    On a day like today, October 17, 1981, one of the biggest rock bands in the world arrived in Puebla, however, a bad organization and the prevailing conditions of the time led Freddie Mercury and the band to never want to return to Mexico.
    The English band took a bitter drink with their visit to Puebla, due to an incident that, although not tragic, did not dwell well with the audience.
    It called into question the good behavior and education of some sectors of the audience.
    Watch along the video to find out what really happened and why everything went south!
    Here, we talk about tales of music that your school classes probably never covered. In here, you will find discussions about some of the world's greatest artists, stories about their personal life and the untold weird parts of their history!

    Let’s put an end to this, I am from Puebla and I went to the first concert held here, I was 13 year old, there were two concerts. All started to go south because authorities were not prepared to receive a crowd that big and there has never been a concert of this caliber in Puebla. Lines started outside the stadium a about 8:00 am for a concert that was to start at 8:00 pm, the Zaragoza stadium is nestled in a mountain and has access to it from only 3 sides with only one main main road for access so this was also a problem. People outside the stadium began drinking and partying from the get go and by noon the mood was gettin crazy. Real trouble started at around 5:00 pm when the alcohol level was at the peak, lines were huge and the organizers of the concert refused to open the doors of the venue, the crowd started yelling, pushing and shoving and banging on the doors, a few fans were crushed (not badly) but were taken out and sent to a nearby hospital, the whole place smelled like weed and the event that got the things going and the crowds really crazy was the sound check inside the stadium at around 6:00 - 6:30 pm, people that have been in line and drinking for 10 or more hours started banging the doors and a few minutes later one of those doors went down and the organizers decides to open them. Inside the stadium things cool down a little as people started to get in to place, but as the entrance was not as today’s concerts entrance are a lot of booze and drugs made there way inside too. I have to say also that there were very few police officers and private present so security was overwhelmed and almost all the security staff were around the stage to stop people from jumping the fence. The start of the concert was a little late and the crowd started to get anxious but nothing crazy except from a small group of people of about 40 that were really drunk and stoned, those were the people that in end cause a lot of problems. I was sitting midfield between the end of the stadium and the stage and everyone and everything was calm and all were having a good time. When the concert started everyone cool down a little and for the first few songs all was good. Then those drunk people started shouting and whistling and I could not understand what they wanted because I was far behind them. And then it came, some idiot threw a show to Freddy and a ruckus started because the people that were not drunk started to push those that were and wanted them to relax and let everyone enjoy the concert, some fights broke between groups and a lot of people started throwing what they could get their hands on, some of those objects made it to the stage, as I recall the group keep playing, and they look a little concerned and pissed of the finishing the concert and behave as professionals, the sombrero episode did not start a crowd rage on the contrary It let a little steam out and by the en of the concert things were cooled down and security was taking control of things. When Freddy say good by and the Taco thing came up, I am sure that 90% of those present did nor understand what he was talking about, I believe that the group is in no way responsible for what happened that day in Puebla, if someone is to blame is the organizers and the local authorities that were not prepared for an event of this size and magnitude, just to be fair, the next day concert was the opposite, organizers and local authorities learn the day’s before lessons and the second event happens without incidents and those present remember the second one as one of the best in their lives. As a 13 year old I remember that even a lot of things went wrong I had one of the best times of my life. I saw and smelled things that I have never seen but I did not care, all I wanted was to see my favorite group.

    @ZENOBlAmusic Před 3 lety +59

    The issues at this show had absolutely nothing to with Freddie wearing a sombrero. If you had done a little bit of research you would have understood this, there are actual accounts from people who were at the concert. The security guards took people's batteries from their cameras. Then they started to sell these batteries back to the people. The people in the audience was furious because of this, they thought it was the band that instructed the security guards to do this, to earn more money for themselves.
    Of course the band did not have an idea about what was happening, and crowed started throwing them with shoes and batteries.
    This certainly wasn't Queen's only rowdy show, they had shows where there were riots, or were Freddie was captured and pulled into the crowd. At Knebworth 1986 someone was stabbed to death in the crowd. Rock concerts could be very unstable during those times.

