The further it goes into summer, the less chance Marner is moved. Teams are buying now and next week. Few will have the room to fit in a high salary cap as time goes by. Leafs must get this done. Having the Marner saga all next season is just not good for anyone.
100% you just said everything I was thinking. Also letting it play out over Summer will affect what Treliving does in free agency. I know they can operate over the cap. But if the Marner camp plays games, I can see Treliving Hesitate on making moves because of the uncertainty.

The smartest moves for MLSE will transpire as follows: Have Marner play out his contract and not resign him - it doesn't matter if they get nothing for him in a trade this year, his contract will be off the books, they would have paid him anyway. Players on their final year of expiring contracts play harder. Once Draisaitl is available end of next year they should put the best offer forward to acquire his superior PLAYOFFS services. The current highest paid player on the Leafs couldn't care less about winning in the playoffs - he's not going to risk injury, or sacrifice long term future pain to do whatever it takes to win, it also cuts into his down time back home in Arizona (chilling on the yacht with Bieber and his friends). 34 wouldn't sign for eight years because he wants to keep his options open, so four years is all he gave us. If the Leafs wimp out again in next years playoffs then get rid of Prima Donna Matthews and go after a player that will sacrifice his own well being to win. When McDavid comes available the following year it's incumbent on MLSE to bring him home - If Lebron can go home to Cleveland, McDavid can come home to Toronto - his career is finite, and too short, and don't tell me it can't or won't happen, the decision ultimately lies with Leon, & Connor. Who cares if Matthews scores 80 regular season goals. If he can't dominate in the playoffs we don't need him. He'll be more than happy to go play in La La land. Then take the 13.25M he's getting and use it to bring in McDavid for 16M. Of course those in charge of hockey operations only view 34 as a merchandise revenue generator for MLSE - they too don't care if the Leafs win in the playoffs - they'll still make their millions in salary, and don't have the balls, or are willing to follow through with what's best for building a playoff competitive team..Bowmanville Dave

The only way a trade happens is if Marner agrees to waive obviously & signs an extension with whatever team wants him. Absent that, Toronto will get absolutely nowhere near his value, so the likelihood of that happening is remote. He'll almost certainly be on the roster for this season imo & will be highly motivated as it's the last year of his contract.

He'll join O-Dog on a health revolution soon. Ironically, both played for Canes and they have one of the best in shape coach in all coaching history of any sports. Rod the Bod would put these two potato chips to shame if he took his shirt off.
Nick isn't taking any of that BS from Pagnotta. Everyone knows Marner is just a reg. season point champ. AND most of that is due to the Leafs not knowing how to play defensively so they need to win games 6-5, 5-4, 7-6, etc. Rather than the balanced/deep teams which can win any which way: 2-1, 1-0, 5-4.

Bert and Domi are great, yet Leafs can acquire just a little less talented and spend on a goalie and couple quality D.
I'm hearing, Chicago offering the number two pick overall as part of a large package for Marner and Vegas offering Theodore, Thompson and two 1st round draft picks. Marner is an Allstar, he does not come cheap. Players like him don't grow on trees so the Leafs are going BIG on this one. Marner will be the face of another Franchise.
There's no world where I can see them running this back with the core yet again. Their season ending presser will have meant nothing. Sure, they got a new coach. That's only part of the ongoing issue with the Leafs.

He's not going to OK CBJ - and IIRC, Werenski's had more than one nasty injury.

He didn't do it as much this past season but the years before he did it every time. He has an A on his jersey, an A he asked for, man up and go to the fucking box.

The culture in Toronto stinks - and I think the proof lies in how ineffective their interim leadership has been. Despite having brought in Boyle, Marleau, O'Reilly (and so on), they've won ONE round. Whether you endorse Mitch or not, this HAS to change - and he's the odd man out. If I'm Treliving, I retain JT this summer at a massive reduction. @@dbo3027he did block shots play well under Babs, but all of a sudden under Keefe he stopped. What I did notice was his game really fall off and then the ankle sprain when Willy re-upped. He saw his money go to him and he kind of knew he might not be able to extend in Toronto. Don't get me wrong, love seeing his highlight reel plays but the Leafs CANNOT pay 4 players next season $11 million+ and not a single one be a stud defenseman 9 goalie.
