I think my biggest issue with Snape is that he got a “redemption arc” and Draco didn’t. Like Snape got rejected by a girl and joined a literal wizard n*zi group and was totally fine with it until the girl who rejected him died like ??? I hate the whole redemption arc where a character is literally the absolute worst for the entirety of the series until the very last second where they do something “heroic” and sacrifice themselves and die which somehow absolves them of all accountability lmao like it’s just so lazy to me. Draco should have gotten a redemption arc instead of Snape and I will die on that hill

@@ericam8968 I think that Draco deserved a redemption arc way more than Snape because (and 100% take this with as many grains of salt as you want because I’ve seen all the movies and watched a lot of HP deep dives but I’ve only personally read the first few books so do with that information what you will) Snape from my memory was actively involved with Voldemort and the Deatheaters and had no problem with what they were doing until Lily died. He showed pretty much no remorse to me not to mention he actually abused his students to the point that he was Neville’s boggart like ????? He never apologized to anyone that I know of and all he said to Harry was “you have your mothers eyes” and that was enough for Harry to name is literal child after him (I also think Dumbledore is a bad person and didn’t deserve Harry’s blind adoration but that’s a topic for another time). Draco on the other hand was still a child and I think that Rowling just kind of hated him for no reason because like he never really does anything in the books or movies to my knowledge that’s like actually worthwhile except the muggle slur thing in the second one. Like other than that he’s just a random bully and even when he was essentially forced to join the Deatheaters he never looked or acted like he wanted to do it? Like that becomes very apparent in the 6th one when he spends a majority of the runtime crying and having panic attacks in the bathroom. I think that Draco could have had a Prince Zuko type of redemption arc but Rowling is straight up just not a good writer and I think she didn’t care enough about Draco to do anything meaningful with him. I feel like this is also kind of an unpopular opinion (maybe it’s not but I am not nor was I ever even really in the HP fandom) but I think that there was a really good opportunity for Draco and Hermione to develop a relationship. I don’t dislike her and Ron but I’m a slut for enemies to lovers and really good redemption arcs.
There was so much potential in a Draco redemption arc, like it isn’t necessary for the story but it could have been so cool and sent a good message about self improvement and outgrowing what your parents raised you to believe. I’m always gonna be sad we didn’t get one :(

I think Snape is utterly fascinating psychologically in the books but in the films, his role is SEVERELY chopped down. Alan Rickman was probably the reason he was as memorable in the films as he was but that specific moment in POA is just...so freaking good.

DOLORES IS CAMP. YES. FINALLY. I mean, I always hated her as a character for obvious reasons, but I rewatched the movies recently and this performance couldn't be unseen.
My main defense for Goblet of Fire being one of my favorites is that I just love the concept of the Triwizard Tournament itself. Probably stems from my love of games and competition shows, but things like the Triwizard Tournament, Hunger Games, Squid Game - that’s my jam.
But really, I had this epiphany that I think I chose Goblet of Fire as my favorite because pretty much everyone says Prisoner of Azkaban is their favorite, and I think I wanted to be “not like other fans 💅” (I realized I do this with other things too, like a singer’s “fan-favorite” song not being my favorite.) But there’s a reason so many people love PoA; it is the best of the films, hands down.
Personally I like goblet of fire the most because we get to see what the wizard world outside of Hogwarts loos (with the different schools and stuff). It extended the universe for me. Also I guess it’s the last movie that felt more like light (except the ending) after the fourth movie/ book it good more darker
I always liked it the most because it was the turning point in the series (like Harry Potter's equivalent to Catching Fire or The Empire Strikes Back). For some reason those types of installments have always been my favorites of any series, because now everything I thought I knew is blown open and the only way for me to know what's coming is to keep following along. Stories like Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, the first Hunger Games, or the first Star Wars film I watched (The Phantom Menace) are what introduced me to the series and made me want to follow it. Catching Fire, Empire Strikes Back (or, in my case Revenge of the Sith), and The Goblet of Fire are what made me stick around because they made sure things didn't stay formulaic. Goblet of Fire was like "Okay the first 3 were fun kids mysteries with magic but now the wizard Nazi's are back so shits real now." And I just remember reading the last few chapters of that book as a kid and being more glued to a book than I had ever been up to that point because now the tension felt even more...well tense.
the best part of the first movie (aside from the general vibes) is the little kid acting. like specifically the part where hermione is like "i checked this out months ago for a bit of light reading" and rons like ":o thats light?" and harry shushes him and hermione just ">>:llll" its stellar it cant be replicated

