I remember being soooo weirdly jealous of kaya scodelario’s character as a pre -teen, and now as an adult I am just … absolutely horrified by the idea of dropping a singular girl by herself into an all male camp. Literally could be the plot of a horror movie, what a nightmare

As someone who LOVED the maze runner books in middle school and hated the movies, I am beginning to realize a lot of the issues that were present in the movie was also present in the books. Unfortunately, because of nostalgia, I refuse to pry the love I have for the books out of my dead, cold hands.
Oh, and what makes the movie(and admittedly the books)so anti-climatic at the end is the fact that James Dashner chose to cram every important piece of info into the ending AND into the rest of the books. That itself is frustrating if you had no intention on reading the other books.
@@kianna1082 The maze runner is like useless filler for 7/8 of the book and then everything important shoved into the last chapter the pacing is so awful

Same thing happened to me with The Mortal Instruments series. I reread it for the first time since I was 13 and it’s absolute garbage but I still love it
Why do you hate the movies???? I don’t understand! When this video popped up, I’m like “great” not in a good way!!
The Maze Runner reads like a draft for Nanowrimo where the author was told ¨just keep adding complications until you reach 50K words¨ and he did and never went back to edit any of it to make any sense at all.
I read all 3 books, and watched two movies and i still have no clue what was actually going on, and why they were in a maze 👍👍
Lol it is something that I would probably do, just to reach the goal. I haven't read any of it though so I can't say anything about it. I'm just here for Caleb, lol.
I only read snippets of the book and It doesn't seem appealing to me.

I feel like the problem with dystopian YA books is that they were all centered around some outlandish, gimmicky premise with a twist, and the rest of the plot was based around justifying this weird premise. And that usually proved too difficult for the author to pull off

Except for Hunger Games
@@Error_-ct2vp The Hunger Games did it well, everything else seemed to spin off from that.

Kaya Scodelario, the girl who played Theresa, is English. She was actually a fan favourite to play Katniss after her role in Skins. I actually really like her as an actress but she was... Not great in this
The fact that all the performances in this movie were bad means it was probably a case of bad directing.
she reads more Bella to me
Oh thank fuck she wasn’t cast as Katniss, that would’ve ruined Hunger Games for real
Eh, i genuinely feel like it was because the movie was trash. It’s like how everyone thought that Robert Pattinson couldn’t act because of his role as Edward in twilight. But now he’s playing Batman and he’ll probably knock it put the park because he’s a phenomenal actor.
"so it's time to talk about a character who i live for because she's messy as hell and that's our girl teresa"

