  • Just a short ride on this machine after work was done to straighten a slightly buckled front wheel and floppy handlebar rubber mounts. Carburettor and timing issues were also put right and some basic servicing was carried out, including an oil change.

    Back in 1985 I bought a 79 t140d Bonneville special. It had been neglected and the engine was seized. All the top end off of it had the glaze broke in the cylinders and installed new rings. Put a set of large-diameter TT pipes on it she was loud and proud. Bike turned out to be Rock Solid. I rode that bike for over 5 years and it never gave me a problem.

    Brings back memories to me too, in 1981 I bought a brand new U.S.A. spec T140E Bonneville, it was black and candy apple red with gold pinstriping. I loved riding that machine, but in 1982 I saw a T160V Trident with the Norman Hyde 850 big bore kit for sale, I reluctantly traded the Bonnie in against the Trident, the triple was the best handling motorcycle that I've ever owned, it topped out at 135 mph and returned 35 mpg on 4-star fuel.

    you made me jealous, I am currently working on my 1979 Bonneville and haven't ridden it for almost 2 years, currently awaiting a parts order. obviously you know the roads you are on as you prepare for the bends before they are seen, I do not envy you on the wet roads, I used to live in the UK and my mode of transport was a 1971 Tiger 100ss not so much fun in the rain and snow, I now live in Arizona in the good old U S of A and 99.9% of the time its dry and great for riding.

    Many times just before I put the bike upon the stand I like to do all the way locked "tight" steering in both directs doing figure eights. It allows me to check test my balance to the bike also I can make real sense of the bike as to how well the featured controls are working. Checking if idle sucks at final low gearing and if throttle response is too sloppy or binds. Love these machines!

    Hello Paul. Great bike videos. My beloved T140E is also in Wales but unfortunately all wrapped up in my garage while I am working in Japan. Love the sound of the bike and the images of Welsh country roads. Miss it all! Now I know who to contact when I need expert repairs :-)

    Looks like a T140D Special gas tank, the USA T140E with the rear brakes mounted on top indicates a 1980 model year. Also came with 85 MPH Veglia gauges. Mine has a decal on the rear fender that says “ Machine of the Year “

    I had two new T140E's, one in 1978 and one in 1982. Lovely bikes, dont remember them sounding this bad. I'm sure you'll get this one sorted, it looks good.

      It actually sounded very good, but the camera mic doesn't do the sound of any bike much justice.

      @@shoshone3 ...I am very disappointed with the bread bin tank in the 79s. Was supposed to carry more gasoline but the petcocks cannot take it! lots of gasoline stay there in these stupid tanks; I see that there are no problem with the rounded US tanks. I think the factory moved the petcocks in the later models, so I do not know if early 70s bread bins delivery all the gasoline or are the same.

    Keeping track of what gear you are in for the moment is my interest viewing considering the type road you on. How much and where you control to be in the power range of the machine. I find myself trying different points of shifting sometimes exploring sometimes just being in a mood. Thanks!

    It's an "E" with a "D" tank and seat added.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před rokem

      I was led to believe it came like this from new and was a U.S. spec machine, but perhaps that is incorrect, I don't know. It only had about 8000 miles on it, as I recall.

    • @FunAllDayLong4353
      @FunAllDayLong4353 Před rokem +1

      @@paulhenshaw4514 It's definitely an "E" model judging from the side panels, but it has a "D" slightly stepped seat and "D" tank decoration. The E export tank was the classical scalloped design used throughout the seventies usually Black with silver scallops or Black with red scallops. Do a search for "Triumph Bonneville D Special 1979 " to see the seat and tank.

      @@shirleyboy8859 Thank you - and fair comment about the mic, I guess. It is very good at picking up 'pinking' in engines, though! I tried sticking tape over the mic some years ago and that improved it no end, but my camera is very basic, as you can see here ... czcams.com/video/okExHYdMEs4/video.html

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Sorry I didn`t mean to upset you.. I just saw a very beautiful bike and wanted to wallow in the sound and feeling of the ride... I watch videos like this and lean with the bike... It is a fine machine, I just wish I could afford one... A while ago I almost bought a box of bits... It turned out to be a Norton Commando!!! But at the time I had nowhere to put it!!! I have had a few bikes including 2 CB 750`s :-))))
