    Im not against reducing emmisions. However If you take into account what it takes to build the batteries alone, its more than counter productive. Combustion engines are so efficient these days, it costs more in pollution to produce batteries than drill for oil.

      I don't know whether it would be the same for trucks, but an electric car can be as much as twice the weight of the same ICE car. This puts additional wear onto both the roads and the vehicles tyres. Heavier vehicles must cause more damage to the road surface, and the extra wear on the tyres will produce extra rubber particles to be produced. Both are extra costs, more frequent road repairs and more frequent tyre replacements. The extra brake dust produced by a heaver vehicle could be at least partially offset by regenerative breaking so that at least may not be as bad.

    I'm sure this was a fun and very interesting trip for you. Usually batteries doesn't like the cold, so I'm curious how long the batteries in these electric trucks will last. I assume it was pretty cold in Norway, so that country is a perfect location to test the durability of the battery. I agree with you that it's great these electric vehicles are super quiet, but it's also scary a bit. Just like you said, somebody can easily step in front of the truck, simply because he/she didn't hear the engine noise. It's indeed a good thing the truck looks exactly like a diesel version on the outside, therefore hopefully drivers will accept them easier in the future. Yes charging is a challenge at the moment and currently an electric vehicle wouldn't be the most practical for the job you do daily. I think you're right, it'll start with smaller trucks doing more local work (back at their yard/depot every night) and as range increases and infrastructure grows we'll start seeing long-haul electric trucks too. 👍👍

I don't really understand how all this works but it seems like some kind of solution to having electric vehicles that have the range and don't require a long time to recharge and don't need a lot of heavy batteries using rare earth metals to make them.

No one has considered all the pollution that is being created in mining the lithium, plus how do you dispose of these batteries when they are no longer active. Cold weather is very detremental to these batteries, and cuts their travel distances in half.

    @TruckerReena Před rokem +2

    Definitely going to be an issue for the V8 lovers without that V8 sound. Like you though, I agree that electric is the way forward but there's three main issues. Firstly, the range. No good at all for those long hauls across the UK unless you have fast chargers at either end. 2nd is the costs for replacement batteries although the cost of this might be offset by the lower costs on engine maintenance. 3rd is the electricity infrastructure, we don't have what we need for cars let alone trucks too, and that's not just the charging points but also the extra cabling to carry all of the extra current needed. Could you imagine one day, a truck stop full of trucks packed in tight like a tin of sardines? They'd be no room to fit all of those charging points and as you're aware, many places can't offer even the basic of facilities for truckers as it is. I think the truth is that we still have a very long way to go but only a short amount of time. 2030 until the last diesel engine rolls off the production line? Not long. Great vid BTW 🙂

    • @jemmawarren27
      @jemmawarren27  Před rokem

      They think it will be only 50% by 2030 as like you say it won’t be suitable for every type of work but to be honest there are so many large companies now that it could be possible for as they have depots all over. I think as they are replacing cables they are putting in higher capacity as I understand, ready for the extra power needed. I think it’s going to be really interesting as like you say…. It’s a big task

    • @TruckerReena
      @TruckerReena Před rokem

      @Jemma Warren yeah I was reminded when I saw your post about a school I used to work in that was built around the 1950s. It was fitted with computers all over the place, fax machines, printers and photocopiers etc. During periods of heavy use, the fluorescent lights in the staff room used to flicker because of the excessive drain on the electricity feed into the school. It just wasn't designed for that sort of load. I can see things here in the UK will get like that. I'm not sure it is possible for the larger companies right now tbh. I worked for a while at Hermes in Rugby, massive site full of trucks, trailers and of course all of the warehousing too. But I can't imagine how they'd implement, or even find the space to charge 50/60+ tractor units. Change has to happen, but I think we're still a long way off from being able to meet those targets.

    We are at the horse drawn cart stage of electrification, we are nowhere near in terms of technology or infrastructure. What happens when 300 trucks pull into the services to charge for 90 minutes? Totally unfeasable.
    And then there is the issue of that nasty lithium, mining it, and then storing it at end of life. Not to mention the dangers it poses when they get damaged in an accident.

