- In this video, I go over how to prevent sublimation ghosting on fabric. This is a great sublimation tip for beginners and experienced crafters and business owners in the sublimation field!
I use this technique when I’m printing my light fabrics for my scrunchies, scrunchie wrist totes, my scrunchie key chains, as well as a bunch of other products that I make with my satin fabric.
I hope this sublimation tip helps you to get that perfect pressed image every time!

You are a genius!!!! This is the BEST tip we have ever gotten to prevent ghosting!
You are too kind! LOL I've been sublimating for a very long time and picked up tips and experienced a lot of trial and error through the years. :)
You saved my sanity! I've gone through almost a dozen tote bags using spray adhesive and heat tape, and every single one had ghosting! Your method is SO simple, and uses so much less tape and adhesive. Thank you so much!!!
Lol I’ve been there myself in my past years doing sublimation! I totally feel your pain! ☺️ I hope the technique worked for you! Let me know!
Very smart! Looking forward to trying this technique.
Hi Wilma! Thank you! Let me know when you try it and on what and whether it worked for you!
You are my HERO!!! I have been fighting with some garden flag and this did the trick. I still used spray to adhere the print to the flag, but your tape method saved me!!! Thank you so much!
Lol That is so great to hear!! ☺️ Thank you for letting me know!!
🤯 such a cool tip! I'll have to try that soon!
Great tip. It solved my problem. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Roxylexis! Oh, I’m so glad to hear that!! ☺️
Thank you so much for the tutorial!! I sub pillow covers & have tried everything on CZcams until I found your channel. It worked GREAT!! No more ghosting!!
Hi Leigh! Oh, you're welcome! I'm so happy to hear it worked for your pillow covers! :)
Oh my goodness! I love this and it worked! I wish I would have found this video sooner! Thank you so much! You've saved me from never ruining textiles again! :)
Hi Gina! That is awesome! 😃 I’m so glad it worked for you! Thank you for letting me know!
This totally worked for me, thank you for sharing!
Oh I’m so glad! Thank you for letting me know! ☺️
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! I was just about to give up until I tried your tip and it worked!!! I'm sending you a virtual hug. Lol.
LOL Thank you LeeAnn! I'm so happy the technique worked!! :)
Hi, I’m relatively new to sublimating & was having this ghosting problem. I am so happy I found your video because your method absolutely works! Thank you so much! You are a rock star!❤
Hi Debra! Thanks so much for letting me know that it worked for you!
Omg I’m definitely trying this! Thank you!
Hi Mayra! You're welcome. Let me know if it worked for your project. :)
Thank you , I’m going to be doing that for sure.
Hi Sue! Let me know if it worked on your project(s). :)
Wow that's so smart!!!!
Hi! Let me know if the technique worked for you! :)
Very usefull! T-y!
I will try this for sure! Hopefully it'll work for me as well 😊
Hi Yuliya! Yeah, let me know how it worked and what your sublimating on! ☺️I sublimate on that white satin all day long and it’s always worked for me!
You are brilliant!!! This worked. I modified it a little by just taping the transfer paper directly to the dover sheet. It was just a little faster and easier. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome tip!!!
Hi Angie! That is great to hear! Thanks so much for letting me know! :)
BUEN TRABAJO
Gracias
Hi there. Just saw this video--genius! Do you know if this would work to solve the shadowing problem on an heat press that has auto open?
Hi Taryn! I personally don't have an auto-open heat press but I would think the technique would work the same. I believe they spring up quick enough to make this technique work. If you have one, let me know if it worked for you!
This is great! Now to figure out how to prevent the same thing on a mug!?
I know right? The only thing I make sure of when doing a mug is to just make sure I tape it it well. I used to do full wrap mugs using an oven and heat resistant shrink wrap. Despite my best efforts, I would on occasion get white ghosting (hazy faint cloud), and text ghosting.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🖨️ *Preventing Sublimation Ghosting*
- Understanding what sublimation ghosting is.
- Demonstrating the issue with lighter fabrics and black outlines.
- Introducing the method to prevent ghosting using heat transfer tape differently.
01:10 🛠️ *Utilizing Heat Transfer Tape Properly*
- Properly positioning heat transfer tape to prevent ghosting.
- Creating a "sandwich" with heat transfer tape to ensure even heat distribution.
- Emphasizing the importance of avoiding tape contact with the printed design.
04:14 🧯 *Final Steps and Results*
- Checking alignment and ensuring tape doesn't hang over edges.
- Removing the transfer promptly after pressing to avoid tape residue.
- Highlighting the effectiveness of the method with zero ghosting results.

Thank you for the time stamps.
you're a genius! im going to try that right now!!!!
Lol Hi Bill & Danielle! Let me know if it worked for your project! 😊
@@SewandPrintwithJulia it sort of did.... it's definitely better! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I sublimate a lot, but this is the first time I'm doing drawstring bags, and turns out, they are a nightmare! I've watched so many videos and no one has the issues I'm having; unevenness and ghosting. Although your tip IS helping the ghosting part, so I just got tweak some things and keep practicing! Thanks so much!!!
