- Sonic Heroes was arguably the most requested game I hop into following my completion of Sonic Adventure 2. I happily obliged and I'm glad I did because when everything is clicking together, it's a really fun time... and more intense than Elden Ring.

Crazy that a non-Sonic fan understands how to appreciate this game more than most actual Sonic fans do 😂
If he likes it then he's an actual fan... Are you dense? Appreciating something doesn't mean you can't call it trash at times or point our flaws, think a little and grow before you comment next time.
@@bellebuster5057 What are you saying? Dude literally just started playing Sonic games and admits that he's never been into the franchise, and didn't even care for Adventure 1 or 2 that much. Plus nowadays the Sonic fan community says that Heroes was bad, so I'm saying that it's funny that someone who wasn't really into Sonic actually likes the game more than the Adventure games, but Sonic fans can't seem to appreciate it as much as him. And if you're commenting like that to someone that said nothing remotely offensive, you most definitely have some growing to do my friend. There was absolutely no need to come at me like that for no reason 😂
Hard to appreciate a broken and badly designed game. I hate it more than Sonic CD. Both are mid.

Personally have really fond memories of this one as it is the first proper Sonic game I played and I had a blast with it as a kid. It's definitely not the strongest game in the line-up in terms of smooth gameplay but it will always be a personal favourite of mine. Thanks for another great review Matty!
me too, did you ever get stuck on that skyrail stage? i remember some of the jumps being so buggy in this game it was a 50/50 chance if you got it or not lol
@@TheInfectiousCadaver I did lmao. It was an absolute pain in the ass, that and I remember Egg Fortress being pretty painful as well in that regard hahaha, I still kept attempting it all to no end as I was having such a fun time with it

@@ivythay4259 To each their own experience
I'm genuinely glad some people have fond memories of Heroes and enjoy it, but, if I'm gonna be honest, Heroes gameplay is just so boring to me and idk why
The Xbox and GameCube versions of Sonic Heroes are the best. The PS2 and PC versions are not so great. The PS2 version is the worst version, and sadly, more people bought the PS2 version. One mistake Sega made was not building Sonic Heroes from the PS2 ground up, as the PS2's hardware was weaker compared to the other systems. As for the PC version, Sega could have done a bit more better job with the PC port.
Heroes is on near mania tier. I loved it
going from Sonic hater to Shadow fanboy is the best redemption arc anyone can go through
The manual to this game was awesome. Character bio was a treat to read. I'll never get over Eggman being a proclaimed feminist.
Funny how there’s nothing backing that obscure piece of lore up in this game or any other in the series

I always felt like this game was misunderstood. It's just so gosh dang fun! How someone can deny that, I will never understand and that's okay.
I agreed. To me this game is the best adaptation from the 2D to 3D. The game is very well organized and has a lot of things to do to 100% (it even has a last challenge after doing all things). The soundtrack is amazing, the themes of the levels are the most creatives in the saga, the level design is super cool. The main problem of this game is the interaction between the player and the places. It can be a little buggy. However, the battle system is great because you have a fight character. There are places to run fast and great plataformer sequences. And it is one of the final Sonic games that let you have more than one route with a final route after playing them all, allowing you to use all characters. This is my favourite Sonic and I really love it.
Honestly because of age and controls, it seriously needs a remaster
@@blitz4506 YEAH! PLEASE!!
@@blitz4506 or someone can mod the game to not be so slippery ive been waiting for a mod like that
Your videos have really proven what I have thought for years. There is a Sonic game for everyone, and it's never going to be what you expect. Sonic does so many things differently from other platformers. Whether it be story, or gameplay. Sonic Team is always trying something new. Because of that we have games like Sonic Heroes, The Story Book games, And Boost games. But it's also why some people love a certain style of game over the other and feel it's the best stye for Sonic. But, I'm truly happy the series is really grabbing you and you've come across your favorite Sonic Game. I can't wait to see more from you about the series.
Definitely. My favorite is Sonic Forces
Sonic Heroes is a really nice game. That was my first game to play on GameCube. 100%'d it once. This game is aimed for newer fans who don't know about Sonic. Levels are designed well for each of the teams with different objectives. Controls are quite slippery when going too fast. Still a great title to relive!
BTW, that robot you mentioned for Team Dark: that's E-123 Omega. Gamma died in Sonic Adventure 1. Anyways, great video!
Did I say Gamma? I genuinely meant Omega, but Gamma lives on in my heart clearly LOL
@@retrorebound8887 Yep, you did in the video. However, very understandable. haha

Sonic Heroes is a GOOD template for the series in 3D give Sonic an arsenal of moves, present him with creative and vibrant environments reminiscent of his 2D days and give him the obstacles to face over c all with High Speed action. This is something I hope Frontiers can handle
Sonic Heroes was the first true Sonic game I ever owned. Got it in 2010 for the PS2. I was 7, turning 8 that year. I have so much nostalgia and so many fond memories of this game. Unfortunately, my disc doesn't function properly anymore (probably because I played it so much). I'm gonna replace it soon, but I still keep that broken disc and it's busted up case for the memories of a simpler time.