    You need to provide background to the story!! The Mexican people in charge of securing a venue did not get proper permits to begin with, so Queen’s Concert was held in a substandard venue. There was only ONE toilet for the band and their crew, without a door. Police searched everyone entering and confiscated ALL the batteries. Once inside, there were booths set up to sell back the audience their own batteries at exorbitant prices!! Many believed that Queen was behind this and taking the money. Finally, the crowd broke thru the gate and they just freely flowed in. At some point, elevated platforms collapsed and many people broke bones. Many were also drunk and therefore obnoxious and unruly. This was all on the first night of the Concert. The authorities and Mexican promoters also held Queen hostage afterwards in a basement until they signed a paper promising to come back for the 2nd nights Concert. John Deacon did not do well being cooped up there 🙁. Police made the entire audience exit thru ONE exit and BEAT people bloody if they jumped in line. The 2nd night went much better, thank goodness!! What a absolutely horrible experience for Queen and their audience of the 1st nights Concert.

      Hola Barbara, ignoro si estuvíste en el concierto del 17 de octubre, yo sí estuve ahí y lo que comentas es verdad, solo que lo de las plataformas las estás confundiendo con el incidente que sucedió en Moneterrey, una rampa se cayó y causó lesiones a algunas personas de consideración no grave, yo no recuerdo nada de esas plataformas elevadas en Puebla., Ahí fue un verdadero desastre, desde el comienzo, los zapatos, las botellas, tierra, grava, lo que hubiera, les fue arrojado al grupo. Esa teoría de que Freddie se puso el sombrero y entonces la gente se molestó, es una mentira...al menos yo que estuve muy cerca del escenario no puedo decir que fue asi, sin embargo, es una de esas locas teorías y cuentos que ha tomado trascendencia pero que yo NO apoyo de ninguna manera.. Hubo dos tipos que se subieron al escenario si mal no recuerdo y creo que los aventaron de regreso la seguridad del grupo. A Deacon le cayó en la cabeza una bolsa o calcetín con tierra, y a Brian en el solo de "Bohemian Rhapsody" recuerdo que le aventaron una media o bolsa con tierra a su guitarra y eso hizo que en las grabaciones se escuchara una desentonación. Fue un show que en el peor de los casos no trascendió a tragedia pero sí hubo gente herida, gente lastimada, muchisimos borrachos y drogados al por mayor, y tengo muchos más recuerdos...un saludo.

The crowd shouldn't have been drunk and the security guards were also in the wrong and Queen was stuck right in the middle of the disaster, Freddie wore the hat as a symbol of respect not to hate on the crowd why would they have a concert if they didn't like the people they were performing for, they wouldn't have. The issue wasn't the band but rather a miscommunication between the crowd and the security guards.

    Correction: In Venezuela there was five (5) shows scheduled, not three. Initially, concerts at the Poliedro de Caracas had been scheduled for September 1981, Friday the 25th, Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th, but due to excess of demand two more concerts were added on Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th. The first three shows were made, but former Venezuelan President Rómulo Betancourt died in New York on Monday the 28th, and for national mourning, the concerts for that day and Tuesday were cancelled. That's what really happened. Of course, thousands of fans cursed the government's decision...

    Whilst I don't blame Queen for the riot (they can start good riots when they are called for), Freddie not reading the room by wearing a Sombrero and insulting the audience by calling them Tacos certainly didn't help. Hot Space and that concert in Apartheid South Africa (in which they didn't donate money to local charities after performing in a blacklisted venue) further damaged their reputation. If it was today, they'd be dead for sure (as they would still be if not for people forgetting about those incidents).
    Suffice to say, they improved their rep with Live Aid, and the rest is history.