Lupin is best character hands-down. Umbridge owns the music of any scene she’s in. I don’t know how to express that feeling any more clearly; she owns the music. And Trelawney has technically never been wrong.
It really hit me hearing Caleb talk about his childhood. As a trans guy, my experiences in childhood was mostly just being depressed, confused and suicidal due to such severe dysphoria from an early age, not being allowed to have my hair or clothes how I wanted them, then it got even worse during puberty etc. I used HP to escape my problems as a kid (can't enjoy it anymore due to the author but I'm glad other people can still get that same joy from it that I once did). During my teens I lived vicariously through characters I'd roleplay as online. When I was 13 I found out what being trans was and came out with the right words etc but my parents were ignorant and didn't understand. That happened several times and I was dismissed which hurt but I still love them, I blame society more than them individually. I was finally able to come out without it being dismissed as something I'd 'grow out of' when I was 18, but then I lost the one thing that got me through it all as a kid lol, the author went on some transphobic twitter rant the same day I got my hair cut, but nothing could've dampened the sheer euphoria I felt looking in the mirror and seeing my new haircut. I'm now 20, and I feel like I've only just been able to start truly living and enjoying life being myself for 2 years while everyone else around me has had 20. I want to be alive now, and I wish I hadn't had all that wasted time being so depressed I could hardly leave my bed. While I relate to what Caleb said about letting his childhood go, it's a different type of pain for me. The pain of knowing I won't ever be able to experience a happy, comfortable childhood myself, and the pain and frustration of knowing that that was completely preventable had I just been allowed to express myself the way I wanted to, that on top of the added stresses of transphobia in society and losing transphobic family members etc etc. Letting a kid who wants to express themselves differently do that is completely reversible, if you're worried that they'll get bullied, chances are they already are being bullied for standing out despite your efforts to make them fit in, and if they end up growing out of it then cool but if they don't then at least they'll have had a much better childhood because you let them express themselves how they wanted to and in turn made them happier and more comfortable. I hope my little rant doesn't make anyone who isn't trans feel that they can't 'mourn' the loss of their childhood/teenagehood or anything because your experiences are completely valid too, I just have a slightly different one and it's all ok. And sorry for putting a kinda sad comment on such a lovely video lol, Caleb did such a great job of this video :)
Ok so I've heard from therapists that if you had a sad or traumatic childhood, as an adult you can go and do fun childish things that you couldn't do or enjoy when you were younger, like getting a build a bear, or taking a baking class, stuff like that. Sorry if this is too intrusive, I just felt like sharing.

@@superdrwholock Speaking of enjoying "childish" things as an adult to care for your inner child, as someone who grew up in an abusive household Percy Jackson was my biggest coping mechanism, the author Rick Riordan has a huge place in my heart as one of the only good things in my childhood and since I reread his books every so often I can say they still hold up (I'm 19) so maybe give them a try. Also, I understand the frustration of feeling like you only now get to truly experience life and feel like you missed out on a lot but we still have a lot to live, we're still young :)

Your life comments at the end really got to me. I am in the same boat as you, but I have many years left in college. I am trying not to leave that excitement and passion for fun things like movies and such, but it is not easy when you are overworked at work and are also a full-time student. Since I started college I have kept some time sacred: Time to cook for fun (I am a culinary grad so cooking stresses me out bc it feels like work), having a movie night once a week, and having one day with no classes or work of any kind. The last one has been particularly hard, but it lets me have a day to play video games, read a book, go to the park with my dogs, see friends--it is time that is just for me. I have only casually watched the Harry Potter movies on cable marathons, but your extensive review makes me want to give them a shot.

The Goblet of Fire is the worst movie, and you're right to say it. Everyone loves it and I've never understood why. My dramatic child self hated it so much that I fully walked out of the theater during the other schools' intro.

I mean, I always hated her as a character for obvious reasons, but I rewatched the movies recently and this performance couldn't be unseen.
My main defense for Goblet of Fire being one of my favorites is that I just love the concept of the Triwizard Tournament itself. Probably stems from my love of games and competition shows, but things like the Triwizard Tournament, Hunger Games, Squid Game - that’s my jam.
But really, I had this epiphany that I think I chose Goblet of Fire as my favorite because pretty much everyone says Prisoner of Azkaban is their favorite, and I think I wanted to be “not like other fans 💅”
(I realized I do this with other things too, like a singer’s “fan-favorite” song not being my favorite.)
But there’s a reason so many people love PoA; it is the best of the films, hands down.

