    So here's the thing: our place is a mess for this month and so I had to leave out four shelves because they were just too hard to shoot and light right now. Perhaps I'll revisit that if folks like this type of thing!

    One of the things I love most about your Chanel is your selection of books. I like that you have so many different comics. As someone who appreciates the big two but fatigues easily of them, I find your channel so refreshing. Thanks for the amazing presence you bring to comic book CZcams. I would say just put the love and rockets first 50 in order and the rest of the order is fine ;)

    This is absolutely not advice but personally I love to place stuff in the order in which I read it. Often when I read something, especially longer series, I look back on that story and remember what my life was like when I was reading it. Like the room I was in, the job I was working, how much has changed since then. Putting things in the order they came into my life in makes each story feel like it defines its own little era, like "Oh, that was the time in my life that I was reading that story."

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 měsíci +1

      The autobiographical order! As mentioned in High Fidelity and elsewhere in the comments.
      Author and size will often be the big determining factors, but i would love to arrange as many different ways as possible, different logic for different sections!

    This reminds me of the movie/book 'High Fidelity', in which the protagonist is asked how he's arranged his albums. His approach isn't alphabetical or categorical, but rather autobiographical. Although that is probably completely out of the question, I do love his explanation. For each record he has to think about when he got it and what he was going through at that time. Probably a difficult way to find anything, but a great way to reflect on your life and how it relates to your collection :).

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 měsíci +1

    Wow this was an amazing tour. I typically try to keep books by the same author or series together. For series I try to go by the order in which the series was published where ever applicable. Boxed sets at times though pose a challenge where they don't follow the chronology , fantagraphics Carl barks library is such a case at hand 😂. However my collection is tiny compared to what you have though. I m mostly into Franco Belgian comics, Disney comics and bit of old Americn classics like Russ Manning, Alex Raymond etc.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 měsíci +2

      As the books on the shelves multiply and change and evolve all systems also change (or become untenable).
      With comics, it is much worse than prose. Artists and writers collaborate, work on different series, with different publishers, and have their works come out in multiple formats. Even a single creator, say Chris Ware, can have books ranging from slim issues to boxes, so it's all a lost cause 🤣

      @@ftloc very true. Tintin only had 24 books but then , every now and then something interesting keeps coming even though Herge is no more around. Like entropy of the universe tends to increase perhaps all our systems on arranging books are destined to fail anyways 😀

    I moved to the county where my wife was from and as part of the deal, all my comics came with me. We have been in our home for nearly two years, but all my comics were sitting in my brothers-in-law spare storage room. Now the youngest kid is 2 we are starting to get around to doing a bit to the house. My comic collection made the long trip from 2 fields over and is now sitting on the “office” floor. I was promised a man cave, but a few new bookshelves will do.
    Now that my wife sees the collection daily it causes her to make some of the following statements “you won’t be buying anymore comics will you?”, “You don’t need all of them?” and the worse comment of the lot “how about you pick your favourites for this bookshelf and the rest can go to the second-hand store” it’s taking her a few weeks to come around to the fact that they are staying. I can honestly say that she would leave me if I had the collection you have.
    It’s the first time in nearly 20 years I’ve been living in the same house with my collection and just being able to see them it’s like getting a big hug every day!!!! I’ve loosely organised into either the artist or author, for example I have a lot of Ed Brubaker image stuff right next his captain America run. But then for all my X-men book I just group them together. It’s handy with writer artist like Geoff Darrow as they stick together.
    I think that’s a part of the interest also isn’t it, letting your bookshelves change an adapt to how you feel like presenting them at different moments.
    You have so many books though so organizing it could be a losing battle and best to view your collection like a living organism that needs to be feed more comics.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 měsíci

      What a lovely ode to our little libraries and the evolving companionship they provide!

      Let me know if you ever need me to write to your wife in support of your efforts.

    Maybe you've been asked this before... And I'm not even sure it's appropriate to ask. But I'm curious to know how much you've spent on this humongous collection till date.
    I know it's going to be difficult unless you have kept a meticulous record. But it would really help to know how much money one would have to spend to own such a splendid collection.
    Even a rough figure would do... Thank you for doing this. You're an inspiration.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Very astute of you to think it's an impossible task, because it is! 😁
      It's not an inappropriate question, it's very common, but in general it comes from people just starting to buy books or who have not yet, because they see the end result. In truth, it is a slow, gradual, one at a time accretion, automatic, often accidental. In many ways it's like asking me how much money I've spent on food or drink in my life.
      But practically speaking, it's also impossible to tally because you buy books on sale, or auction, at varying prices. You buy in lots, or pay in installments maybe. You get gifts. You sell off some books.
      What I can say is I mainly started buying comics when I got a job (was too broke as a student for expensive comics, I borrowed at that time) , I've had a job for 19 years, and i budgeted approximately 10 to 20 percent of my disposable income every month for comics.
      So combining proportion with time and regularity, you end up with something that has a value not really measured in money any more, at least for me.
      I hope this rambling answer helps a little 😁

