      @@johnsummerhill8323 but....but Marner is the reason why they definitely have cap issues this upcoming season with his contract. They would have much better cap flexibility if he were to agreed to a trade. He holds all the cards here so if he wanted to screw with the Leafs he definitely could. It's going to be a rough ride for him if at the start of the season he is in the Leafs starting lineup though.

      @@marconion What about Matthews? I think he would be easier to convince to move to an American team. He has a much bigger cap hit. And because he has term on his contract, the Leafs would get a team altering return in a trade. Being a UFA, no team is going to give close to equal value in a trade for Marner.

    • @marconion
      @marconion Před 5 dny +3

      @@johnsummerhill8323 Agree, no team is giving equal value for Marner. They will get pennies on the dollar for Marner. All teams know that the Leafs want him gone. Not a good place to be for the Leafs. The return could get better if it is a sign and trade though. As far as Matthews goes yes i agree he is a more attractive asset to other teams. Definitely possible though but they just extended him. He would definitely garner a huge return. I just can't see that happening though. Marner is the piece that needs to move whether it is for a low return or simply for cap space flexibility.

    I think the idea that the Flames won't trade with the Leafs because Brad Treliving quit has probably been overstated. I'm pretty sure, he is well aware of the odds of doing deals with Calgary so if he knew they wouldn't deal with him, I don't think he'd be trying. If he is, then he's stupider than I give him credit for which I just don't buy. Furthermore, in a hypothetical scenario, if the Leafs offered the Flames a "knock their socks off" deal then the Flames would be fools not to consider it.

  • @KyleMacSkill

    The only way the leafs imorove this year is if some rookies really step up. Knies needs to take a big step. Topi Niemela needs to come in and be a factor. And Fraser Minten or Easten Cowan needs to make the lineup and be a factor. And the only one of those that somewhat likely is knies becoming a 25-30 goal scorer

    The Leafs could not have traded for Calgary's goalie because Marner is on the team. They have to get that sorted out first. Extending Marner could be part of a sign and trade deal, so Marner can get an 8 year deal instead of 7 as a UFA. It’s the only bargained chip they have with the player. Think about it. Who’s going to trade FOR Marner a year out from UFA, without knowing they can extend him? If they can agree on a number times eight years, it could be an incentive to waive his NMC, to get an extra year guaranteed at his $12M+ asking price. He might waive his NMC for $12M extra.

    100% agree. This upcoming season the Leafs are actually in a bigger cap hell than the last season. What will help? Marner needs to agree to a trade or this could once again be the same old same old. Marner holds the dagger here and if he wanted to screw with the Leafs he definitely could do that. On the bright side though the 2025-26 season is looking promising with the Leafs having much better cap flexibility with many players coming off the books but........ they also currently do not have a #1,#2,#3 and #4 draft pick in the 2025 draft.

    Save some $$$ and go with a good tandem for Woll like Brossoit or Stolarz. Give Hildeby a chance! Juuse Saros would be great, but due to cap space this year can the Leafs afford him and still address the other open wound at the blue line.