I always liked it the most because it was the turning point in the series (like Harry Potter's equivalent to Catching Fire or The Empire Strikes Back). For some reason those types of installments have always been my favorites of any series, because now everything I thought I knew is blown open and the only way for me to know what's coming is to keep following along.
Stories like Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, the first Hunger Games, or the first Star Wars film I watched (The Phantom Menace) are what introduced me to the series and made me want to follow it. Catching Fire, Empire Strikes Back (or, in my case Revenge of the Sith), and The Goblet of Fire are what made me stick around because they made sure things didn't stay formulaic.
Goblet of Fire was like "Okay the first 3 were fun kids mysteries with magic but now the wizard Nazi's are back so shits real now." And I just remember reading the last few chapters of that book as a kid and being more glued to a book than I had ever been up to that point because now the tension felt even more...well tense.

My favorite thing about prisoner of azkaban is that even when the camera pans away from some characters and switches to another certain set of characters, you still hear the background characters talking off camera. It makes it feel like a hazy memory. It's incredible

It really hit me hearing Caleb talk about his childhood. As a trans guy, my experiences in childhood was mostly just being depressed, confused and suicidal due to such severe dysphoria from an early age, not being allowed to have my hair or clothes how I wanted them, then it got even worse during puberty etc. I used HP to escape my problems as a kid (can't enjoy it anymore due to the author but I'm glad other people can still get that same joy from it that I once did). During my teens I lived vicariously through characters I'd roleplay as online. When I was 13 I found out what being trans was and came out with the right words etc but my parents were ignorant and didn't understand. That happened several times and I was dismissed which hurt but I still love them, I blame society more than them individually. I was finally able to come out without it being dismissed as something I'd 'grow out of' when I was 18, but then I lost the one thing that got me through it all as a kid lol, the author went on some transphobic twitter rant the same day I got my hair cut, but nothing could've dampened the sheer euphoria I felt looking in the mirror and seeing my new haircut. I'm now 20, and I feel like I've only just been able to start truly living and enjoying life being myself for 2 years while everyone else around me has had 20. I want to be alive now, and I wish I hadn't had all that wasted time being so depressed I could hardly leave my bed.
While I relate to what Caleb said about letting his childhood go, it's a different type of pain for me. The pain of knowing I won't ever be able to experience a happy, comfortable childhood myself, and the pain and frustration of knowing that that was completely preventable had I just been allowed to express myself the way I wanted to, that on top of the added stresses of transphobia in society and losing transphobic family members etc etc.
Letting a kid who wants to express themselves differently do that is completely reversible, if you're worried that they'll get bullied, chances are they already are being bullied for standing out despite your efforts to make them fit in, and if they end up growing out of it then cool but if they don't then at least they'll have had a much better childhood because you let them express themselves how they wanted to and in turn made them happier and more comfortable.
I hope my little rant doesn't make anyone who isn't trans feel that they can't 'mourn' the loss of their childhood/teenagehood or anything because your experiences are completely valid too, I just have a slightly different one and it's all ok. And sorry for putting a kinda sad comment on such a lovely video lol, Caleb did such a great job of this video :)
Ok so I've heard from therapists that if you had a sad or traumatic childhood, as an adult you can go and do fun childish things that you couldn't do or enjoy when you were younger, like getting a build a bear, or taking a baking class, stuff like that. Sorry if this is too intrusive, I just felt like sharing.

@@superdrwholock Speaking of enjoying "childish" things as an adult to care for your inner child, as someone who grew up in an abusive household Percy Jackson was my biggest coping mechanism, the author Rick Riordan has a huge place in my heart as one of the only good things in my childhood and since I reread his books every so often I can say they still hold up (I'm 19) so maybe give them a try. Also, I understand the frustration of feeling like you only now get to truly experience life and feel like you missed out on a lot but we still have a lot to live, we're still young :)

Your life comments at the end really got to me. I am in the same boat as you, but I have many years left in college. I am trying not to leave that excitement and passion for fun things like movies and such, but it is not easy when you are overworked at work and are also a full-time student.
Since I started college I have kept some time sacred: Time to cook for fun (I am a culinary grad so cooking stresses me out bc it feels like work), having a movie night once a week, and having one day with no classes or work of any kind. The last one has been particularly hard, but it lets me have a day to play video games, read a book, go to the park with my dogs, see friends--it is time that is just for me.

The Goblet of Fire is the worst movie, and you're right to say it. Everyone loves it and I've never understood why. My dramatic child self hated it so much that I fully walked out of the theater during the other schools' intro.
it’s my favorite book so i actually did enjoy seeing things like the World Cup and Yule ball, but overall it was a disappointing adaptation