@@billdaniellehenke2521 I used to do the drawstring bags all the time! Are you doing the linen ones or the white Santa sack ones? Just make sure the top part of the bag (the hem) and the drawstrings are hanging off the heat press.
@@SewandPrintwithJulia I'm doing the regular 100% drawstring gym bags. I do have the straps and corners off the platen. I've tried with and without a pillow inside, and still I get uneven transferring. Maybe I need a new pillow, and also not press so heavy so when the press pulls the paper it doesn't drag it. I think that's why I'm still getting a little ghosting. Hopefully a new pillow will fix the unevenness. Unless you have a better idea, I'm all ears! :)
Danielle
Sorry, 100% white polyester drawstring gym bags I mean
Does the tape damage the heat press top in any way?. I did my first sublimation on satin n it ghost, 👻 👻 so now going to try this.
Hi Denise! No, the heat tape doesn't "melt" like normal scotch tape would or anything else that may not be heat resistent. I just don't like to keep anything sticking to the heat platen for long.
If for some reason you do get a little stickiness or glue goo from the tape, just turn off your heat press and when it is cool, clean the heat platen with a microfiber towel but the premium heat tape shouldn't be leaving any mark on the heat press platen,
@@SewandPrintwithJulia Thank you.
@@SewandPrintwithJulia Will try tomorrow thank you.
Does the heat tape come off the edge of your transfer, or is it totally on the back of your transfer? Hard to tell in the video. Can you apply this technique to hardboard coasters? Thanks for this. I can't wait to try it!
Hi! The heat tape stays on the back of the transfer. You can do the same technique with coasters. Just make sure your design has a bleed that is slightly bigger than the coaster and I usually have to make sure the transfer is lined up on the coaster(s) just before I close the heat press.
Sorry, but I don't see how you can align your transfer with the coaster and not have it move when you put the blowout paper on top. Perhaps you could do a video using a hardboard coaster? :) @@SewandPrintwithJulia
@@fayeyentz7975 Sure! I could do a future video on this. It is using the same technique as sublimating the fabric. Have you been getting ghosting on your coasters? And what type of coasters are you sublimating on? I can do a video on the ones you're most interested in doing. I have several different varieties from the car coasters to the regular cork back square ones to the neoprene ones. Got them all! LOL
@@fayeyentz7975 Also your top cover sheet (the one that goes over the transfer) is already attached to your transfer so it shouldn't be moving. All you're doing is making sure your transfer that is taped to your cover sheet is aligned with your coaster. Hope that helps! But I'll do a sublimating on a hardboard coaster video soon! :)
Thanks! I do mostly sandstone car coasters and hardboard square coasters. Is bleeding the same as ghosting? I often get a blueish smudge if the design has a white or light background. It would be super to see a video on the coasters. You're awesome! I really appreciate you!
everywhere else says to tape sublimation paper to the substrate...so you are having the heat press take the sublimation sheet off right away, hmmm
Hi @IUpaulshircliff! Yes. Ghosting happens when the transfer sheet shifts on the substrate when opening the heat press. This may not happen with all substrates but I find this tip works for most all substrates where pro-spray or tacking down with heat tape doesn't do the trick. Or if pro-spray is not recommended due to the residue that can be left behind and mess up deign, colors, or fabric especially on light weight fabrics like the satin I use in my videos. This tip prevents that.
What kind of heat press do you use?
Hi Katie! I use a Geo Knight DK20 16" x 20" clamshell heat press. :)
@@SewandPrintwithJulia Thanks.
I tried your trick and it didn’t work for me 😢I’ve ruined so many towels! I don’t know what else to do.
Hi! Can you explain what is happening on your towels? Are you getting ghost images on your design? Or are you perhaps getting faded colors? (Which would be another issue.) The towel should stay on the heat press while the transfer should be sticking to the top platen not touching the towels when opening.
@@SewandPrintwithJulia ghosting is on the towel and there’s some fading. The towel is staying the heat pad and the print is on the heat plate. I taped the towel down on the heat pad and that stopped the ghosting but there’s still fading, Temp is 370 and pressed for 100 seconds. I’ve tried lower temp and less time, which doesn’t help, the print is faded if I do lower heat and less time.
Are these polyester waffle towels? Polyester terry cloth towels? I could suggest a time and temp but each has different temps and pressing times. If the whole towel seems faded, then that's a pressure or time issue not so much a temp issue. If the fading is spotty like it only appears in some spots on the towel, that would suggest a heat press issue where you have cold spots on your heat platen where the coils are starting to burn out.
@@SewandPrintwithJulia I tried a different polyester fabric and no ghosting. I’m thinking it’s the towel itself. The towel is polyester.
Useful if you print once a day, nothing else.
Thanks Alex for your comment but I print my fabric in bulk using this method. I set up my orders and inventory in an hour or so in the morning which involves just printing and while the designs are printing, that’s when I set up my fabric printing pieces like you see in the video before I start pressing for the day usually around 50 to 60 pieces of fabric (sometimes more especially during fourth quarter when I’m printing my Christmas stocking fabric and sometimes less during slow times) along with my orders that are print on demand for the day then I hit the press and press all my fabric at once and any orders. What takes the longest is waiting for the sublimation printer in the morning to print each design. Lol
You should explain why you did this. Why it works.