I approve of your profile pic.
@@THEonlyAEON gotta rep TDH
For me it wasn’t really worth buying or playing. I guess just to find out I hated it and have in my collection are still valid excuses.
Love this game to bits. Banger ost, great character interactions and some really fun gameplay once you know how to get around some of its' rougher parts. Chaining moves together as a speed character while quickly switching teammates here and there is so satisfying.
Can’t wait for that Shadow video lol, the edge in that game is hysterical
For the slippery stuff, stop touching the stick
For the slippery attacks don't use the stick and knuckles doesn't move. You have to move to go all over the place
I'm not gonna list anything more cause the major problem of this game is its counterintuitivity, but everything that feels bad has a solution and the solution is great but counterintuitive
One of my top 5 favorite Sonic game. This should really be remastered along with Shadow or just at least be ported.
Never played any of the "edge lord the hedgehog" games 🤔 but I have batocera running now so I might try them out 😂
Matty’s slow descent into the crusty Sonic fandom is truly terrifying.
He comes bearing light into the darkness.
This game is an underrated gem.
That would be Sonic R.
Thanks for making this video.
This game is my favourite Sonic game and so is Shadow The Hedgehog. Maybe it's the nostalgic 2006 kid in me (when I first got my PS2 and started playing these games) but these two games really stans out to me. Sonic Adventure 2 too. To this day I wish they give these three games a remaster or make a Sonic game that hits just as good as these three. To this day no Sonic or Sonic based game after these three gives me the same feeling of euphoria.
This game has its flaws, cheesy dialogue and questionable voice acting at times, it feels slippery as hell to play. But the game was so fun. The creativity with the levels, the different teams/characters and linking their stories. The dialogue is funny too. Vector calling Rouge a broad. It also introduced me to my fav character Espio :) I found out about the Knuckles and Chaotix stuff after playing this game. Love Chaotix.
This game is underrated. I still play it to this day my PCXS2 emulator. :) Again, thanks for making this video. Hope you make a Shadow The Hedgehog video too.
EH I’m not alone 😭 this game was the very first I got with my PS2 as well 😊
Cream was created for Heroes, but actually appeared in Advance 2 first due to it releasing first, I think its a real shame we never saw more of her as an actual playable character outside of this and 2 Advance games (and Battle), shes a perfect beginner character, tails' mobility with a ranged attack.
Sonic and the Black Knight was the last hurrah for good Sonic storytelling, though a lot of players don't know that cause they get to the fake out final boss and think the game is just over, maybe cause the controls are kinda jank but definitely playable unlike Secret Rings.
No lies detected. Still own and go back to Black Knight from time to time. Great story but admittedly inconsistent controls and my favorite character as well as voice portrayal of Sonic. Did end up getting good at the game after a while as well and score chasing became a lot of fun; balancing the basic attacks with homing chains and soul surge in addition to speed and platforming. Haven't reached that level in Secret Rings yet as pure motion control is a bit more tedious to master but I can still get my fair share of enjoyment from it.
Strangely. Secret rings is in my top 5 sonic games. I just love everything about it. Although I can admit the controls are atrocious
@@PotatoPL- if only you didn't have to buy better control
I love the game for the same reasons you do. Very fun and challenging in an almost strategic way, and the soundtrack is killer. Plus I just love how aesthetically happy the game is, it makes me smile. Happy you gave this game a shot, and I'm even happier that you enjoyed it!
I'm enjoying these videos so much. Seeing someone who didn't like the franchise just say "fine, fuck it, I'll play your stupid Sonic game" and then realising they actually really dig it, is just one of the best things to see.
I have a love/hate relationship with Heroes. It was one of my first Sonic games, and it was the first game I ever put over 24 hours into. But I've never gone back to fully beat it ever since, because I just don't enjoy how everybody controls in this game. I can only stomach so much of Heroes before I have to put it down.
Personally, I don't really feel like the franchise peaks again, post SA2, until Unleashed. And Unleashed is more or less it's own self-contained story, albeit a really nice one with some fantastic presentation.
Looking forward to your thoughts on Shadow. It's a really different vibe for a Sonic game, but its commitment to itself has aged pretty well, making it a worthwhile revisit from time to time.
My favourite Sonic game!! Just replayed it the last week on my GameCube!
I remember me and a friend playing through it together years ago. We could not for the life of us beat Bullet Station, we took turns and just could not do it. I eventually beat it one morning when he wasn't there, and I kid you not I literally ran to his house to tell him I was so excited lol. Then he came round and we played more of the game. Good times
Really liked this game. The gameplay with 3 different characters at once was fun. Really love the themes for everything team.
Played this growing up on somebody’s GameCube they brought over to my dads house, best Sonic game along with adventure 2.
I was so worried when I saw this!
But I am glad to hear you enjoyed Heroes!
A lot of childhood memories in this one for me, not as good as the Adventure games imo, but easily one of my favorites. And while it's light on story, what's there is pretty good (team battles aside) *especially* Dark and Chaotix and it really shines with the pre-level interactions
I think you'll be... interested in the story of Shadow the Hedgehog, though the game itself can be a bit much. 10 total playthroughs, just so you're prepared. And the paths are all non-canon, with the exception of the final story.
As for other Sonic games with great stories, the final story in Shadow is decent, but the real contenders (in terms of mainline games) are Unleashed, Black Knight and to a lesser extent Secret Rings.
Also, now that you have more of an appreciation for Shadow and his arc, I'd recommend looking at his story in 06 again. It's genuinely his best portrayal across all the games (except maybe Adventure 2)
06's story in general is actually really good.... outside of Sonic's which is the bulk of it...
Sonic just has very little to do with the plot and Elise is a nothing character and romance doesn't fit at all. (I made a comment on your 06 video discussing this further)
Shadow and Silver both highlight the great side of the overarching story 06 is going for though. Shadow's story especially being fantastic
I'm glad to hear you've had good impressions of the community!
I think the level of tribalism and sheer number of different opinions from people who like different aspects of the series have sort of tempered the fanbase into generally being more accepting of different opinions on the games in the franchise
Some people can be toxic, but it's a mostly unearned reputation from what I can see, and I'm glad that those few members aren't giving you too much trouble!
Looking forward to the next video!
My brother and I always sing “SONIC HEROES!” Whenever we get a chance when the subject of Sonic comes up, just so iconic, this was the only 3D sonic game ive ever played along with the Sega collection on the OG Xbox back in the day.
My favorite stage from this game is Team Sonic’s Egg Fleet stage
You gotta try Sonic Riders. The pinnacle of Sonic racing games. If Sonic Riders got a remake, team chaotix would be a great addition.
Literally, my most favorite Sonic game ever! This game hit me as a kid at the perfect time when It came out so many years ago. Superb, fond memories from a simpler time in life.
I was so much of a Shadow fan boy as a kid, I sanded my shoes so that they didn't have any grip as a kid. During P.E. they were so slippery that I could pretend to skate like shadow. ...God I was cool.
You were not alone there. 😁 Was foetunate to find some addidas shoes that looked very similiar to Shadow's. Wet floor in the school floor = skating
Heroes was a game made for a new generation of fans. Much in the same way the 2003 TMNT series was for tv. As known this was the first multiple platform Sonic game. It is flawed but I wouldn’t change anything about it
I love Sonic Heroes, It was my first Sonic game I ever played, played it on the Gamecube. It has it's bugs and other issues, (special Stages for me) but this game was so much fun. The Egg Fleet was easily my favorite level of the game especially at the start of the level where you can jump from Air ship to Air ship. As a kid I felt so cool doing this. Rail Canyon had it's issues with rail switching, but Jumping from a rail that was high up onto the lower sections of rails always had me a scared. I didn't know if I was going to hit the rail, or completely miss. The Egg Emperor might be my favorite boss in any sonic game. Had some great memories playing this I truly hope Sega can give us a remaster of this game, or even a remake.

