    Thanks for making these videos. I've ran out of gas twice on the road, luckily in safe enough spots. Time to fix this!

    A couple things. There is a rubber O-ring under each of the white plastic caps that may not retain their shape properly and may be difficult to align during replacement. They seem to expand once the white plastic plate is removed. Also, make sure the o-ring doesn't drop into the tank when you lift the sensor/fuel pump assembly up and out. The second thing is this. The portion of the sensor you cleaned is only half of what needs to be cleaned. Clean the contact point on the lever arm as well. Use the same q-tip and alcohol there. The contact point on the lever arm is what moves over the fixed plate when the fuel level rises and lowers. That lever arm can be pulled away from the fixed plate just a bit after pushing the clamp posts that secure the lever arm to the assembly. You can see it beneath the plastic piece you remove to get at the fixed plate. Be careful not to break the wire spring. If you don't clean the contact on the lever arm, you will see the same black stuff being deposited on the fixed contact plate once you move the lever arm up and down after the cleaning is done.

      Hal D I have a question.the black lid that goes over the sensor.does it have to be placed a certain way to screw it back on properly?i had replaced my fuel pump and after putting everything back on I can smell gas fumes like crazy when I’m driving.im wondering if maybe I installed the black lid wrong and letting out fumes

    • @HD24680
      @HD24680 Před 5 lety +3

      Rafagas...sorry for the delayed response. I just came back on here because of something else.
      My guess is that the o-ring(s) did not seat properly in the groove after you tightened the black ring down. I’m assuming you have already gotten your answer by now, but in case someone else has the same problem as you.
      You have to be certain the o-ring sits in the groove properly or you will not have a proper seal and will get the gas fumes coming out of the tank. That original o-ring will expand once it is removed. Pushing it back in from around the edges under the white plastic cap with a small screw driver worked for me. The other option is to purchase new o-rings prior to doing the repair.
      I don’t remember the black metal hold down portion as having a particular direction for replacement.

    Nice video. Thanks for making it. Although I tried this but it didn't solve my problem. Eventually bit the bullet and took mine to the dealer to diagnose the issue. Turns out the problem was the AC Climate Control Temperature Module (Unified Meter and AC Amp). If you look at the circuit diagram, this module controls the fuel gauge as well as the AC. It's just a false name. It actually controls a lot of other things. So I purchased a used on on ebay and now the gauge works perfectly.
    The repair manual actually says to check this unit but typically only the dealer has the Nissan diagnostic tool to tell you that this unit has failed.

      @@blessedwiddit Infiniti dealers charge $224 for diagnostics. I know because I’m going through it right now. My car stopped accelerating because I ran out of gas, I didn’t know it was my fuel pump. I had recently bought the car too so I’m taking on someone else’s issues 🙄 nonetheless, my gauges are off so they need cleaning but I’m not letting Infiniti repair my car, I’ll do it myself. They’re also charging me another $224 to diagnose my door and tell me why my door doesn’t lock(most likely the actuator) but yeah, so far I’m up to 9k in repair costs.

    2004 350Z had intermittent gas level readings, Cleaning the contacts on the variable resistor as described in your video worked great. The only caution is when reattaching the plastic cover make sure the float arm is in mid range to allow the plastic locking pins to easily snap back into the closed position and apply force to the arm wiper against the "teeth" of the variable (fuel level) resistor.

    Those little bolts you have to take out are 8mm. Mine had paint on them I had to chip off to get the wrench on. I tried a screw driver but just ended up stripping out the screw head. So best advice is just use 8mm wrench or a socket if you can get in on. May have to chip off the paint first before a socket will fit. One other thing, be careful around the edge of that circular opening, its sharp. Found out the hard way.

    Okay yeah to anyone doing this, be extremely fucking careful when resealing everything.
    Like someone else mentioned there's rubber O rings under both sides when you take the top off.. when you put them back in, either buy new ones and replace them or make 1000% sure they're in exactly where they need to be and not damaged.
    I didn't correctly seal one sides o ring (of course the side with the fuel line into it) and when I filled up at the petrol station, I came out after paying and petrol had leaked everywhere. Had to get my car towed and currently buying a new O ring to seal it.
    Be extremely careful with this!

      you gotta do continuity test from one end of wire to the other....either get wireless ohm reading device, or long cord to hook your dmm leads to
      so put one end of dmm lead on one end of the SAME wire (continuity, aka good wire test, aka NO OPENs aka NO BREAKS in wire test is in SAME wire)
      and put other DMM lead on other end of SAME wire (hence why need extension maybe bc other end of wire goes all the way up to ecu :) or really I guess the PCM thingy in the tank right?