    For context I'm (kinda) a librarian still, so please understand I have natural deeply embedded reactions to some of this stuff.To be clear as my career has progressed and I've moved more and more away from 'traditional' librarianship I've relaxed and kinda roll with folks - and indeed myself - organising their collections as they see fit.
    I mean if it works for you it works for you, who am I to care.
    But for the love of Dewey if you have a series of the same title have them run in consistent numerical sequences - some are mixed, some ascend (as you'd expect) so 1, 2, 3... some seem to descend ...3, 2, 1 some were just all higgledy piggledy and it made me want to weep...
    ...breath Colin, breath... its okay... its all good... it doesn't matter...
    just breath and breath out....
    Ahem - I have to say it a beautiful collection... I mean that aside... beautiful....
    If you like I could just pop round and sort some bits out... I could...

      This comment was trapped in the 'For Review tab and I only saw/freed it now! And this has to be one of the funniest things I've read in a while!
      I laugh as I laugh in the face of Dewey! 😁
      But honestly, as long as I know where they are, I don't see why volumes of a series *have* to be in order. I register them on the shelf simultaneously, and grabbing the one I need is no harder than any order when all volumes numbers are visible. Now a continuous image like on the Love and Rockets box being messed with? That I can completely understand and I have taken a librarian's hand to rectifying that already! 😁
      But I do think for some the wilder garden appeals a little bit more than the manicured and all that!

      Oh sure the numbers were all there...but does that make it right, does it... am I getting carried away with this... do I need to let it go...

    Come on now… you can’t give us that sneak peek at the Lego shelf and then not show us the rest of the collection… it looks like you lean towards Castle. Is there a Classic Space shelf too?

      Haha AFOLs unite! I've had to stop with the Lego as there really is no room to even store anything, let alone display.
      But you're right - Castle, Kingdom and medieval ones were my favourite. Also, minifigures in general and a bit of city.
      Alas no space outside of a few minifigs.
      I've kept non comics interests (Lego, board games, video production) out of videos on this channel for fear of muddying the waters for new viewers, but plan on doing more about them on our Patreon. Not enough material or expertise for a second channel 🤣

      @@ftloc well the Lego tease was a nice Easter egg! Appreciate all the effort you put into these videos and the passion you have for the subject, it comes through in the final product, and it's why i keep coming back.

    4:25 : Alec by Eddie Campbell I am thrilled you have this in your collection I don't want to include and spoilers for the non initiated but only say this essential volume provides "an artists life" autobiography of life's trials and tribulations and also WHY FROM HELL is Alan' Moore and Eddies finest hour 1k better than Watchmen ( not Swamp Thing ) , to laugh there exists a color edition of From Hell I simply refuse to acknowledge its existence the only analogy I have is trying to watch a new colorized version of 1933's King Kong .

    5:20- Green River Killer graphic novel - hands down the worst most overpriced in the serial killer genre I mean with giant explosive titles like My Friend Dahlmer or Brian Micheal Bendis Torso focusing on Eliot Ness's search in Cleveland. These titles in mind the genre NEEDS MORE SERIAL KILLERS stories - John Wayne Gacy Richard Ramirez the Night Stalker Ted Bundy Henry Lee Lucas Sam Berkowitz , Joseph Christopher ,22 Calibre Killer the market appetite is unlimited I can't understand why they're letting this chance slip them by ?

    It's impossible for me to offer any suggestions because you're the quintessential comics guru - that being said I'm sure the time difference in India is problematic with live streams with other CZcams channels I would love to see some collaborations but honestly there may be growing pains along the way you would risk blowing them out of the water the GOOD THING is you can branch off with manga ( didn't know you were immersed but why and I not surprised ?) and other content creators you have unlimited growth potential but are a busy professional and don't want to dive into CZcams full time . I love all the Drawn and Quarterly and Fantagraphics titles honestly if it were not for them and manga publishers I would get bogged down with the sterile putrid endless loop repeats of Marvel and DC extinct superhero tropes. Heads up Chris Ware has a three volume hardcover slipcased set of his Acme Novelty books being released from D&Q Montreal Canada publishers on 10/29/24. Chris Ware vs Daniel Clowes ? Why even bother they're both comic gods who provide readers with a Buddhism centric creative vision of The Four Noble Truths.

      Thank you so much for your ever kind and ever excessive praise!
      I'd love to collaborate more, just need to settle down into a new schedule and setup to accomodate the time zone stuff you highlight!
      Re: Ware, it's the third Acme Datebook that's coming out, and I have the first two. Interestingly, they are also bringing out just the box for people like me! 😁
