  • Oppenheimer - Only In Theaters 7 21 23
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations.

, "Oppenheimer", it's clear that it's another glorification of the architects of destruction. It's a tale spun by the industrial ruling class, a narrative that paints the creators of the most devastating weapon in human history as heroes. But let's not forget, these are the same minds that have brought us to the brink of self-destruction, the same minds that have poisoned the Navajo Nation with their unending radioactive spill.
The industrial ruling class and their nuclear energy tell us a story of progress and power, but what they don't tell us is the cost.
You look on any of those trailers and you see everybody's just as lost as the people who have created this system. They just speak of the movie itself but not that it has a stark impact on our lives as human beings". But they had become so assimilated they no longer can tell the difference

And for some people it will be completely opposite. I'm fascinated by WW2 and everything to do with it, I read books about it, watch documentaries, travel around WW2 sites, never miss a single movie.. 2 hours into Oppenheimer I was checking what time is it, and as soon as movie finished most people stood up and left immediately. I would say it is little bit overhyped for what it is, for the most part literally nothing happens, dialogs leads to nothing, I could feel a tension only during countdown. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad movie but not 10/10. IMDb gave it 8.8/10 which is about right. It is 3 hours long, but not "Godfather" 3 hours type long.

Weeks before the first bomb was dropped, on July 13, 1945, Japan had sent a telegram to the Soviet Union expressing its desire to surrender and end the war. The United States had broken Japan’s codes and read the telegram. Truman referred in his diary to “the telegram from Jap Emperor asking for peace.” President Truman had been informed through Swiss and Portuguese channels of Japanese peace overtures as early as three months before Hiroshima. Japan objected only to surrendering unconditionally and giving up its emperor, but the United States insisted on those terms until after the bombs fell, at which point it allowed Japan to keep its emperor. So, the desire to drop the bombs may have lengthened the war. The bombs did not shorten the war.

As he witnessed the first detonation of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945, a piece of Hindu scripture ran through the mind of Robert Oppenheimer: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. It is, perhaps, the most well-known line from the Bhagavad-Gita, but also the most misunderstood.
Oppenheimer died at the age of sixty-two in Princeton, New Jersey on February 18, 1967. As wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, the birthplace of the Manhattan Project, he is rightly seen as the “father” of the atomic bomb. “We knew the world would not be the same,” he later recalled. “A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.” Oppenheimer, watching the fireball of the Trinity nuclear test, turned to Hinduism. While he never became a Hindu in the devotional sense, Oppenheimer found it a useful philosophy to structure his life around. "He was obviously very attracted to this philosophy,” says Rev Dr Stephen Thompson, who holds a PhD in Sanskrit grammar and is currently reading a DPhil at Oxford University on other aspects of the language and Hindu faith. Oppenheimer’s interest in Hinduism was about more than a soundbite, it was a way of making sense of his actions.

Neither the US or the Soviets had any intentions of starting a hostile conflict. The Soviets were sick of war too and just lost over 25 million people. While both the Soviets and the US were afraid the other side was going to attack them. Declassified documents from the CIA show that even the CIA didn't think the Soviets wanted to start a actual war with the west after WW2, they had no plans, no intention and no desire for a WW3.
The cold war was mostly fueled by extreme paranoia. There are plenty of times in history where no large wars happened for long periods of time. There are no good reasons to think that mutually assured destruction alone prevented WW3. The only thing mutually assured destruction insured was preventing a nuclear war, since neither side wanted to use nuclear weapons in fear of nuclear retaliation. If there was no nuclear weapons in the first place that wouldn't have been an issue either. For example, say nuclear weapons were never invented at all, it actually doesn't change much, because both the Soviets and Americans would still understand a totally conventional conflict would still be devastating and cost millions of lives, probably even worse than WW2. That already was deterrence enough.

