I went to this game and then was flying from New Orleans to Boston the next day. The referee, Bob McElwee, was in the terminal pacing furiously back and forth and repeatedly justifying his judgments to his travel companion, whom I assume was another official. Of note, McElwee's pleats deeply complimented his wide hips. Also of note, McElwee is a great person, having started a charity called Renew, an inner-city non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing for the poor in Camden, New Jersey
Warren Moon Oilers the best super techmo Bowl team. I went to this game, did not know what to expect without Bobby Hebert their anymore. Well after this game I thought we were going to the Super Bowl, I know just the first game of the season. We went 5-0 and ended the season 8-8, this was the start of 13 straight terrible years till the Payton-Brees era. I hoped when Houston got their team back they would be the Oilers again.
*6 2/3 terrible years. You're quick to forget our miraculous 7-game improvement to 10-6 in 2000 when we got our first playoff win ever and also just our second division title. Haslett was a soft-ass player's coach but we at least only had one truly shitty season under him and that was thanks to Katrina. If you wanna split hairs, you could maybe say two bad years since we had to win 4 in a row to save his job the season before that when we went 8-8.
The Duncan catch at the 2:46:00 mark of this video is THE PLAY that I remember from my childhood. I remember watching this game and I don't remember much else about it, but that catch amazed me as a child and I still think it's incredible. I don't think I've seen a catch like that since then. It's lost to history because it wasn't a touchdown, didn't change the game, and no one else in history but Houston Oilers fans will remember Curtis Duncan, but man, that was a good one. Also, I had no idea, no memory that it was Cody Carlson that threw it. I always assumed it was Moon to Duncan.
I remember thinking during this game that the Oilers were going to have a great year, putting that horrid playoff loss from January of '93 behind them. Well, they had a great year (only to get promptly knocked out of the playoffs), but those first few weeks weren't pretty. They went 1-4, before an 11-game win streak.
@@joemamma137 It was a great year until the Buddy Ryan-Kevin Gilbride saga at the end of the regular season. I’ve always believed that had a lot to do with the team’s choking in a big home playoff game when they were clearly legit Super Bowl contenders that year. To have a top coach attempting to physically assault another on the sidelines during a game created a total circus atmosphere and they spent the next two weeks answering nonstop questions from the media. Oh, what could have been.
@@TravelinBand747 During that three year stretch, this was the only team to challenge Dal and SF’s stranglehold as the top two teams hands down. I say it was a terrible year because in the end, they accomplished absolutely nothing. I’ve always considered the KC loss to be the most soul crushing playoff loss in oilers history. And I know there’s considerable competition for that honor. They were the football version of the 94 Sonics.
@@joemamma137 Good points. The KC game for me was just confirmation that the team was snakebit/cursed/whatever…but was just destined to come up just short every time. That Buffalo game the year before was the single worst collapse in such a playoff game anyone has seen before or since. The defense totally fell asleep and the offense went ice cold.
0:19 was the reason why the Oilers always failed and didn't do anything this era. Jack Pardee. He may have been a nice guy and had a good record, but the guy was worthless and did nothing but stand there dumbfounded and clapping. These Houston teams had ridiculous talent on both sides of the ball and never amounted to anything.
I think it's cool to see the old commercials too. Takes me back.
I watch and love every single game of my oilers. Bless this account!!!
its a shame they are gone if they were still around i never would of been a cowboys fan
Jack Pardee scored four touchdowns in one football game at Polk High.
I have been looking for this game.
thanks for uploading this video! this was the first game i attended as a Saints season ticket holder.
I remember it well! They marched down the field 80 yds and a td. Then it all fell apart!
Rest in ☮️ Sam Mills.

This game made me sick to watch the Dome Patrol Hand it to my beloved Houston Oilers...😢

@@blakfloyd your right, but they all seem like bad seasons compared to the Brees-Payton era.

A great year? Maybe if you’re talking regular season. But in all, it was a terrible year.
