"The world is ending, though few believe it. The Chaos Gods, the Dark Brothers, tire of their Great Game. Now they seek to sweep the board clean with fire and blood. For centuries, the Empire has held firm against its enemies. Mankind has encountered no foe that steel could not tame, or whom walls could not hold. At least, that is what they taught. No one spoke of the ancient enemy now rising from beneath, and no one will be left to tell the tale... unless you can stem the Vermintide."
    .... For context.
(Beware asking for any Warhammer (Fantasy or 40k) Lore ... because there's Hundreds of Books about this stuff)
It's also called Endtimes because It IS the end ... it's like the last few months before the Chaos Gods show up and everything turns to black... So you wonder 'what's the point in fighting then'? ... It's because the characters don't realize they're ants fighting a meteor.

"The beautiful thing about music, in or out of context, is that it can mean a million different things" Couldn't have said it better.
This track alone is an example
For me, instead of being a theme of incoming glory for the Skaven and Pactsworn for their invasion, it's more of a "Last Stand" theme from the perspective of the Ubersreik 5 (The group you play as). They very well know they are all doomed, there is no escaping it, they don't talk about saving the world or being heros (even if they do LOVE to brag and theorize about stuff like what epic songs people would make of them) they talk about living ONE more day. About SLOWING down the Skaven's plans, their invasion, the skittergate, etc.
The U5 know they're doomed, they know the situation is unsalvageable...But that doesn't mean they will EVER give up. And that's what i love about every single one of those 5 idiots, they all came from different backgrounds, hell one of them is basically a religious racist yet they STILL all work together under the same goal. Never give up. Never give a SINGLE INCH without a fight. And go down with hammer in hand.

Pretty reductive to call Viktor a "religious racist" when he is one of the most open-minded Witch Hunter Captains out there and both the Dwarf and the Elf are also extremely racist (Bardin casually so, while Kerillean straight up looks down on them)
The only one that doesn't say a lot of racist shit is Sienna.

Its a faction of enemies that consists of actual humans and demihumans, and they allied with the Skaven to help tear down the existing kingdoms of the surface world. So your comment about the song introducing a more human element may have been the composer reflecting the fact that there is a new focus on human enemies in this game

Because he loves ALL life - including all the fungus, bacteria, and parasites. His gift is to let you nurture that life without the fear of dying. His followers become almost impervious to pain, feeling only a but of mild itching as mushrooms and worms burst from their skin, and being only mildly inconvenienced when distended intestines burst from their stomachs. This series is very unique to me because it goes out of its way to show you that the Ubersreik Five, the protagonists of the story, are awful AWFUL people who hate each other and only stick together because the situation demands it. Kruber and Saltzpyre have a business relationship as mercenary and employer but Sienna and Saltzpyre are natural enemies as witch and witch hunter, likewise with Bardin and Kerillian with their dwarf/elf hatred. They've all got dark secrets that they don't want the others to know about, dark thoughts that keep them awake at night. How the elf counts every kill in the hopes that she can even out the innocent lives she took with her mistake. How the mercenary wonders if selling his party out to the enemy and running away would be a better option.
They are an incredibly dysfunctional group, but over time they begrudgingly work together as a cohesive unit and the chemistry/banter is second to none. No game comes close.

The character of it aside, as both a musician and actor myself, I can say I fully understand and appreciate the way you're 'getting into it'. The game itself really does it's best to set the ambiance, using dynamic music signals to let players know what's about to happen, to say nothing of the visuals. It's basically Warhammer Fantasy Left4Dead, but not so stale and overdone as 'zombies' in terms of setting, especially since the skaven themselves have personality to them.

