- Fable is an amazing baby's first RPG with true charm and choices. Continuing our celebration of 20 years with Xbox, I wanted to return to this beloved classic and breakdown what makes it so special all these years later. The timing couldn't be better with Xbox dropping FPS boost for the remaster 'Fable Anniversary.'

Fable has one of the best soundtracks of any game, many good memories playing as the "chicken chaser"
Danny Elfman!
I always made my name arseface lol
@@ChaoticM3thod He was only responsible for the main theme, the bulk of the music was composed by the incredibly talented Russell Shaw.
Lmao I forgot about that
Genuinely one of my top 15 favorite games of all time. I have so many memories of my dad and I playing this game and watching him fight twin blade as a kid. Love this game so much
Me too!
Fable is the reason I went with Xbox over Playstation, the Fable 4 teaser was a YEAR ago... waiting for a update
I’m right there with you (10 months later)
One year later…
the new update looks terrible
Haven't played this since Lost Chapters came out on PC. Now that Anniversary is FPS boosted I can't wait to go back.
I’ve been replaying 2 recently and im a bit salty they didn’t fps boost it like 1 and 3.
Fable 1 really got me into gaming and RPG's as a whole
I loved and still love the fable games it was probably that first game I truly played start to finish on Xbox. The voice acting was great British actors that I had grown up with. Can't wait for playground games Fable 4.
It's awesome that you mention the Kotor influence with the morality system. Fable on the OG Xbox was my first game on that platform. After Fable I picked up Kotor because I read some article in an old gaming magazine about it and fell in love. Probably put 200 hours into it all thanks to Fable lmao
Lionhead Studios took morality and morphing from Black and white (2001), i don’t think they influenced from Kotor
Such good memories playing this. So ahead of it's time in terms of ideas. A charming game!
i play this game every couple of years and still is amazing every time
I absolutely love the fable franchise spent a lot of hours running around Albion and I can't wait to do it again in the new Fable. I miss Lionhead Studios they made some truly great games.
Love the channel matty
Dude, you breaking down the box art and the game mechanic info description was rad. Good job
i just love the whole concept of fable wheret you start as a kid and then the more u upgrade your skills your character actually ages and gets older till he becomes and old man by the end of the game. and how the heros appearance changes dynamically with the morality system but also with the skill upgrades like if you lvl up the bow/skill you get taller, if you lvl up strength you become more muscular etc. idk i feel like not enough games have dynamic character morphing and for 2004 i feel like that was really really cool the way they implemented that.
One of my favorite series of all time. I absolutely cannot wait to see what playground games can do.
Just started playing this again the other day.
Still a wonderful game , absolutely timeless
Ah Fable, "sip" that was a very good game. Fable is one of those franchises that really did not deserved to get put under the graveyard of dead Xbox Franchises the way it did and I am very glad it is coming back.
Fable II was best game however.
Amen
Fable was one of my favorite series as a kid it helped me through alot if hard times love your content man
Thanks for the upload! Such a good game..
This is good stuff Matty!
I can’t wait for Fable to return
Another game I missed out on. Cool presentation and review for this. Definitely looking forward to the new Fable. Cool video dude.
Ahhh fable. The first RPG I played
I remember buying 2 in 2010 when it was new. I loved it. Really need to finish this
I guess you could say, that Fable's choice system doesn't go beyond good and evil ;)
I just clicked on this after watching Matty's Anniversary version video. I didn't even know this was Matty.
man, I love Fable, I have all of the achievements on steam. your channel just showed up in my recommended, so I am looking through.
KOTOR is also my favorite game of all time. I like how it and Fable share those neat cosmetic changes that happen if you tend towards evil/the dark side, as you mentioned.
Recently replaying Fable 2 and 3 with my buddy. Love every second of it! Can’t wait for Playground Games iteration!
Its in my top 10 games of all time. Cant remember if it was 1 or 2 that after i finished it i just kept walking around doing more stuff and bought every property in every town.