“If I got shot I would try to make it about me immediately” same girl I’m wheezing 😭😭😭
Having read the books, every complaint you have becomes way funnier because the in book reason is soooo bad and funny. God I love those books, they were so strange.
Here are just a few ways the books go completely off the rails:
- The Maze is an experiment about people who are immune to the ZOMBIE VIRUS that came from the Sun
- The character's names aren't their real names, they were just named in the lab after important historical figures (Thomas for Thomas Edison, Newt for Isaac Newton, Gally for Galileo, Theresa for Mother Theresa, etc.)
- Yes it's just as cringy in the books
- Their 2nd test after the Maze is to cross a zombie infested desert with pretty much no instructions
- How these tests are supposed to create a cure for the zombie virus is beyond me
- It turns out not all the kids are immune to the zombie virus and Newt contracts it, leading him to beg Thomas to kill him (which he does)
- It is revealed there was a 2nd Maze filled with only girls and 1 boy (names Ari after Aristotle)
- The girls's group apparently solved the Maze 2 weeks or so faster than the boys (idk why this was mentioned in the books)
- The cure to the zombie virus requires harvesting Thomas's brain (don't remember if it was only Thomas or some of the other kids, too)
- Thomas, after seeing the destruction caused by the zombie virus still refuses to be brain harvested
- The story ends with all the kids jumping through a portal into a beautiful meadow that was somehow unaffected by the virus and is completely isolated
- The evil scientists trying to make the cure decide not to look for them
- It is implied the kids will repopulate the Earth after the billions of infected finally die off
- I remember way too much about this book series than is reasonable for any human being to do
And that's without considering the bunch of spin-off books written in an attempt to patch some holes, but mostly contribute nothing but more confusion 😂
The idea of the girls solving the maze faster than the boys is an interesting idea, but makes no sense when the boys don’t have their memories and weren’t raised in a society that teaches boys to isolate from other boys and make them feel that they have “do things on their own”. Like, the point of Lord of The Flies wasn’t that people are inherently horrifically violent and cruel to each other when placed in extreme circumstances, it was that the boys raised in a society that praises violence and cruelty in men was what made them so horrible. So, why would a bunch of boys who know nothing of our current society not cooperate as well as the girls to finish the maze? Humans are inherently cooperative, and when stripped of our modern societal roles and ideas that make us what we are, I think that the girl test group and the boy test group would finish the maze around the same time.
I’m gonna actually have to correct you on the virus comment you made. It didn’t come from the sun. The earth was destroyed after the sun blew up (solar flare). Of course a lot of people died but a few people still remained. Far too many for the existing government to give resources to. So they created a disease (what we know as the flare) and shot the infested arrows at people.
It wasn’t supposed to be as bad as it turned out, but everyone knows the man made virus to kill off some human population trope. It went airborne and there was nothing anyone could do.
Eventually they found out that some kids could survive the flare. So a bunch of government officials, doctors, and scientists came together and were like, hey we can use these kids to create some type of cure.
One thing I didn’t really understand though was how they can use the difference of the immune children and non immune to create a cure, but I was like whatever.
I don’t remember exactly how they came to the conclusion that they needed to harvest Thomas’s brain, but I think Ava Paige realized there was something special about him after trying it out on other kids.
But there’s that plot hole that gets me every time and even with the movies. How does it take about 10-12 years for you specially trained doctors and scientists to find out that Thomas was the cure all along. Like they’ve done so many tests, have taken so much blood. I guess it was just for convenience of the plot, so I can’t really question it to much.
it never says the virus comes from the sun. it just says that it comes after the sun scorches the world
in fact in the 4th book doesnt it mention that the virus was actually started by those people in the bergs who were shooting people with darts/

I FEEL HEARD. Let’s just pause and think about how they were maze running to create maps of the maze but didn’t realize the maze was spelling out letters?!?? How are the characters this stupid? I remember reading that shit and throwing the book against a wall because it was such dumb writing.
The irony being that all the characters were specifically meant to have above average intelligence.
Honestly the whole series was a mess with the most unsatisfying cop out ending of all time.
It would've made sense if they were drawing the maps upside down. Lol. And if you're not looking for letters, you won't see them as easily.
Oh well.
It would have made sense had they all been illiterate until the newest person shows up it would make more sense than what they did
@@LexTime89 the fact that they're named after scientific figures. How embarrassing...
It would've been so much better if they'd figured out the letters but it was in a code. Maybe with either Theresa or Thomas being the key, to ensure they can't leave until everyone who's going in the maze/glade does.
the actor that played newt voiced ferb in phineas and ferb. I understand the obsession
So many girls I knew shipped themselves with Ferb so it makes sense
What?!
He did???
You could have atleast but a “fun fact”
The secret to Maze Runner is James Dashner read Ender's Game and said, "I can do that."
and failed miserably
at least copy the mind game part bc that made sense! like how is putting actual teenagers in danger supposed to help with the cure, instead of doing simulations that you can scan their brains for
i read this book like 8 years ago?? and all i remember was imagining the creatures as tin foil balls with toothpicks sticking out of them.
This is hysterical
Omg what same asdfghjklkgfs
Hahaha, I remember the descriptions being so vague, all my friends pictured them completely differently. I thought they were like giant slugs on treads, with the metal limbs
@@Looneylovegood I had a severe problem with overactive imagination (like horror wise, i would get terrified by small things and my brain would go buck wild, still kinda does, i just don't get the crippling fear...) so I imagined them as these huge terrifying demon things and noped out halfway through the first book. Kinda glad I did tbh. Weirdly enough I was fine with harry potter, the hunger games and divergent.
I really enjoyed the Maze Runner movie and it has a soft spot in my heart, but I know it’s everything that surrounded it, and not the thing itself, you know? My friend read it and was so excited for the movie, and then my other friend is obsessed with Dylan O’Brien, and I just have this random attachment to Thomas Sangster, so we all went to see it together and I was just happy to be excited about something! Then we whispered in the theater and made fun of it the whole time, but we do that even if we’re watching an award winning artistic masterpiece. I just miss having fun I guess is what I’m realizing.
That sounds really fun
I remember fun! I also liked going places with people and doing things together. 😭
that sounds so so cool wow
the maze runner books were the first series I read in English (it's my second language) and I literally had no idea of what was going on 99% of the time haha I actually had gotten the third book from my school's library and I hated it so much that I forgot about its existence, than I had to pay a fee because I was supposed to return it in May and by August and I still had the book laying on my table :D (the fee was like 60 reais which was worth 2 months of my allowance. i wasn't happy)
I find this so relatable, this was my second series after hunger games and i was craving that dystopian goodness. My friends hyped this series up and lent me the first book, my response was "this was okay, i bet it gets better on the second" cause i was comparing it to hunger games. It all went downhill from there though, i remember being mostly confused and questioning so many things, to the point that i no longer feel immersed. Peer pressure lowkey made me pretend i loved the series when the hype from the movies came about though ✋
Omg me too, the first book I read in English was the scorch trials (no idea why I didn’t start with the first one ) and I literally had no idea what was going on and acted like I liked it 💀

