      He's pretty disconnected from it tbh; Jimmy focuses a lot on trans and gay people, which is easy for him to shrug off as he is neither (at least publicly, which still makes it easier even then).
      For my part though, I would not sit idly by and be made a joke by a balding old man with lungs like an old paper bag. It isn't the job of minorities to put up with that, so it's good these two are the ones dealing with it instead.

    • @Acoto
      @Acoto Před 2 lety +193

      @@reaganeidemiller7132 You're thinking about it too combatively. In my opinion there is no "job of minorities", we just made that idea up, as there is also no "job of the majority", because everybody is a minority or majority based on the set of characteristics you define. For example, a "balding old man with lungs like an old paper bag" from Philly as you wrote makes him a minority compared to the entire US if your criteria are those characteristics.
      The solution then is to approach people as individuals, challenge their ideas with other ones respectfully, and both give and take suggestions for everyone to consider.

    • @aestos8673
      @aestos8673 Před 2 lety +421

      @@OmegaF77 David's introduction was a shit show and I am willing to bet he regrets it. By the end of the show it seemed as though they were two people from vastly different walks of life able to just have a talk. But Jimmy comes across as wise and whimsical because he was able to have a conversation with someone that he did not see as an adversary and that person brought the best out of him through extremely careful and paced dialogue. It also seems like he does not necessarily offer the best of himself to those he sees as adversaries with making fun of gay and trans and calling people the n-word as he openly admitted. Feels like both have room to grow and that over time both have grown from their now years old relationship. With that said, the fact that you could watch this in it's entirety and pick one person to be a good guy and one to be a bad guy speaks more about you and how you view everything. David only arranged this conversation because it seemed like it could be positive for everyone involved and maybe shed some light for both sides on why people feel the need to chose a side and stick with it even when it is imperfect. But hey, I'm just a dude on the internet that hopes everyone will put away the swords one day and realize that no matter how you feel politically we are all just people trying to get by.

    • @centran
      @centran Před 2 lety +66

      I think a lot of people think this is staged. I'm not a therapist so maybe I don't realize it happens a lot but how often do mental health and personality traits boil down to one specific root cause. Things aren't like the movie or TV shows where you can point to one specific thing for cause and effect. These types of things can be very nuanced and build on top of each other.
      I could be wrong about Jimmy but it seems like a lot of how he acts can be attributed to a very direct, precise, past life event. I don't believe, for most people, it's that simple. So when things line up almost perfectly it seems suspicious.

    I've never watched David's show, but I was extremely disappointed with the way he introduced Jimmy. Dr. K, you highlighted the nature of that initial characterizarion perfectly. I would've tried, but your patience is definitely greater than mine. I wouldn't say I have right wing politics, but that intro, that basically said "Here comes the wild criminal" is what pushed me away from the left. It's as if many left-leaning folks are scared to empathize with people like Jimmy to begin with, because it's bad for your brand to be associated with anything remotely "right wing." That is fear, and it gets us nowhere. Thank you for having the courage to relate to what Jimmy was saying, Dr. K. A lot of it resonated with me, specifically, our caregivers just doing the best they could, often unable to navigate negative emotions, especially in men. I experienced a lot of that growing up and built some pretty thick walls of my own. This gave me a ton of insight into my relationship with my mother and was a good reminder to continue to move closer to her, despite the resentment I've been slowly chipping away at. Thank you, Jimmy. Much Love.

    This was an amazing lesson in listening and understanding. Jimmy reminds me a lot of my dad, I think if my dad hadn’t found my mom and cooled off a little his life would have gone in much the same way, and this conversation just really improved my understanding of how someone with a tough childhood carries that trauma forward.

      Whats amazing to me is how there's only a minor dichotomy between far left and far right people. I think alot of the issue with the political climate is the victim mentality caused by childhood and early adulthood trauma. The difference is the left tends to internalize that mentality, while the right externalizes it.

