- I don't like breathing the exhausts from Briggs o Strattons oilburner. Another reason to convert to electricity is the price of environmental friendly gasoline. This mover works great for regular cutting. The geared motor is 450 Watt and 500 rpm. The batteries are four 12V, 7Ah, in series and parallel to make 24V and 14Ah. I have been cutting for 15 min and no signs of battery weakening. The speed controller is not getting warm.

I have an 1960’s Jacobsen reel mower that has a 2 stroke motor on it. I have been planning to replace it with a cordless drill. I tried it for awhile but ended up breaking the transmission in the drill. Next I’m gonna try a brushless RC 1/8th scale motor directly driven off the motor. That will allow for a standardized motor controller with the ability to remote control the whole mower since it has self propelled functionality. All I will need to do is add a steering servo and a clutch servo. Thanks for the inspiration!

im planning on doing the same..my reel mower only needs about 100 rpms max with high torque..any suggestions? i was just thinking of using a 20v dewalt drill set to the low speed and using that..

Which "speed controller" are you using?
I am using a controller from an old Scooter. Nothing you can buy from a store, but there are plenty of suitable controllers on eBay.

On my lathe i turned a bushings inner diameter to the diameter of the rotating axle, and the bushings outer diameter to the inner diameter of the sprocket. Then a few welding spots. Done.