It's interesting how close you get to the context of the setting. The End-Times was a story arc the owners of Warhammer implemented to - quite literally - bring their fantasy universe to an end (40k was selling better). The story ramped up to 11 with how the global threats escalated beyond comprehension.
The skaven - a disjointed race that outnumbered all other living things - was held back from world conquest because they were too craven and conniving to stop backstabbing each other. In the End-Times, their god himself appeared and told them to unite for the Great Ascendency, the prophesized day that the Children Of The Horned Rat would take over the surface world.
Chaos, the cosmic force of humans and demons that embodied cosmic forces that could end civilization, united behind the Everchosen - a champion of all the Chaos Gods gifted by *all* of them to bring ruination to the world. A warhost unlike any had ever seen marched upon the lands of men, from the north with the very gods meddling with the outcomes of battles. Whole cities were razed at the hands of the warhost, while others were brought to festering ruin at the hands of the champions of the god of disease.
The first necromancer Nagash returned from his lengthy death, leading a host of immortal undead from the south.
The greenskins - a species whose existence was centered entirely on violence - gathered into their own massive army (a great waaaagh).
Legends among men were corrupted by power, succumbing to dark influence.
The gods of order grew mostly silent, their power a mere shadow compared to the chaos gods.
The Lizardmen - an ancient race that existed since humanity were still tribal cavemen - were descended upon by a verminous horde of skaven so extreme they built siege ladders from the corpses of their trampled brethren. The rats in their madness *nuked the moon* and nearly caused doomsday there when the shards of the moon turned to meteors, with only a self-sacrificing act of magic outpaced only by the gods themselves being enough to spare the rest of the world for the moment.
The elves had been in a long decline after millennia of war, internal conflict, and the shattering of their species into 3 cultures (High elf, dark elf, wood elf, etc). They were united in the last moments in a move nobody liked, where the lord of the Dark Elves became the sole ruler/leader of elvenkind.
The dwarves were besieged from above by greenskins and from below by skaven, their mountain homes being subjected to wars of attrition and chemical warfare that demonstrated the flaws of isolationism.
And in the dying moments of the world, when the fate of all hanged in the balance, the final straw for all of life on the planet... a simple, cold-hearted betrayal, one man putting the knife literally into one of the last champions of order - and proverbially/metaphorically into the franchise itself as the world ceased to exist.
I think you can hear the magnitude of that grim reality - and the fate of the world - in this music. The moments of relief are brief, punctuated by the knowledge that you'll only have won the battle, not the war. Not even the gods themselves could stand up against the coming end of the world...
But these characters? The Ubersreik Five you play as in Vermintide? They stand defiant all the same, and in their defiance they show the unity of purpose - that harmony - triumphs over even the most dire of odds.

Just as they constantly rise against Men and Dwarfs to seek their basic needs for food and space, they also constantly fight amongst themselves to ensure the greatest access and control over these resources. Definitely need to tell you that Warhammer has two settings: the future of our galaxy in the year 40000, and a dark fantasy realm (the original). This soundtrack is from the fantasy setting.
One thing I love about vermintide's music is that all of it sounds like it's made BY the antagonists rather than for them. The skaven themed soundtracks sound discordant with scratchy strings and steel drums, as if the skaven are playing it on crude instruments, especially since a lot of their technology is sinister but crude and just as likely to harm skaven as it is to harm their enemies. It suits their personalities of being mad scientists but also hiding in the dark, waiting to flood the surface world and consume everyone. The Norsca focused soundtracks have a lot of war horns and tribal drumming, which fits their 'barbarian horde worshipping dark gods' personality

Listening to this and the tense nature of it also reminds me of the dragon age inquisition soundtrack by trevor morris.
While it has some more heroic parts where the emphasis is placed on hope and emerging victorious after a fierce battle, a good few of the tracks from the basegame and the expansions alike, especially when the 'fade' is concerned usually are very creepy and feel threatening... a place where spirits and demons reside and everything is twisted and warped, things not like they seem to be.
'Lord seeker' reflects this and you can feel bits seep into other songs like 'The wrath of heaven' which plays early on in the game and is a good representation for the overall mood and tone of it. But there are certainly other tracks which may catch your attention like the main theme from trespasser or the vocal track that plays on the journey to skyhold, to something more battle orientated like 'alexius'.

Mechanicus soundtracks have already been recommended here (I will add only Dance of Cryptek).
    So Dawn of War 2:
    - Angels of Death
    - For the Craftworld (stuck on this when choosing, too great music :D )
    - Dark Calculation
    - There Will Be Retribution
    - There is Only War
    It's quite epic.
I also suddenly remembered the noteworthy soundtrack for the game Vampyr:
    - Blood
    - Life is Circus
    - Twisted Tango
    - Incane Family

A bit late reply, but I always took the themes in this as the creepy parts being the ratmen, skaven who have now teamed up with the actual end times threat of chaos, basically demon worshipping people from north taking the more bombastic drops.

I feel like the one piece of context that would've made you enjoy this even more is if you knew this plays when you're the last man standing on the team. That, plus it's the leitmotif of the Vermintide games, so it mixes this sense of despair with the grand heroism of you possibly surviving and rescuing your team from the brink.

They really made a good pick for each of those imo

Sticking to Warhammer games, I'd absolutely recommend some tracks from the Total War Warhammer series, in particular I'd say you'd want to hear the Main Theme from the first game 'Faith, Steel, & Gunpowder' though thats a short one, but most definitely you'll want to listen to 'Dragonflame' from the second game. I'd recommend listening to the 'dynamic' version of that track.

With all honesty, there is track in Vermintide 2 that is a spin of this piece, but warps it into a desperate heroism.
It only plays when you're the last player alive in a mission.
It's titled Vermintide 2 Unreleased OST - Last Hero Standing
You should look it up, and possibly comment on it too.

  • @AngeryCrow
    @AngeryCrow Před rokem

Vermintide, as an actual event of Warhammer Fantasy, is literally one of the main chapter of a bigger event that's called Endtime.
It's the unification of damnation, unholiness, and darkness of the force of Chaos.
The main theme really captured how would it feel to be surrounded by a giant horde of ravenous ratmen, ready to eat you alive, or just stabs you to death, or tosses you into the pit for slavery.

  • @intensepraisingofthesun14
