New Giant TCR SL Disc | An Updated Iconic Road Bike

  • Giant announced their new TCR SL road bike quietly in April, but now Si has managed to get his hands the actual bike for a closer look. The latest model in their successful TCR range stays true to the original design from the 90's with a compact frame, and unlike many of their cycling competitors, Giant have stuck with traditional seatstays. The new 2020 model also boasts a superior construction process with lasers and robots utilised for a more precise carbon layup. Something that Giant are keen to stress has enabled them to build a stronger bike frame whilst saving weight. The frame itself is also apparently more aerodynamic and one of the lightest production road bikes on the market. What do you think of the new Giant TCR SL Disc?

Thanks for the TCR tour, Si. New build technologies sound like a game changer for the industry ... hmm, prices coming down in a few years (dollar-for-dollar) I hope after they recoup costs and the hype dies down. By that time, they'll probably have working graphene prototypes with inlaid universal electrical wiring, who knows. All I can say is, I've suspected many consumer industries, such as cars, for example, strategically save improvements for next year while planning obsolescence so they can keep sales numbers high - and can you blame them? Yes, and no, I suppose. The old expression about what's good for the goose is good for the gander is fine with me, but sometimes, I don't think the goose doesn't even dream about bike rides because they're too busy banking and flying around in their corporate/private jets. Anyway, I'm hoping quality control goes way up with these new construction methods so we don't have Hambini complaining about impossible tolerances leading to inevitable problems and blame shifting onto bearing and component manufacturers. You know, I kind of miss the old days when companies like Campy and Shimano focused on high quality materials and refined production methods for smooth operation and durability, and weren't so concerned with new tech to replace old tech. Guys: Make stuff that works without compromise so it's practically flawless, make it durable, make it light, and make it aero - and don't charge an arm and a leg for it! That's getting boring and annoying. Save that for the luxury car market or something else, please. Cyclists really appreciate high functionality and reliability, not just status and bling. Those who want the those things can still get car manufacturer collaborations (Colnago/Ferrari, and Bentley, Porsche , and Beamer bikes, for example) or limited editions for 15 grand plus. Just make an amazing stock TCR, for example, with lightweight, high quality wheels off the shelf for 3K and call it a day. You know it can be done profitably and people will love you for it. To keep profit margins high, go into AI program subscription performance monitoring/coaching, private tour/ride support travel packages, nutrition, or some other consumable industry, and let day-to-day riders purchase and keep one of your stock models running reliably and affordably for a decade plus with no concerns.

Sad to see they still persist with the silly integrated seat post on the SL version as well as the boring colour schemes. It would be nice to have one with the fancy grade of carbon but the standard seat clamp of the TCR for people who can bare to gain 45g (or so) for the convenience of being able to change saddle height by more than a cm without trimming the carbon post.

Don't forget everyone that giant offers their Composite Guarantee. They will quite literally replace your frame if you wreck it while riding it. I haven't seen any other companies that offer this for their frames which is why i'm buying a TCR.
Being a new ish rider, it takes the fear off your mind of potentially decimating your bike while riding.

I like that Giant have rejected the trend of dropped seat stays in the pursuit of questionable aero gains. Keep them simple and clean.

I own the Entry level TCR and I freaking love it. The feel and it's natural ability to feel and be fast on a whim. I can't believe I almost bought the Defy. Don't get me wrong, the Defy is a great bike, but the TCR🤤👌

@@85afar The TCR is comfortable. It also depends on you too. However, given your situation, you may want to opt for the Defy since you can use it as a gravel bike and it will definitely be more comfortable for your situation. You should ask a bike shop.

#GCN #GCNTech This bike is stunning EXCEPT for that seat/heat tube junction. I can't stop looking at it.

Giant is a great brand. Great bikes and wide variety of each. You can spec the models up or down to fit your needs and your wallet.

Looking forward to purchasing a TCR sl disc 2021 and building it with Shimano’s new Dura Ace, just not sure if I would go all CADEX or Enve.

Do you think the pr2 wheels really bog it down? I heard there the heaviest rims and there stock. I have a 2018 Giant TCR ADVANCE DISK KOM colors black and orange. Still have the stock pr2 wheels on it.

Looks great, simpler is better... I am so happy the humongous aero bikes that look and feel like tanks (and then need heavy rubber suspension added) are disappearing as fast as they came... it was so 2018... They just need to introduce rim brakes only top model in 2022 for the next level in lightweight and aero performance and we are all set ;) !!!

    Great looking bike.
Of course it’s more aero than the Trek Èmonda, the Èmonda is a old frame. Let’s see in a month when the new Èmonda comes out.
Regarding the stiffness, it’s rumored that the Èmonda will come in a 800oclv layup..