I am Japanese. My husband's family, who were survivors of the atomic bomb, lives in Hiroshima and I am interested in the atomic bomb, so I am looking forward to seeing this movie in Japan.
Regarding the movie, there seems to be controversy over the fact that it did not depict the damage that occurred in Hiroshima, but I don't think it is necessary to depict it.
This is because the best way to see the actual damage is to come to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and see the actual damage.
●The atomic bomb was not dropped on a battlefield, but on a city where civilians lived, killing 140,000 people.
●Victims included not only Japanese people but also many foreigners.
●When exposed to the atomic bomb, the blood in the body instantly evaporates and expands, causing the skin to sag.
●Even if their lives were saved, some died of leukemia a few years later, or committed suicide because they could not bear the pain of the after-effects.
●The atomic bomb did not serve as a military deterrent, but instead increased the number of nuclear-weapon states in the world.
●Vast areas of land in the United States have been contaminated due to nuclear tests and the effects of westerly winds.
    …etc.
There are many things on display that even I, a Japanese person, didn't know about.
I hope this film will give people around the world an opportunity to think about true peace.

This movie is going to be another cinematic masterpiece from Christopher Nolan. Also, I’m glad that Cillian Murphy is having the chance to prove his unique performance to portray the man who built the most powerful and destructive weapon ever created.

Most powerful and destructive for sure. But I think that it may also be the weapon that saved the most lives ever. Historians are in unanimity that without the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, war would have continued for quite a while longer in the Pacific, ending with the total annihilation of Japan by a massive Allied invasion. Who even knows how many lives that would have sacrificed.

@@CristiNeagu that is not true. history is not a closed book. there is no unanimous consenus regarding the NEED TO DROP ONE LET ALONE 2 BOMBS in Japan. This is pure american and allie propaganda to try to assuage ourselves that a justified decision and moral decision was made to actually test the bomb on civilian populations and announce the US's rise as the world hegemon. we have used that bobm three times. thebfirst time was in trinity new mexico where it was tested in close proximity to mexican american and native american populations witjout warning. Spewing this lie abt yhe end of wwii is what leads to situations like Ukraine and Taiwan where the US Military Industrial Complex and media are trying to persuade and get the western public to believe that using atomic weapons would be justified in Ukraine against Russia and against China because remember that Putin is the new hitler (although the Ukrainian army is full if Nazis] and that China is scary, although we are the ones who have invaded and destroyed countries and killed civilians at the behest of our elite and multinationals. furthermore ppl are also being led to believe that we would be able to survive a nuclear attack in our cities [nyc: i am looking at you]. the US is one of the most propagandized nation and ppl in the world and wwii is a huge part of that brainwashing. this thinking is what leads to these types of harmful military decisions and the mess that is our [US] current foreign policy.

Cillian Murphy is one of the most underrated actors of our time and I'm stoked he has the leading man role. Nolan is going to bring it with this film. Seems like this film is going to be on Interstellar's level of epicness. Can't wait!

Just watched this masterpiece today. Clearly the best work so far from Nolan. Brilliant acting from Cillian and Downey. The cinematography and the direction was on a whole new level. The BGM throughout the movie gives chills and is so perfect. And ofc the Christopher Nolan X factor at the end. Now get the deserving Oscar.

What I really love the most about this trailer is the music. It’s atmospheric, strangely uplifting as well as sinister, very emotive. The swelling horns or strings or whatever they are extremely warm and uplifting, which contrasts so strangely but beautifully against the horror of the potential of nuclear weaponry. The imagery is cosmic, big-bang-esque, yet all the dialogue points to the anxiety and dread of such an invention. I love this contrast very much, it creates a strange space we’re we can sort of feel how absurd, miraculous, and horrifying it is for human beings to have reached the threshold of such power. “I don’t know if we can be trusted…” well that’s really the thesis of the whole thing aint it

I love how in each still shown in this trailer, Cillian Murphy has the expression of the man who is terrified of his creation but still goes on pursuing it without any control over his mind or heart! Absolutely genius actor and an equally brilliant director. Can't wait to watch this masterpiece ❤
