Ferocious in his youth, and now inspirational in his old age. If there was ever a person that should be the poster child for being able to rehabilitate a damaged reputation it is Iron Mike Tyson. There was a time where I would have been frightened to be in the same room with the man. Too volatile, but something changed in his spirit and he started embracing his humanity at little more once he retired. Wouldnt be scared at all anymore

It was a combination of things actually. Two things can be true, givens was (in my opinion) dishonest, and I don’t THINK Tyson did what he was arrested for. However he also has his own issues, and did plenty of bad stuff (as he himself admitted). Don’t wash things away as if he was never an issue, because he’d be the first to tell you that he was and pretending otherwise diminishes his efforts to be a better person (which I believe he is today).

Something else I want to share. I was lucky enough to have a brief encounter with Tyson in August 1987. He was in Columbia, SC to watch the first Mark Breland/Marlon Starling fight. He had just beaten Tony Tucker and was preparing for Tyrell Biggs. At the time, his promoters were trying to arrange his fight with Michael Spinks (but Spinks was running scared). I was on the dance floor in a nightclub, and looked over and Mike Tyson was dancing right next to me! I tapped him on the upper arm and said, "Hey Mike!". I remember his arm was as solid as stone! He said, "Hey!". I said, "Kick Michael Spinks' ass for me!". He said, "Okay, I will!". It was surreal, because he was already one of my favorite boxers of all time. The most interesting thing is that he had a very small and unintimidating entourage. I guess he didn't really need big bodyguards! LOL! And on a funny note, he was NOT a good dancer! HAHAHA!!

The fight against Trevor B when he first earned the title, how hard he rang that giants bell. Best heavyweight knockout, just the greatest fighter I've ever seen. I couldn't stand the way it ended, but he was an amazing champion in his prime.

I'm in the UK, I remember watching all Tyson's fights before he won any titles, an absolute legend. He was unbeatable when younger, Buster Douglas got lucky as Iron Mike didn't take him seriously. He never regained his greatness after his spell behind bars. Unbeatable in his prime never have I seen a fighter who never throws jabs just punches with venom with either hand most were beaten before the first bell rang and I would suggest the best finisher ever if he saw a man hurt it was game over.

Just said exactly that. The anticipation of every fight was crazy. I think we were among some greats and we were not as oversaturated with content. You PLANNED around a fight night, didn't care about the superbowl commercials, made in home bets among fam members during World Series even if you didn't have a dog in the game, and you savored the NBA giants of the time be able to play closer to street ball instead of 3 bombs and no hand checks.

I met Tyson at a Cumberland Farms store in Coxsaki NY back in the mid 80’s while staffing at a church camp. I was with one of the younger campers picking up a few supplies. Although he was just an under card fighter, he was becoming very recognizable very fast. As I approached him (cautiously mind you) I asked politely: “Sir, are you Mike Tyson”? To which he replied in a soft kind voice “YEAH”! I didn’t want to disturb him while he was flipping through this comic book, so I just briefly rendered an accolade towards his fighting skills and meekly asked for his autograph which surprisingly he was very accommodating. After he signed we shook hands and I wished him the very best. It’s much better to receive and open hand and not a closed one from Tyson. As for the autograph, well! If I showed it to anyone I doubt that they would believe me since it was pretty ineligible. So I gave it to the young camper with me making this camping trip for him (and myself memorable one!)
I grew up with Mike. I met him when he was 13. Catskill, Coxsackie, Athens, Cairo, Hudson, The whole county knew when Mike was 13 he would be the heavyweight champion . 5 years later He did just that.

What else is funny, well not really funny , but Mike and I were from the same neighborhood in Brooklyn, a section called Brownsville. Bad, bad neighborhood. We roamed the streets at different times though. Same with Jay Z there were Marcy Projects directly across the street from our apartment Jay Z came from those projects. I roamed those streets in the late 60s , early 70s Then moved up to Catskill. The Brooklyn neighborhood went from middle class to Slums to what it is now Yuppyville. LOL Haven't seen Mike in many years. Kevin Rooney Sr went through hard times I asked about him last time I was upstate about 8 years ago. They laughed at me and said He's in an old folks home!!!! I was like I've been gone twenty years what do I know.

As a young kid, I was fortunate enough to be coached and trained by a young contender for the lightweight title named Toby Vigil (1946). He taught me that loosing your temper was a one way slide to disaster. He trained me how to jab, and dodge, and how to uncork power punches. I never gave in to Bullies during my whole life. Later boxing Golden Gloves and Semi-Pro too. I still stay in contact with his children, after all these years.

Mike Tyson is considered one of best top 20 boxers of all times in pound per pound , (heavier or lighter or midleweights) .
That's an understatement to describe Tyson. Lightweights wouldn't survive vs heavyweights so heavyweight champs are automatically superior.