“Do I think it’s funny that they killed the innocent child at the end of the movie for literally no reason? -Yes, Yes I do”
Think about it from a psychological perspective. Gally didn't want to leave the maze because he had probably become so reliant on that area that he could not bear the thought of leaving. He had no idea what waited beyond the maze and I think he didn't want to be thrust out into the world. It would have been shocking and he would have felt wrong-footed as if the sheer size of the outside would have crushed him. It was too much for him after living inside the maze where he knew what to do and how to keep himself safe and alive. Having a stranger come into his carefully constructed home and immediately want to change everything must have been damaging to his mental health. This was the reason why he hated Thomas because Thomas was a risk and a danger to Gally's overall quality of life. He did not want change because he was afraid and he acted so aggressively because he desperately wanted for things to return to 'normal' before Thomas' arrival. It was like he had developed Stockholm syndrome for the maze and that's why he said he 'belonged' to the maze.
yeah exactly the maze is like his emotionally abusive and controlling daddy
Yeah you hit the nail on the head. That’s exactly how I saw it when I watched the movies

“a group of men go out to run… because it’s the maze runner” 🤣
“So this movie starts with our main character whose name is Thomas... I’m not gonna say anything else about that” 👁👄👁
I feel like the feud between Gally and Thomas was actually very self explanatory. Gally has all his friends that have basically turned into family in the maze, they all have a system and rules that they go by, in a weird way it’s like his home. As humans we don’t really wanna explore the unknown, because it’s terrifying. And that’s what Thomas represents for him, Thomas is quite literally his opposite, the feeling of wanting to find out more despite the scariness of it. So it makes sense that these two didn’t really see eye to eye. Or at least I thought when I first watched it🤷♀️
The reason why people love Newt is because in the books he is one of the only people who are actually nice to Thomas and doesn't refuse to tell him useful information for no reason. And he's pretty chill compared to the other kids who are always brooding or yelling at Thomas for no reason. At least that's why I liked him lol