This is probably one of the best retrospectives (i think that's the right term) of the original Fable I've seen. The problem I have with some positive videos about the original fable is that they tend to oversell the freedom of choices you have in the game, and makes it seem like the possibilities are truly infinite, which i'm afraid will give people who want to try the game a false view of what they're getting into. Whereas you made sure to point out that actually it's not infinite, but there is clever design which makes you feel like you have more choice than there is. I appreciate that alot.
The first game is one of my beloved childhood games although I love all 3 main fables, yes even the third.
Video games are never going to be the same as they were back then. Hopefully Fable 4 and the next elder scrolls will help remind us of them
just got bakc on the game on my 360 bringing back so many great memories
Love the fable series can’t wait for the new one
I miss instruction manuals 😔 some devs really put a lot of effort into making the manual a big part of the gaming experience.
I just bought an original xbox a week ago and I bought Fable tlc today so I can't wait until I can play it!
I enjoy this series as a person who missed a lot of old masterpiece.
So many hours poured into this game on xbox and 3 on pc , sadly 2 hasn't made the jump to pc and I never owned a 360. A lot of the hallmarks of the first game are what have greatly informed some of my other personal top 5 games like Kindgoms of Amalur: Reckoning and The Outer Worlds, definitely a touchstone and defining game for my personal play style.
Man I remember seeing this game way way back as a kid. I never had an Xbox but this one looked interesting. However the Xbox game I legit wanted so much I asked my dad for it even tho I had no Xbox (had to play at cousin's house) was Knights of the Old Republic. The amount of confusion and disappointment when we first tried it can't be overstated lol. We knew basic English and barely understood the mechanics in it, didn't like the gameplay at all though. We must've played like 2 hours stuck on the first ship before we forgot about it and sold it later on. I always thought I should've asked for Fable instead (or a PS2 game I could play). Thankfully I tried KOTOR way later as a teen on PC and loved it, as well as the sequel. Now only Fable remains as the one game I haven't touched at all
Is that a mass effect mouse if so where did you get it from it looks so nice
Great video. Is there any chance you can retro Suikoden series?!! Would absolutely love that and I bet a ton of other fans would too
Fable's changing to good or evil just reminds me of Black & White a game that also was made by the same studio Lionhead
You got a follow from me simply BC you said KOTOR was your favorite RPG. Hell yeah.
Ps, I miss the black and white good vs evil paths. It’s a “out dated” mechanic that is actually very fun. Trying to be as good or evil as possible is almost a mini game.
Let’s gooo
One of my all time favourite games... I have a faint memory of completing this game in around 3 hours?
I've got the anniversary edition for when I get another 360 xD
I love this game
Fable was fire back in the day 🔥 loved the harry potter but with swords vibes
I loved fable 2!!
Hour and hours spent on this game when I was younger having a family ect just being in the world of albion ❤
Matty, You should try to cover evolution worlds on the GameCube, really cool JRPG that i think deserves more love
Just got to love game pass having a amazing classic game like this.
i absolutely love that hoodie my god, you wouldn't happen remember where you bought it would you lol
Fable is so good!!
Absolutely loved Fable when it came out, but never really played The Lost Chapters. Your review gave me a huge case of the member berries and to my delight Fable Anniversary was on sale on Steam, so I scooped it up, downloaded it and jumped in. After putting some hours into the game I went to level up for the second time and the game crashed. Looked into it and realized that this is a common issue. Tried turning off vsync, but no luck. Not gonna lie, I am a little heartbroken.
My first "rpg" love this game
Favorite original Xbox game
Love this game on Steam, for it for 9.99 it's awesome, love it! Money well spent, good game.
I miss game manuals!!
My first RPG as a kid...good soup 👌
I have always seen Fable viewed as a black sheep in the RPG community. A lot of negative feedback for it's simplicity and how it doesn't go through with it's potential. I get it, the worst thing a product can have is potential. However, I think it's simplicity works to its benifit. Matt hit it right on the head when he said it's a great starter RPG. This is not Morrowind or Dragon Age, this is a simple RPG. You could argue that the lead developer tends to hype up these games as more than they really are and you would be absolutly correct (Fable 3 being the biggest offender), but if you wanted to get into RPGs, Fable is a perfect choice. They also have a lot of charm and personality, which is more than I can say for a lot of RPGs today.