Awesome to see a positive review of this game in 2022! I'm actually gonna be defending this game in a debate this weekend so this is encouraging to see
This game was the game to get me into Sonic back in the early 00's! It will always have a special place in my heart... Renting it from Movie Gallery (R.I.P) on a whim one weekend was one of the best choices I ever made. I know that sounds silly, but if not for this game? There are lifelong friends I would not have met having not been in the sonic fandom in the early aughts. I grew up in the hospital a lot, and they had a game room I visited often after surgery (Even in a body cast!), so Heroes was not my first Sonic game in truth. I first played Sonic 2 and Spinball (Maybe sonic 3?), and loved the "Adventures of Sonic" cartoon as a little kid. But it had been ages since I played a Sonic game by the time my folks rented Heroes for me. So many awesome memories! I loved the game so much we rented it like, 4 times before Mom caved and bought it. Not before getting me the Mega collection on GBA and Mega Collection + on PS2, since we couldn't find Heroes in stores yet. Heck, this game was responsible for me buying my first OST! I loved the music so much, I begged mom to get the soundtrack for me. I still have the CD too!
Hoping you find something to like in Shadow the Hedgehog whenever you get to play it. I know it isn't a brilliant game, but I still really love certain aspects of it and wish it would get a remaster/remake/sequel (it helps that Shadow is my favourite character in the franchise).
Pretty sure he will. I played shadow the hedgehog a few months ago for the first time, I was legit surprised how much I actually enjoyed it.
Love the video Matty, I too always forget the Bees name. What made me laugh is that you kept calling Omega Gamma. Keep it up with the videos I'm surprised you started playing sonic.
I think this game was my proper introduction to Sonic,
Growing up i was a huge Mario kid, and he was my favorite video game character of all time (still is btw). So my friends tell me about this sonic character who was better than mario, and i remember playing the genesis games and genuinely thinking they were boring, then one day i played this game at my neighbors house and had so much fun that i went "oh now i see why they like sonic so much" still remembered the game fondly until i played it again and it wasn't as good as i remembered.
love your thoughts and feels on this, didn't expect you to highlight a good side of "clamoring controls", your love for shadow is us all! Btw do you know there is a super hard mode if you get every A rank?
I really liked your main-channel (?) where I got all the hot news about mass effect LE and all kinds of KOTOR-stuff. But I never knew you had a retro channel, where you "remember the videogames" and talk about games I played when I was young. Love it. Thanks.
I love this game. The collision and controls can be annoying at times, but this sonic game compared to adventure 1 and 2 is just easier to take in. It's got a much simpler story, you aren't always changing characters, and there's only one gameplay style. You also don't miss much if you decide to play as one team vs another, as all teams go through the same levels, and even then, when playing as all the teams you get differences in the enemies and level design. The level themes themselves also remind me of classic sonic with how varied and creative they are.
Awesome video!! This CZcams channel rocks!!!
I LOVE this game. the mechanics, multi-player, character portails, soundtrack, level designer and creativity. kid me was LIVING
Team Dark has Omega
Gamma doesn't appear in this game, Omega was first introduced to Sonic Heroes and has been in a lot of Sonic games since, like Sonic Team Racing, a slight cameo in Forces, Dark Brotherhood, Sonic 06
I really like Omega he's a great member to Shadow's Team
in fact I'd say Shadow, Rouge and Omega in general makes a great team, but yeah Shadow's story is totally the best part of this game
This is honestly my fav Sonic game ever but it never seems to get that much love
Man i love your videos, im mexican, almost 25 and i identify alot with your oppinions and your passion for games, keep it up!!!!
I've played a lot of sonic games but this one stands out to me,it's one that I've grown up with since I was a kid and all the levels for team Sonic and the soundtrack that you hear just before you get to the main menu have been my main source of happiness, I mean the other teams were good but Shadow's team came very very close to being my other favourite besides Sonics mostly because of his backstory and he's a hedgehog like Sonic,my preferences based on teams in this game were purely with Sonic and Shadow's mostly because I grew up with them unlike the rest of the teams they were still quite a lot of fun to play with but Sonic and Shadow really were and still are my favourites