    I can't see a transport company being happy with its drivers sitting around for 90 mins each charge, if the wheels ain't turning the truck ain't earning..
    What if you can't get on a charging point straight away as well, that's more waiting around on top of the 90 mins ??? 😳

    Cost, range and charging times are prohibitive and will stay that way until we are forced to use electric vehicles alone

    All the points made by others are valid, but to me the biggest issue with electric vehicles is the base product for the batteries...Lithium, it's such a filthy wasteful process and is causing massive pollution in the areas it's mined, and once the batteries are knackered the Lithium cannot be recycled... Best place for electric vehicles is in city centres where there are not enough tress to offset the carbon emissions of internal combustion engines.

    • @Upemm

      Not to mention where the lithium actually comes from and is “gathered”.

    4:31 Give up the make up, it would save a lot, and cut wasteful testing.
    Also cut your worry level.
    You don’t have to impress anyone.
    Being a driver is more then enough for anyone red blooded.

    Electric powered emergency vehicles for example would not be a viable option and I know that’s already being looked at, I have no problems with battery vehicles on the road as this is one potential option to replace diesel and petrol fuelled vehicles. For heavy goods driving I don’t think electric is viable but would be ok for short range routes and construction industry plant.
    If you have seen any articles on JCB they are actively working on hydrogen powered engines which I believe are now in production and have been working with small trucks and vans to see how this new tech performs ( apparently quite well).
    I see no reason why hydrogen is not a viable option for transport and even domestic use and it’s up to the government to push this clean burn option forward ( I bet they won’t!). As for what we have now I do agree the dirtiest vehicles that are blasting out heavy smoke should be taken off the road and keep what we have well maintained on the road for as long as is possible!
    I have no doubt over next few years the used vehicle market will go crazy around 2030 with people looking for quality used diesels and petrol vehicles!
    Sorry it’s a bit long…..maybe I should have done a video lol

    Electric trucks won't work. They just don't have the power over the longer period of time needed.

    I just dont think all these electric powered things are as clean as they make out, producing them cant be clean then there is having to generate electric to power them! I think electric vehicles have a future as city hoppers but not long distance.

    the main problem is the charging network for cars is rubbish at the moment to charge a truck i think is a big negative point and then the time to charge as well , weve all been at the fuel islands waiting in turn to fuel what are the ques going to be like waiting to charge , for the moment i think electric trucks are for close to depot work and not the usual trunking work until a better infrastructure is made, in a way im glad that my time with trucks is coming to a end been through euro 0 to euro 6 best leave leave the new generation trucks to the new breed of mechanics who wear big rubber gloves and rubber wellies . and by the way makeup wasnt that bad should see the missus after a night out bloody cyclops

      😅😅 I hope she doesn’t read that! Probably something my better half would say about me 🤣 I can see where you a coming from though with the comment on the trucks and I think it will start with the bigger companies who can afford it

    maybe electric trucks will work for city work other wise no way it will be hydrogen that carry's on from diesel, i couldn't think of anything worse driving a truck that doesn't sound like one. besides the environmental damage caused by the manufacture and disposal of just the batteries is the biggest con going. save the loud pipes!!

  • @Andy-tm9ns
    @Andy-tm9ns Před rokem

    The Government won’t catch up with the PowerPoints till after 2030 And I’m sure it will be costly to buy these electric Vehicles. Also you will lose time during the day with having to power the trucks. Worse will be an accident and electric trucks stuck in heavy traffic. M 25 standstill. Unless they put fast charging on there as well. Didn’t notice the make up.

    • @jemmawarren27

      There are a lot of jobs where there is less driving and more other work that would be suitable for electric trucks

    I don't think electric vehicles are the answer. The environmental and human damage is horrific. Hydrogen power is the way forward and you can keep your V8. Refueling through existing modified filling stations will be easy and quick.

    Nice video. I have been following Volta Trucks (www.youtube.com/@VoltaTrucks) for a while now, their low, central driving position is a great idea especially as they are focused on the town/city delivery, so different to what you do.

    After u take in the carbon used 2, make the truck and batteries, and it will take around 15 to 25 years b4 its carbon neutral