5:42 so Fable took the idea from a game that came after? (Kotor2) and from a game released only 1 year away? (Kotor)
Two more years to go 😏
I want to hear your takes on KoTOR 1-2
Wait. Mr Matty is here
Having the world fully open is nice but it really doesn’t bother me as much when loading screens are only about 5 seconds or less now
Heads up to anyone who sees this: If you want Fable 2, get the Platinum Hits/GOTY version! I normally wouldn't touch that dirty silver plastic of a PH release, but Fable 2 is different. It comes with the DLC! Anyway, have a great day. Thanks Matty for the video!
One of my top 5 games beside legend of dragoon
I tried fable on my series x after the new update and it felt really jittery to me.
i still have the installer disc
More OG Xbox yes
I wish the fable gamse would come to the switch
Kinda doubt you'll reply to a year late comment, but who knows. What do you think of how original Fable handles summons? I always thought it was a super unique way to handle it. Having to have your current summon actually last hit something that's stronger- to in turn become that entity... What were your opinions on that system?
Is divinity 2 retro enough for you to talk about it.
Definitely hope this is their inspiration point at playground. Adored Jack of Blades as a villain and the armour and style of the original and anniversary. The villains just weren’t great in the sequels and I didn’t dig the outfits as much in them either. Was 100% not a fan of F3’s weapons 😂
Fable 3s weapons/spells were its biggest flaw imo.
I love this game, it has great atmosphere of adventure and fairytale. Anniversary looks depressing and dark compared to the original.
You want to replace the platinum hits silver case? Huh?
I still play fable years later.I got it for Christmas back in 2004 and the lost chapter a years later, both still work and have little to almost no scratches. Still my my #1 favorite game of all time. I don't own fable 2 or 3 I'm not a fan of them.
2 Things: 1) Coop was first introduced in Fable 2. 2) Fable 2 does not have FPS boost. I really hate that, as IMO, it is the best Fable game.
Be nice if it was available for nintendo switch
Fable 1 looks so much better graphically than number 2... A lot of assets in the second game do not look like they fit, not cartoony enough etc
I hate when they “thumbs you down” 😝
Chicken chaser
Do you chase chickens?
Don't look like much of a chicken chaser to me.
I have a feeling the new fable is gonna be heavily toned down in terms of violence and freedom to mess around with the npcs. Fable 1 is my favorite game of all time next to kotor, I just wish it had more content 😭
You are wrong, Fable released 17 years ago, not 16
Have you ever learned to read? TLC released 16 years ago, so you are wrong
@@bjrsherino7085 he changed the title, it said only Fable 🤦🏻 I bet he didn’t even know TLC was a re release
@@Balverine Yes, i know.
The "set" for Retro Rebound really needs an upgrade. The silk sheet makes it look low quality.
Fable 4 needs to hurry up lol this and saints row are the series i miss the most. Sr1 2 and kinda 3 not 4 lol idk why that game needed to happen but never again please
Fable 2 had co op also not just 3. Also play TLC or the original fable 1 not the anniversary it kinda sucks compared to the originals art style a lot of the characters look like plastic in anniversary. But if you can only play anniversary go for it.
Fable: The Lost Chapters was only released as a platinum hits version. Sorry to tell you that you won't be replacing that case.
Dude i miss booklets, i always remember how the morrowind map got me into making world maps for my stories
Fable The Lost Chapters is still the series peak, 2 & 3 were poor IMO. As a Brit, this is only title in the series which feels distinctly British, the sequels were Americanised facsimiles of such. I'm not a fan of the revised art style in Anniversary, I'd opt for TLC on PC over this.
I'm a bit salty fable 2 didn't get fps boost.
Frame pacing is weird in this one, seems laggy and is unfortunately unplayable for me
To my unending shame, I've never played none of the old Fable games in the mid 2000s as not being a big RPG gamer in college. Now I'm older and wiser with more time on my hands, I'll get this title asap.