Despite me being a Sonic fan, I have not played most of his games. (Only the ones that interest me.) I've been got Sonic Heroes back in the year 2000's sure I was a little scared of it but an old friend of mine since middle school and high school had this game too he beating Team Rose for me so I stood up and beat the whole thing when I was a teenager and I enjoy Sonic Heroes ever since
Think you hit the nail on the head with this one.
Definitely agree that Adventure 2 was the peak of Sonic's storytelling and to my mind the only other that can come anywhere close to it is Unleashed (in a very different way, though -- Adventure 2 emphasizes the plot's twists and turns where Unleashed is all about presenting an epic journey, even when that comes at the expense of the plot).
Will say a couple things for Rail Canyon though -- it can be tough as nails but it feels amazing when you nail it, and it has one of the best music tracks in the entire series. :D
I'm pretty sure it was the first time I heard a seven-string guitar, too, and that definitely impacted my taste in the music that I listen to as well as influencing the music that I write to this day.
I was one of the testers on Sonic Heroes (mostly the GameCube version but I helped out on the PS2 and Xbox versions). Main part of my testing was the haunted house levels.

@@backloggedgamer9338 I obviously didn't work on the game, but from what I understand, the PS2 was the weakest console of that gen. Apparently Sony had this stupid requirement that if Sega didn't release the game on PS2, they wouldn't be able to publish any other games for the PS2, so the PS2 port of Heroes was rushed.
I just played the GameCube version of the game for the first time last year, and the jump in quality was crazy lol. Still love the PS2 port tho.

Sonic Battle (for the Gameboy Advance) has a really good story. It builds off of Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow has all his memories, and I think the game came out on the same day that Sonic Heroes did.
Sonic Battle is a fighting game where you collect new moves like Pokémon and befriend a robot with a dark backstory named Emeral.