When I was a preteen, Thomas Brodie Sangster was my biggest crush in the whole world. It did kinda crush me when I found out he was 25 lol, but he inspired me to read the books and get into YA dystopian.
Fun fact, he wasn’t the first one. Him and Asa Butterfield were my prime crushes, before Timothee Chalamet came around, and all three somehow got me back into literature so their respective film and book series are near and dear to my heart, in spite of their many flaws.
awwww
As someone who never read or watched the maze runner, my only exposure to the fandom was mazerunner fans getting confused at fans of the kpop group shinee and shinee fans getting confused at mazerunner fans because a member of shinee is named minho and there's apparently a person named minho in mazerunner.
Maybe I misinterpreted the book when I was a teen, but I remember they were like “oooh there’s a girl! One girl only! Why one girl only?! She must be special! But how?” And then the explanation was that everyone put into the maze was smart and that’s why there was only one girl. Because girls can’t be smart. And they were also named after like famous people in science like Thomas Edison, Issac Newton, Albert Einstein, etc. and she was named after Mother Teresa, you know, the famous scientist. There are no other female scientists because women can’t be scientists. And there are no other female historical figures, so let’s just not look for any and put one girl. Because women suck!
Also, he said that he didn’t make gay characters because he didn’t really have romance in the book, but doesn’t Thomas get into a love triangle with some of the very few women in the story? And didn’t all the men lose their collective minds when they saw the first girl ever? Statistically speaking, 5-8 of them should be lgbt, but none of them decided to date each other? Because there’s no romance in the book. Except for the straight love triangle.
Yeah, needless to say I gave up on the series after the first book.
this sucks so much
Someone else mentioned that in the other books, there's a girls test group just like theirs that apparently finished their Maze test before the boys-focused group did, which is interesting. But unless it's elaborated on, it sounds like a bit of a pro-girl afterthought of a detail.
I figured the reason romance in general might be avoided in a huge part of the series is because it's targeted more at boys, and that's understandable. Dystopians are typically heavily dependent on the romance element from the start, so that might make this series, or at least the first book, more appealing to some. Even girls who don't care for the romance in dystopians. But if there's a love triangle at some point, nuts to that theory.
Plus, like Caleb mentioned, it's hard not to think about the grim sexual implications of what could've possibly taken place when Teresa got there. Or even BEFORE she got there, assuming that yeah, no way are they all straight. It's okay not to touch upon it, but it's very hard not think about.
I'm confused, because I read this book series and watched the movie, and I never got the impression that the reason there was one girl was because "girls aren't smart". There was an all-girls group in the second book with one single boy.
@@fabplays6559 right ...
@@kartoonfanatic i recently read the first book out of pure curiosity and i was also scared for teresa. she was in a comatose state for like 4 days after she got into the maze!! and then there was this one detail about how gally looked at her when she was coming up that just made it seem extra creepy. and she was always under the care of the med jacks so luckily nothing happened to her but if i was in that situation i woulda forced myself to wake up and lock myself in the prison😭
The first Maze Runner is literally so iconic and quotable. I never read the books but the modern take on lord of flies is super interesting , and the scene of Thomas running into the maze for the first time is cinematic masterpiece. Like the zoom and slow Mo and the fact that Thomas doesn’t even really know these people but is willing to risk running in to save someone. I think most of the 2010’s ya movie adaptations have a great first movie and lesser than sequels (except for hunger games).
Anyways, long comment 😭. Glad your making videos again!!
I will not stand for the Newt slander! He's the reason I held on hope that the series would get better, but once Thomas had to kill him because he was turning into a zombie I knew...I had wasted my time -_-
I had a huge obsession with the maze runner when I was in middle school. I remember really loving the books and the characters, especially newt, who I was completely broken after reading his death scene. I admit that the story makes no sense and I still don't get exactly how those tests and experiments were gonna help in any way for a cure but they were still really fun to read. The chapters were fast paced and I liked how there was almost no romance. Yeah it's pretty dumb but I think it's meant to be read/watched for pure entertainment and not for serious critical analysis