After hearing Mike's side of the story you can understand Tyson's frustration against Holyfield that resulted Mike biting his ear, those head knocks to Tyson's head looked pretty bad afterwards, musta really hurt at the time too. Boxing is a dirty business in my opinion, it's just a quick way of making a buck [or two] and people risk getting serious injuries for the dollar no matter how professional they are. Most people say STAY SAFE! I say, STAY ALIVE! It is a God giving gift don't waste it.
Many say it was a clash of heads or accidental, well where were the cuts or damage on Evander?? He had none bc he caused them w his big head. Look how low he would get his head when they would hug, and he’s taller than Mike. Even Lennox Lewis complained about the butts. He said he visited Evander’s gym once and saw a tire around his punching bag right around the head area, indicating he would actually practice head-butting. Luckily Lewis was able to take down Holyfield on the second fight even though he should’ve won the first.

One of the most depressing moments in my younger days was watching Mike loss against Buster Douglas. We all knew the moment he stepped in the ring he was in trouble. He just went through a divorce with Robin G and you could just tell he had lost that killer edge like... It was like he didn't even care. Supposedly he was warned against marrying her from a lot of people.
I remember that night. My friend was watching the fight while I was on the phone in another room because I figured it would be another quick knockout. Once my boy yelled that Tyson got knocked down I was in shock but probably not as much anyone watching it. That seriously hurt

The most dynamic boxer I have ever seen, in his prime. A very skilled boxer who had lightning quick hands, combined with explosive power and an iron chin. He could just come straight through any defense. Later got beat by powerful very skilled technique, but in his prime I don't believe even that would have worked, even agains Ali.
Mike Tyson throughout his prime years just had the power of gods!!!… those gloves just hit you with such force it just seems out of this world how someone could be so strong…

Tyson was so fast and so powerful as a boxer. That fast wasn't just throwing punches, but slipping and evaded ones. For all his flaws, and the arguable points of him not beating certain guys. Ordering ppv back in the day at school meant it was a crowd funding event at our frat house. Biggest complaint, it was sometimes a few minute fight for the main card. Poor at school, it was significant. But those fights were incredible. The guy was unbelievable. I mean you can argue many points about tyson and his career. But the guy was so fast, with a ton of power behind it.

My brother had an interview with Mike Tyson about two or three weeks before he got arrested for being the phx serial shooter. The fbi went over to the gym where he was working out and questioned him. I know this because I am the oldest brother in my family. What a tragedy for everyone involved.😢

When I was young I met Mike on a plane ride to either steamboat springs/ Vail Colorado are or Jackson hole Wyoming I'm not sure I was too young to remember which one but he had a leather duster with a matching hat and my dad was the same age and a huge Tyson fan. He sat right next to us on the plane and talked to my dad the whole flight.. Good man.

Tyson, with that peek-a-boo style he learned from Cus D'Amato and Kevin Rooney, coupled with his ability to summon instant power and aggression, was the most exciting and intimidating fighter of my lifetime. However, I think Ali would likely have gotten in his head and beaten him, much the way he did Foreman in Zaire. Regardless, the 70's and 80's was a great time to be alive.

You are so right, boxing in the 60’s to the late 80’s was probably the best time for heavyweights! After that it truly went downhill! No one with heart and never 4 or 5 guys all in their prime beating the hell out of each other like they did during those glory years!
The only reason Holyfield ever beat Tyson was because Tyson wasn’t in tip top shape, not trained properly and Holyfield was a master cheater using his head as a third fist except that it would cut people! Tyson couldn’t take it!

Tyson is one year older than myself. Me and my freinds watched each and every Tyson fight. I won some serious moolah too. Big bank in his early career and decent later on. After he'd eviscerated so many top fighters it was difficult to win a lot unless the bet was by KO in a specific round, after the 2nd round. But still possible to match your bet + a few extra shillings. 😁

Tyson changed all the rules ... Height and Reach went by the wayside... Tyson's height actually was an advantage against much taller opponents.. This match shows this perfectly.. If Tyson ever got close enough and cornered someone his very short uppercuts using his shoulders for strength was his best weapon... He basically hit you with his shoulders verses his arms where the power is multiplied in those compact uppercuts .... Tyson was a perfect storm of power, tactics and most dangerous thing of all _+_ his attitude .......Muhammad Ali would not have had a chance vs young Tyson ....

The ironic thing about Mike Tyson's fights was that, with few exceptions, he would go back and check on his beaten opponents to see if they were OK! I always found that to be out of character, considering how badly he had beaten then up!

In my humble opinion, Tyson's greatest moments and perhaps greatest contributions to society have come AFTER his final fight.
As much as I despised the man for his viciousness, there was always a heart of gold... but you had to dig for it.

I followed Tyson's career beginning when he was on ESPN. I was impressed, but there were questions about his chin, stamina, and ability to win decisions.
