I hate that this sounds like someone who full-heartedly backs major media outlets, but honestly this is the only political media I can listen to and trust. This kind of piece is precisely why I personally call you one of my most important influences. I dropped out of journalism over a decade ago because lecturers I respected assured us all that social media would require every journalist who staunchly believed in ethics and the public interest to be a fighter; to love the taste of blood; and frankly I didn't. I deeply respect the fact that you are one such fighter. Following your work has felt like an inoculation against the epidemic of confusion which the media has sown more recently and there is no doubt it has had a genuine positive impact upon my mental health. Enormously grateful.
The main problem is that there are no laws against this comingling. Even assuming everything is above-board, it's just good business to hire someone who knows how politics works from the inside, or someone that knows how to speak/write/ be persuasive.
Even worse the same thing additionally happens in the finance sector. Where regulators receive great “opportunities” at the big players after not doing a proper job regulating the market participants.
The biggest issue I see in the US politics is the sheer division between red and blue. Every year it seems there is less of a middle ground and you must be set on one side or the other. I think one of the biggest contributors is that algorithms like Facebook and CZcams promote media, views and people that will agree with peoples pre-existing views and likes. It then results in people self affirming their own views because 99% of the content they are promoted agrees with their own existing beliefs. And then when they are presented with a conflicting view it often just results in arguments that become ad hominem and people just dig deeper down and refuse to self evaluate their views and refuse to try understand the other person's reasons for their belief. Issue with Republicans and Democrats both.

It used to be frowned upon in the industry for journalists to become spokesmen for politicians - I used to study journalism where I was taught this. Nowadays 'speaking truth to power' is eagerly exchanged for 'speaking power'. Reporters are excited to be in the center of power, instead of being disgusted by this. Probably them going to the same schools as their political counterparts adds to this. I've known this for a long time, but after hearing this I still need a shower to get the smell off.