When I met dashner he said that Lost (the show) was a huge inspiration for his series and it shows
The editing in this video is *chef's kiss* Caleb. Would definitely love to see a review on the Shiver trilogy (Shiver, Linger, Forever). As a kid I thought those books were IT. Going back and rereading as an adult has me questioning my past taste in books
the production value of this channel just went up 50% with the addition of the karaoke microphone 😌
My experience reading this book: "Just answer his questions! Any of them! Literally any of them! Please for the love of God."
and they never did the end
It’s just good to hear from you Caleb! I feel like I’ve been reunited with a long lost friend. Hope it continues!!
*The king has returned*
“If I got shot I would try to make it about me immediately” LMAO
when you see him in his recent pics (and as Adam Warlock) you definitely won't be thinking him as "fish-looking kid" anymore 😭😭
“The fans of the maze runner which I didn’t know exist” lmaoo I miss your videos so much. Glad you’re back!
To be honest my head canon was always:
The author had an traumatic event in his childhood where he took a lot of pride in what fast of a runner he was. And then suddenly there was this one kid that was somewhat jealous and annoyed of his bragging that said something along the lines of "So what? This won't take you anywhere in life so shut the f* up!" this traumatized him so deeply that he wrote a weird self insert fanfiction in wich he was the hero who's only mentionable trait was to run really fast and he's the hero/ chosen one one because of it. So his fast running would safe the world. At least in his dreams.
This head Canon feels so real to me that I sometimes feel sorry for the author for this one bully shattering all he was in one single sentence 😢
Parasocial relationships this, parasocial relationships that, THIS IS MY BEST FRIEND. WE ARE HAVING A DISCUSSION
Never seen or read maze runner, but I'm still here for this.
having a new Caleb video to add to my comfort videos playlist truly is a blessing 💕
I literally wrote in my copy of the death cure ‘I miss you newt’ when he was unalived lmao
i'm so glad you're back. you are one of the few youtubers who can make me laugh out loud. when i'm having a bad day, i just watch any one of your videos and my mood improves honestly.
Dylan O’Brien is literally the only reason I rewatch these movies
So glad to see Calebs presence back on CZcams, it’s so energizing and uplifting
You legit have no idea how excited I am to see you posting again! Missed you a lot!
Also, yeah, I'm not a fan of Maze Runner either. Tried reading the first book, got through the first chapter, hated literally everything, and immediately sent it back to the library.
i'm going to rewatch this video like 20 times...im so glad to have you back
So glad your back, hope you do the rest of this series. Always love your cuts and add ins. The very best!!
AHHH CALEB, I gotta sleep but I'm so hyped to watch this when I get back. I'm so glad you've finally made your glorious return
I love the phrase "when I get back" for waking up tomorrow 😂 it's so creative and I'm stealing it for daily use thanks
@@TheGhostWriter117 Haha, I’m returning from dreamland. Sleep is a place 😌
Did you even have a hiatus? Your content, editing, choice of video clips are like you've been consistently doing this for years and honing your craft? I guess talent doesn't go away. Keep up the great work
everytime i see the newt novella in a book store another 10 years is taken from my lifespan
I think the thing with Gally being totally against leaving was only adressed in passing in the movies or the books, but it was that WICKD took over his mind or something. The funny part is that after he said that literally no one cares or ever addresses it again
thats another thing the movies do is just that, "we dont need to show you, we'll just tell you" every single.
Instant click even though I respectfully disagree when it comes to the first book and movie. Your videos popping up again makes me so happy.
same I’ve rewatched the first movie so many times and I still love it
HELP I DIED WITH THE NEWT SONG 😭😭😭😭😭💀💀😭😭😭
“keep on stinging girl” got me good I had to take a pause and compose myself
I remember the books made me unreasonably angry bc of the way they wrote the girls 😭😭😭 Like it's bad BAD they were done soooo dirty like what the fuck
welcome back king! the microphone is a truly amazing addition to your videos..
I'm devastated you didn't make videos for the other movies. This is the only way for me to consume the Maze Runner series.
Oh real quick, can I mention that in the books Thomas and Theresa could talk to each other through their minds. Like telepathy, but for absolutely no reason. It was barely even relevant in the plot and made actually no sense.
"If I got shot I would try to make it about me inmediately" so true bestie