      Are you getting a fault code for it still (or were you ever?)? If so, did you clear the code(s) after cleaning? If you haven't, def do that! They may not fix the problem but it might. If that doesn't work, you might also need to clear the self learned memory... This is something very few people know about/think to do, but can make all the difference! Even after you clear fault codes, the ecu oftentimes still has them in the self learned memory! It's really easy to do in just a couple min, just Google how to do that, hopefully that will help!

      The reason for two sensors is that due to the shape of the underbody, the tank had to be divided almost in half. I would imagine that's why one side was much dirtier, because that side empties first and sees air more often. The passenger side was dirtiest at the top, which is what would see air the most (and allow the film to harden). Definitely do both.

      Rubbing alcahol works great but you could always use cologne.

      anything hydrophobic and a solvent is good....really water even be ok maybe especially you dry it bc youre gonna put it right back in gas right? but be good and use solvent and qtip or somethin :)

    My fuel gauge is always stuck on Full. I have the check engine light & the code reads to change fuel level sensor & it suggests changing the sending unit. I changed the fuel pump since it came out more convenient than just buying the sensor but the fuel gauge still doesn’t work. Do you think the sending unit is the problem for me?

      Coby Hester I have an 06, same fuel gauge issue except now I have a code p0462 which says fuel sensor circuit. I'd asume they are a little different to the 08. However I wonder if the sensor has anything to do with how the fuel pump works.

    • @CobHes
      @CobHes Před 6 lety

      MrWati25 oh okay. Hmm that’s interesting. I haven’t tried this out yet but I don’t have check engine light on for anything fuel related. But also when I do this I’m going to go ahead and replace the fuel pump while I got it open.

    • @antonyh37
      @antonyh37 Před 6 lety

      Ok, so I just checked it out and went to clean like the video showed. I didn't have to take the whole pump out, I was able to access the little connection on the pump side as it didn't have a protective cover on it nor did it have the mount for one so it was easy, it was in fact dirty and contacts covered in gray crud. Then I did the same on the other side which did have the protective cover on it however I was able to clean with a Qtip through the rather large front opening. That side was also dirty. I leak checked and closed everything up. The gauge seemed more responsive immediately and I hooked up my code reader and deleted the code. Hopefully this was my solution. So yea ours are a little easier access than the 08. I say go for it. Took me less than an hour.

      MrWati25 Did the code return?

    • @antonyh37
      @antonyh37 Před 6 lety

      Marlon McIntosh No it did not. However the range of motion on the gas gauge is limited. It detects levels now just not at the right place. I don't know if I have to disconnect the battery and connect again or something actually wrong with the sender itself. The code never returned tho.

      flipmode00 squad only other thing could be is the gauge but that's a lot harder to figure out. Cleaning my sender units fixed it and works perfectly now. Hope you can figure it out and if you do, let us know what it was. Thanks

      I read that I may have to solder the gauge part on the cluster something I do not want to do or send it for repair which will cost $200 I think. But once its fix I will let you know.

    • @smc9764
      @smc9764 Před 6 lety +1

      Not sure about the 09, but on the older G35's you can do a self test of the gauge. It would move the fuel and temp gauges to the middle. If the needles did not go to the middle then that meant your gauge was broken. Try searching for combination meter self test.

    • @flipmode00
      @flipmode00 Před 6 lety

      Steven Coffey I posted a video about the self test and everything works fine but still don't know why its acting up. Plus I switch the gauge to an 2010 one and it was fine too. Its mind blowing

    Nice vids but lets be rational. It's expensive to fix, but how many years do u get buying new sending units compared to how much time inbetween cleaning an old one that may just crap out on you?? Save your money to maintain these cars period. Stop modding cars when u making Hella high payments. Rich stay rich by acting poor and the poor stay broke by trying to look rich waketfu.
