of. A few weeks ago when it was just grey and rainy and mellow I listened to more RM and tracks from his mixtape Mono.

If you're at all interested in fashion - This was the first time Dior had designed custom stage outfits. It was a big deal when it was announced Dior's hottest designers had made an exception - and in a futuristic military theme to go with Bulletproof Boy Scouts and ARMY that showed they were paying attention.
For a few years now, basically on a large scale since the first BBMA performance in 2017, ARMY has been carefully analyzing and tracking signs of the Western art world's interaction with BTS. Academia, too. It is like a litmus test of how open to the unknown the Western world is. Acceptance and appreciation mean one more step forward in the fight against xenophobia and bigotry as a whole. It is just that deep. ARMY work hard promoting, voting, informing, because we have a vested interest in BTS's success both because they deserve it, and because we are in this movement trying to make the world a better place. BTS are the sword and ARMY are the shield, but BTS is also our shield as we are an extension of their voice. This is something not many outsiders understand or even fathom. Not just because it comes out sounding like a cult! ahahahahahah!

Great reaction! You are doing so much better at grasping the core of the lyrics than most reactors.
Korean-English auto-translation is almost impossible, so even the best software is often wrong. This is because the two languages are extremely different, structurally. They have words and grammar elements that do not exist in English, and we have words and elements that do not exist in Korean.
It's easy for me to tell that whoever translated this doesn't speak English. They put the lyrics through a computer translating program, but didn't have an English speaking person check it for accuracy. But like I said, you clearly are able to get past that and find the core meaning. A lot of reactors can't.
At 11:35 there is a typo. The line should be "My heart is torn". In the chorus, RM's line is about crying, but Suga's is about tearing something apart.
At 22:13 "Our focus became irregular" would be better translated as "everything got blurry."
At 22:20, the line about two characters? You were on the right track. "Two characters" correctly translated would be "two syllables" or "two short words".

Yeah all of them hits hard and it just builds through the whole thing and then J-Hope at the end just kills you, as you said it looks like he is about to cry. This is such a great one and this live performance is amazing.
And what you said that this is just the rapline, there are 7 of them all bringing their unike style (or charm as said in Korean) to BTS it's no wonder they are the biggest group in the world. I wish people would get this, they are so often just put in a box of a boyband or kpop, "worldwide sensation" etc and not looked at as the amazing artists they actually are. If they had been solo artists (and american) noone would question their huge popularity and success but now people don't want to look past "boyband".
And the fact that it is artistry on so many levels too with BTS, it's great vocals and rap skills, amazing dance skills, it's amazing creative sets and MV's, it's deep meaningful lyrics, it great production, performances on the highest level etc etc I could go on. And to top it off they are humble, sweet, caring people. And hilarious, let's not forget that.

You got the meaning well. This is the song that got me into BTS so it will always be the most special to me.
What I love most about this song is the way they each build on each other. RM = Tear (as in to cry) Suga = Tear (as in torn) and JHope = fear. When it goes into Suga's verse, he starts off bringing up his subject, to tear/be torn and then references RM's subject of tears by saying you may cry, but for me, tears are a luxury and instead I am just torn apart. Then Jhope starts his verse referring to both of theirs: "Why does it flow (tears), why does it get torn (tear) and then talks about how this was always his fear.
Also just a cool little thing: In the part when Suga says 'yeah yeah yeah burn it' if you look at his performance, he's moving as if he's being shot repeatedly.
I'd love to see you delve into the rapper's mixtapes to really get a feel for the unique styles and POVs of each of them. If I were to rec a track from each:
    Agust D- People
    RM- Uh Good
    JHope- Airplane
Though doing a full listen of each mixtape would be dope as hell too because they all have great flow and storytelling to them.

If you watch the 2018 MAMA Awards they give an acceptance speech for winning the biggest award and Jin brings up about the hard year they had and how they talked about disbanding. The thought of it broke all their hearts and they decided, very luckily, to stay together and push through 💜💜💜

@@ToneyReactions I had not even really listened to these guys until today, but your enthusiasm peaked my interest!! I seem to really like the music after listening with your explanation. Even in another language you can feel their emotion!! Also love their swagger!

You're doing an excellent job interpreting their songs & Bravo 👏 for getting the rapline right ✅👏 This song is one of my faves bc they truly poured their hearts out. Suga wrote this @ a time when BTS thought of disbanding because of all their hardships.

Wow, so glad that you reacted to this song! And also very glad that you caught the vibe of the song, because many people just like their flow and their perfomance (which is great ofc haha) without paying any attention to the lyrics or the emotion they show!!
For me personally Hobi's part always gets me the most, and yes it made me cry numerous times, you were right about that :D
Many other people have already explained the meaning behind the song and knowing that it's no wonder this perfomance is so emotional and raw.
Thanks for your reaction! And don't worry, I think the way you react is very nice. You find a good mixture of letting the song play/letting parts of the song play through (like not stopping in the middle of verses or someone's part) and then going back for the lyrics :))

You are so very good at this, you truly are. You got it right, the song and the guys. Cry? Oh yes, buckets, and every time too. Hobi, (J-Hope) shone in this performance like a supernova.
The thought of that possibility, of the disbanding, even in retrospect, is just too painful to bear, for them, and for us.

  • @mpgisbtsarmybaefighting2838

I love how real this guy is. I'll shed a little tear😪 when he starts to "mingle" with Others tho hihi🤣 but this is why this performance is in ARMYs hearts, the LYRICS and Hobi's Dior!🔥

You already recognize RM, now the dark haired one in this video is J-Hope and shorter one with blonde highlights is Suga. When it comes to their rap segments, Suga is my favorite 🤩
