  • The same machine and the same route as in the previous video, but after correcting over advanced ignition timing, excessive valve clearances [massive in the case of the exhaust valves] and raising the carburettor slide needle a notch, to get rid of a 'flat spot', giving this machine noticeably more all round 'go'.

    You can really see the difference your work has made, great machine, we are seeing more small capacity bikes in the market new, but do they have the effortless style of the 50’s and 60’s machines.

    Interesting. I had a similar hesitation problem with the 1961 3TA I owned many years ago (apparently she is still in existence somewhere). It was worse after the engine had warmed up and burnt off the extra fuel in the carb from tickling it. I tried changing needle positions and a host of other things including slides. It was diagnosed by Titch Allen as being due to air leakage between the slide and the body of the carb. I also tried a different carb but had no confidence in it because I think it was a non-original or reconditioned monobloc and the slide was a poor fit. You seem to have cured this one!

    It looks like the wildly fluctuating tach was touching 6K and that you were seeing 70mph plus on the motorway.

    The tank rack made my friend walk very strangely for 3 days after he rear ended a car in the late 70's.

    sounds much better. Ahh, the pleasure of English roads based on 17th century original tracks...and often, not much better that they were in the 17th century🙂 Potty, slippy, muddy and the occasional horse dealer not giving a toss!

    Paul, is there any difference in big, small end and main bearing dimensions between a Tiger 90, 100 and 110 ? I know that quite a lot of folk upsized the top end of their 90's with 100 barrels, but I have heard that 350cc is the optimal capacity for smoothness from a 360 degree twin. A now deceased pal had a Tiger 100 for many years, which never gave him any trouble, but he did buy a Norton Commando 750 afterwards, just for a change of scoot. It promptly caught fire ! You made a fine job of fettling this particular bike, it sounded really nice when ticking over after you arrived back home.

    My bsa rgs copy could not pull over 90 i believe it had a star twin head on a a10 bottom perhaps why
