    Been very happily for 50 years now and my wife and I have always loved dancing but she could never get the reggae/ska rhythm for some reason but I loved it - and still do. We had a good bunch of friends we used to go out with quite regularly and there was one lady who really got into it so she and I would always 'get it on' in a tame sort of way on the dance floor to anything by UB40 or Aswad or the Blue Beats. Wicked stuff.

    This is ska.
    A long time ago, the UK had a labor shortage and started taking in immigrants to help cover the labor shortage. That's how you ended up with Jamaicans and working class Brits working together on the docks. Reggae and rock/punk blended together into ska.
    If you like ska, the best American ska band is the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which leaned more on the punk side than rock.

    • @Rollin404
      @Rollin404 Před 3 lety +1

      Ska is Jamaican it arrived here with the Jamaican workers. My cousins are Scottish x Jamaican, my father was working with the Jamacian's on the railways and building sites. I grew up hearing Jamaican Ska, rocksteady and reggae, first saw UB40 1980 when I was working at Keele University...they were gigging in Student Union. Rock steady, reggae and punk developed from Ska, Trojan records were the best producers of reggae. UB40 paid homage to their heroes doing cover versions on the Labour of Love Albums. Their own music was always edgy with a political stance just like their name.

    • @TheRaxtone
      @TheRaxtone Před 3 lety +1

      Definitely not reggae and rock into ska! Before reggae/dancehall there was ska ska ska...horn heavy, drums and guitar. After that was rocksteady, more slowed down, romance and party heavy. Reggae emerged later out of that carrying the guitar rift mostly but an intense bass and more attitude. Dancehall, branched off reggae. Much like hip hop and R&B interms of pacing.

    The band's name comes from the Unemployment Benefit form but not all the band members were receiving state benefit even though unemployment was on the rise in the UK at that time. Brian Travers (the saxophonist) and Robin Campbell (Ali's brother) were serving apprenticeships. Ali and Earl Falconer (the bassist) and a few other band members knew each other from school so they were friends before they were a band. The music they would end up covering was what they grew up with in the late 60s/early 70s. At the beginning, they were told that they should write their own material. The (mostly) self-penned prior to 1983's "Labour of Love" are legendary and their is even a dub version of "Present Arms" (the first dub album to make the UK top 40 in the album charts). Robin Campbell once said that why write a new song if somebody else has already said beautifully what they wanted to say?

    UB40 was the only music I would listen to when I drove to St Augustine in Florida. No idea why but it just seemed so fitting. Used to see Pili Pili a lot back then as well in Jax

    Ya, this is one of a few Elvis signature songs, from Blue Hawaii, thinking 1961... I think this was one of last songs of an Elvis Concert at many of his concerts. very, very popular cover

    This was release in '93. It was on the soundtrack for Sliver. The movie was about a guy(William Baldwin) with tons of hidden cameras in an apartment complex.
