Not exactly how it went. Although royalties did enable him to buy houses for family. There were disputed claims as to authorship and ownership of the song. But the UB40 single definitely got him out of a real tight spot. Lots of details here. jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20140504/ent/ent5.html

J💝Y you’ve got to listen to their first album “signing off” Its my favourite. UB40 was named after a form/card in the 70’s and 80’s you got when you signed on to receive unemployment benefits off the government. The whole band were unemployed hence then name. The album was named signing off because they were earring money from their music and came off benefits.

Things like Sugar Minott - Good Thing Going , Janet Kay - Silly Games, Night Nurse - Gregory Isaacs, You Don't Love Me - Dawn Penn - Greetings - Half Pint. And groups like Aswad and Steel Pulse. I've a feeling you'd like them.

I perform in a UB40 tribute band here in the UK called UB42. At times we are very privileged to have the actual UB40 horn section come and join us for a play. However, as with most UB40 songs, after the signing off album, this and many others after are covers that were originally produced by original artists. To be fair to them, they actually shared their royalties with those original artists in question, where as before the Jamaican record labels had ripped them off! ... Kingston Town was originally by The Lord Creator in 1970

UB40 were school friends in Birmingham..Ali is the youngest Campbell brother. Their covers are a homage to some of their favourite songs back in '70's in the clubs n pins here in UK. I first saw them live in late 70's gigging at a Student Union Bar at Keele University. Ali and Earl Falconer, keyboard, split, Astro followed when the original group released a country album. Brian Travers, sax player usually does the talking until he has surgery for brain tumors seeing him miss their 40th Anniversay tour .

My brother went to school with Ally Brown, we got into their concerts for free for ever even when they were at their absolute prime. They were a shining example of multi racial harmony along with other groups of the time like The Specials. They proved that "race" was not a barrier to music in the UK and was definitely not the most predominate differential, at that time class was. Other groups like Madness, who were basically skinheads (Doc Martens, short hair, braces, rolled up jeans, Crombies) also showed that "skinhead" in the UK means a very different thing to the portrayal of skinheads in the US, I was one and we were a group that didn't care what colour someone was, we just followed 2 Tone, Ska, reggae and everything in between. It was a rebellious fashion statement, not a political one.
I remember visiting the US Rhein Main Airbase in Germany when I was in the British Army in the early 90s and we genuinely could not believe that segregation (not official but it was there) still existed. We made a point of going to the "black" accommodation for a BBQ which a lot of the black guys were surprised about and following that many of the white USAF personnel would not talk to us. Funnily enough it was only the guys that blanked us, not the women.
Didn't matter as the women liked the accent so having the guys stay away was a bonus ;) I actually proposed to an American USAF female that night using the "she's lost that loving feeling" sketch from Top Gun and she accepted after 5 minutes of knowing me, we were "married" by one of my very drunk friends claiming to be a Cardinal. I should have followed that up, I seem to remember her being absolutely stunningly beautiful ;)