      I do think a good woman can help a man be happier. I'm glad for your parents. Jimmy is tough, but I think he longs for that innocent kid before he became tough. When Jimmy explained how he was happy and skipped around, then he got bullied for it, he accepted it was inevitable. .He understands the world he grew up in. Also, the doctor asked him what it would mean to him if he ever really was a victim. Jimmy said, "I don't know because I don't behave like a victim. If somebody wrongs me I get back at them... And I generally make it funny and spectacular. It's just what I do." Wow! That is an understanding of himself. I think people might have missed how much confidence Jimmy has in himself. He did say forgiveness has to come with an atonement, you can't just say it was okay they hurt you. He isn't a wimp. BUT, he misses that noncynical, happy innocent kid that he was. And I think that kid is important to him. I also think Jimmy is super smart. I just wish he could see the world isn't wimps and strongmen. It's people who have their own kid inside they also live with.

    As a right winger, I'm actually really glad he was willing to step across the aisle and actually listen to someone he disagrees with, instead of modern political discourse, which is just a bunch of reactionary nonsense (and yes, I mean that on both sides. Most people do it nowadays- I try not to)
    I don't like to prejudge people on the internet (or irl) based on what I find in their political beliefs- although my brain automatically sees their online bio and goes 'yep, definitely left wing' or 'yep, definitely right wing'- I always try to be willing to reach out and make friends. Sadly, I don't see a lot of that from the other side (i leave political indicators out of my bios usually), and I also don't see it incredibly often from my own side, so it always brightens my day to see someone genuinely engage in conversation with someone from another political belief. This is what America was built on- respectful debating and chatting about politics- not the identity politics, and not the reactionary politics and disrespect I see all the time nowadays.

      I’m some ways it’s hard to tell if by change we mean to persuade to our beliefs, and we are trying too hard to that end with this whole “beyond saving” talk. Not everyone is going to fit your mold, and Jimmy if anything is a great example, he is tired of being shoved into a mold, he stands up, and he snaps back.
      There are multiple sides to things, and it is important that his concerns are heard as well. We are all flawed, we all have different backgrounds and biases, and it’s ok. It takes opening up on both sides to agree on something, anything at all, we can’t just focus on Jimmy, we must look inward as well.
      You build a footing with common ground, but don’t set out with a goal of knowing your right and you are here to conquer, no wonder people put up walls and lash back out. Take that precious common ground and build upon it, expand it, and do so without a selfish intent.

    I feel like if this guy spent about 5 minutes on self reflection, a lot could change. The fact that he said he didn’t like being made fun of, but then also said he was glad it happened so he could come back with witty comebacks was astounding. Like, they molded you in to what they wanted you to be by making fun of you, they destroyed something unique about you. And instead of realizing how bad that made him feel and deciding not to do it to other people, he just continued the cycle. Hurt people hurt people.

    • @illusionofquality979
      @illusionofquality979 Před rokem +73

      He would need more than 5 minutes.
      From his story is sounds like he was all alone so he coped by adapting. He couldn't skip? So he stopped skipping. He was send away by his mother? He guilt tripped her for a bit but says that later in life he finds her decision justifiable. He was throw away to some boys house to get fixed? He tried to have fun and make friends since day one. And I wouldn't be surprised if those friends were users aka bad influence too.
      In a way he is still doing it in his adult life. He mocks minorities, who react to him negatively while the other side of the extreme supports him and finds him hilarious.
      How can anyone change if all their live the same pattern happens? And if he tried to change now and show "weakness", he probably feels like he would be eaten alive since the loudest people are the least forgiving. And I mean it on both sides. The one extreme would call him a snowflake while the other would say he is lying and should pay for his actions while never accepting him.
      Change is hard, especially in the era of the internet. Everyone can look up what you said and even if you delete it, someone probably screenshot it. It's very hard for anyone to even think of turning a new leaf because the past will always come to haunt you. Especially when people are not charitable and misrepresent your actions while removing most of the context.
      The way the other guy introduced Jimmy was pretty cold-hearted. This is probably why when Dr K was asking his question Jimmy was defensive for the first 30 minutes or so.

Most of my career was in San Francisco, but a few years at the end were in a rural area of the northwest. The scale of rural poverty and hopelessness far outpaces that of my urban clients. Therapists are trying their best to prevent the conversation from going on a tangent because the person who is going through the therapy desperately wants to avoid the topics or thoughts that would help them overcome their issues. So I have a lot of respect for therapists who stuck it out in a bid to help their patients.
