  • Welcome to one of our heaviest reviews to date!
    Mat has got his hands on two Volvo HGVs, and he’s about to give them the proper carwow review treatment!
    What we have here are two lorries provided to us by Volvo - one’s diesel powered, and one’s electric powered. Naturally being lorries, the layout of these two massive automotives is far different to a usual car, but that won’t stop Mat from talking you through their design, interior layout and practicality. Just wait until you see how much storage there is in the cabin!
    What’s more, he’ll also take them both for a drive, and even launch them!
    You might think it’s a bit pointless launching lorries, but trust us, these two massive machines pack a serious punch! The diesel HGV is powered by a huge 16.1-litre straight-six twin-turbo that can put down 760hp and 3,550Nm of torque! As for the EV, it comes with three electric motors which combine for 666hp and 2,400Nm!
    Want to find out what Mat thinks of these HGVs? You’ll need to stick with him for this all-new review!

    I’m a truck driver myself I can honestly say the FH16 is mind blowing. I took 1 down to Italy a few years ago fully loaded and I cannot explain what it’s like to have that kind of weight on and climb a mountain without slowing down! My regular truck is 500bhp and it struggles on big hills when it’s at max weight. When you start a hill climb in the FH16 and expect it to start slowing down but it just keeps on going that’s a surreal feeling that’s where you realise you’ve got serious power underneath you 😂😂

    8:17 This is called a "jake brake", and it works by reducing the exhaust flow. The net effect is that pistons have a harder time pushing the exhaust fumes out, thus are slowed down, and this is what provides engine braking.
    Its primary use is to save brake pads and discs, not fuel, although when you use a jake brake, the fuel injection will also be cut off. So yes, there will be _some_ fuel savings, but the brakes are actually the main benefactors here.

    • @lukelanam6045
      @lukelanam6045 Před rokem +4

      Actually a Jake brake functions by first shutting off the injectors and then as the pistons come up on the compression stroke the "Jake housings" located on top of the valvetrain open the exhaust valves releasing the compressed air. This slows the truck and engine down by making it work against the compression without injecting any fuel to supply more energy to the engine.

    • @ottohoel5150

      @AdmiralDantheman Před rokem +5

      It can be, but the engine brake shuts off the engine and stops fuel going in therefore is more economical. Also it saves brake wear and tyre ware from harsh braking. Especially in the UK brakes over heating isn't really an issue for the most part and you have to remember going downhill using the engine brake you're only braking 2 wheels of the unit which can cause you to slide more easily and jackknife so it's best to use the engine brake with some brake so the trailer wheels are also slowing

    Volvo offer a 750bhp i6 16L which is what you were in but they also offer a 540bhp i6 13L (fh13) which is the highest output engine you can spec with a dual clutch gearbox, that 540 will actually beat the 750 to 50mph from a standstill. Also that might be the most powerful electric hgv in production however back in the diesel regime scania offer a 770bhp 16L v8.
    There’s actually the possibility to push the engines a lot further if it wasn’t for cooling. Just like CAT engines there’s respective higher output marine versions of some models, where obviously cooling isn’t an issue with the room a available on boats.

    Trucks may not be as exciting as cars for obvious reasons but they command (and deservedly so) massive respect for the (automotive/mechanical) engineering challenge and marvel (if I may say so) that they are. Not to mention the value they add and how indispensable they are to society.

Higher energy density and capacity, much quicker charging, not volatile, lighter, cheaper, 100% recyclable. Applications like these should've been focused on first! it's not for longer distances it's for shorter daily drives and city transports. + europ has strickt laws on how long you can drive and when you need to take a brake. you have 4,5hours of drive time before you need to take a 45min brake (or you can split it and take a 15min brake during those 4,5hours and then only need 30min when you hit 4,5h) then you get another 4,5hours. you can get 1hour extra drive time if needed i belive 2x per week or something like that. but then you still need that 45min brake after 4,5h before you can do the last 1hour. like 9/10 times i have seen sleeper cabs they are just sleeper because why not. they rarely actually get used as such unless we talking the bigger FH which is used for longer distance transports. here in sweden it's up to 74tons and 25meters long. we also got trucks with special permits that do 100ton hauls of logs. road train in other words

      its supposed to be a short distance delivery vehicle. in europe we daily drive trucks arround 800km a day or 500 miles. and they usually carry bigger fuel tanks. like a weeks worth of fuel. arround 1250liters normaly wich would usually get you over 2000miles or 3200km on a full load

    Electric is definitely good for inter county deliveries for many logistic companies but the Non-electric is seriously good for continental deliveries. nice to see Volvo is taking the electric challenge. Tesla should not be the only one in electric truck industry.

    • @rempanda
      @rempanda Před rokem +6

      DAF also have the electric CF range currently on the road which are similar in stats to the volvo here, and like volvo are releasing their big boys next year with the electric XF range on to the road.
      Lots of european truck manufactuers currently working on getting electric or biofuel trucks out on roads which is amazing. In america Freightliner are working on getting an electric cascadia on the road.
      Thankfully tesla isn't the only one doing it because they've never exactly been proven to be honest about their numbers and the semi is hideous, I know I wouldn't want to have to stare at that thing while stuck in traffic.
      Tesla are all about hype though and they've really hit on that marketing a big semi truck to lots of people that haven't driven a HGV in their life, have no plans to, aren't in the trucking industry and because they've only heard about tesla semis they're up on their high horses screeching about how tesla is changing the world. Meanwhile people that know about trucking know what's available, what's coming up and also knows that tesla will certainly sell some but they're not going to be taking over the trucking industry.
      As you said, electric isn't anywhere near ready to take on the long-haul market but in a lot of europe there's so many companies making round trips that are less than 100 miles and electric does go a long way to fill that role.

    • @shona5512
      @shona5512 Před rokem +1

      It'll be interesting to see how much the range of the electric trucks improve when we start seeing the effects of the overhead charging cables that are being trialed. They have a long way to go before they could ever compete with continental deliveries, but if an electric truck could do a hundred miles in and around the streets of London, not facing any emissions charges, then hop on the motorway and charge while driving until it gets to the next city.. It could be a viable option for logistic companies based in one country.
