The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

@@beatle9239 Oh yeah, TV directors don't nkow what they're doing when comes to shooting bands. They'll show the bass player during the guitar solo, the singer or the drummer during a keyboard solo etc. One of my favorites of this thing was when the band Motorhead appeared on the British TV show The Young Ones. The band had two guitarists at the time, and during the middle of the song, the two guitarists trade off solos, one guy solos, then the other, then back to the first guy, then second guy again. And there's not one single shot of either guitarist while he's soloing. They invariably show the guy who's playing rhythm guitar during the OTHER player's solo!

@@SeekerGoOn2013 Yeah, but that continued to be a problem forever after. Watch footage of almost any band during the 70's or 80's even, the same thing happens, they show the wrong band members during the solos. The only time doesn't happen is when you're watching some concert video that was produced for the home video market, or MTV or osmething like that, where they could take the time and cut it together later (and then, often times, you'd get out of sync shots because the director decided he wanted a given shot at a given time, but would pull it from somewhere else in the show, or it'd be a few beats off).

Rock 'n' roll was still relatively new at that particular time. There was still an alienation between the older generation, who didn't like/understand rock 'n' roll, and the kids, as there had been in the 1950's.
The person at the control panel monitoring the screens wasn't familiar with the Beach Boys music (likely being older), so he didn't know which camera to switch to at what time. Either that, or they didn't establish much going forward in rehearsals.
If you want to see a good example of a crew that is apparently unfamiliar with the music they are filming, you can check out the Beatles' first recorded concert in the U.S., at Washington D.C., in 1964. The crew filming it really didn't know how to highlight who was performing, and as a result, the filmed performance looks unprofessional, by our slick standards of today. On the other hand the way it turned out really makes it something of a timepiece.

@@avlisk Yes, it sheer laziness of mind when people say they didn't play their instruments. As time went on, and as Brian expanded as a producer, he wanted the best. Plus, he could create in the studio while the rest of them were off playing shows with his replacements, first Glen Campbell, then Bruce Johnston. One big thing though, when you look at those session sheets, you'll see Carl playing here, Dennis playing there, Brian too. Even on Pet SOunds and Smile, it wasn't all the Wrecking Crew.
One of the other things (and the whole reason I ever explored them) was the respect they got from Clapton and Beck, both loving the older lead guitar solos of Carl's (you see plenty of video of Carl)...and of course Brian's writing (makes me wonder if that studio work Beck and Brian worked on back in 2013 will ever get finished).

The BBs did a great job keeping true to their recordings on this show with Wendy and I Get Around. Just the 5 of them. Now it takes a "tribute band" of maybe 8 musicians plus some of the original BBs fronting it to sound maybe as good. I've seen the BBs every decade since the 60s. They were at their zenith in the 60s.
