Watching a Tyson fight back then was bigger than the Super Bowl to me. Everyone watched Tyson fight, even people that didn't even watch boxing watched. With Tyson fighting you didn't have to even think about was it going to be worth paying for the fight. Tyson always put on a masterpiece.

No doubt he was one of a kind. Because of the time difference over here in the UK the fights were not normally on until about 4 in the morning (Vegas fights) so I would crawl in from the pub, stay up to watch his fight, normally about two minutes if you were lucky and then off to bed. Luckily in the days before pay per view over here so did not cost anything but certainly worth it. Still like watching the NFL and SB but the boxing is no way near as good as Tyson's era.
Ppl need to realize how dangerous Iron Mike Tyson really was! And, had it not been for the distractions outside the ring, the death of his manager, and lack of training, really, no training to the fighters he lost to, He'd be the goat over Ali and possibly retired undefeated. Dude was just that good...💪

When I was young and watched these fights, it seemed as if Tyson just destroyed people…which he did. But now that I am older I see how incredibly tough and courageous all his opponents were. They overcame a lot of fear to be in that ring with him.
Mike would only have to give me THAT stare in the middle of the ring with the ref at the start and you wouldn't see my arse for dust, I'd be outta there..!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Took Tyson less than 2 hours of total ring time to defeat everyone, win all three belts and become the undisputed world boxing champion! This young man achieved this before he was old enough to buy alcohol! Boxing fans, like myself who experienced this in real time know Tyson is by far the greatest boxer EVER! They used to say if you had tickets to a Tyson fight don't waste money paying for parking just leave your car running at venue entrance because you'll be back in 5 mins! 😃😄😃

Tyson is known by many for having the first round and one punch knockouts, but how about these guys that take MANY of his knockout punches, and sledgehammer body shots, yet STILL go rounds with him? That shit is impressive.

A guy at nineteen is a kid. Tyson at nineteen was a beast and a wrecking machine fighting with 6'4" men and destroying them to pieces. The youngest ever heavyweight world champion at 20, this record will never be beaten.
After looking back on all of these, I'm impressed with Ribalta more than any other Tyson's opponents he beat early on. How did that guy take those shots for 10 rounds? Unreal.
Ribalta was running on adrenaline and mind chatter trying to convince himself, “Nobody has that much speed & power”...After Tyson made a name for himself, half of his opponents were psyched out before they stepped into the ring.😉

I love Tyson's footwork, so fast and precise, always keeping him in a position to put his body into his punches and to avoid big shots. For a fighter so busy with his punches, he was hard to hit cleanly.

You have to admire Tyson's speed and power. What is truly amazing is his footwork and his movement. His placement of his punches echoed from where he was positioned, the power and speed just amplified it.
@@Radrook353 He faced Holyfield after his stint in prison. Though still dangerous, post-prison Tyson was just never the same monster as his early 20s counterpart. Holyfield wouldn't have stood a chance against 20-year-old Mike.
I always wonder if modern fighters could figure it out and counter punch his aggressiveness. Back then they were all just overwhelmed and at times scared. I feel like today Tyson’s reckless style would get him knocked out here and there. Maybe…idk. Lol Mike is my all time fav boxer hands down, so I’m just speculating. I remember watching every single Tyson fight and remembering that it was a must to start watching well before the match started because it often only lasted a minute or two. Nobody was in his League in the 80’s! He could end careers with that uppercut of his!

What most people don't give Tyson credit for is his impeccable defensive skills moving forward. I've never seen anyone evade an attack while stepping into them quite like Mike. He had incredible ring intelligence and masterful timing In his attack though, his power really came from his legs, squatting down before generating tremendous force driving from his feet, legs, hips and shoulders. His fists were just the messenger. He often threw the least amount of punches but landed so many of the ones he did throw making him one of the most accurate hitters ever By the way, regardless what the judges said Tyson won that Roy Jones jr fight 😑
One moment comes to mind..in the 1st rd against Berbick, Tyson slipped probably one of the fastest, heaviest left hooks I've ever seen thrown. Incredibly difficult to even land a punch on him in his early years...he was so damn good.

The bums card to he lost in the 90's to greats. But its all opinions and not relevant to his outstanding record. All fighters don't defeat the top boxer's of their era. That doesn't diminish their achievements. A 50-6 record in the Heavyweight division is no small achievement. No excuses, a successful boxing record amongst Legends is valid. Total respect to any fighter brave enough to get into a ring with him - in his prime, he was frightening ! Astonishing hand speed, tremendous head movement and footwork all made it very difficult to hit him back, and, at the same time, generated devastating power. Before the fight started, his death stare was truly chilling. From the first bell, he's straight up and at 'em, in their face - relentless, merciless, utterly savage, until the job's done. The beatings suffered by Thomas, Biggs and Ruddock were especially brutal, even by Tyson's standards. He wasn't a boxer - he was a black hearted assassin !
Respect to Ribalta for having stood back up and come back to the fight after taking the beating and brutal punches he took. Many would have faked KO to stop earlier. My God I would not want to be his neurons… but he clearly is very courageous.
Recently, I read a post from someone who said that Mike was one of the few fighters Ali said he would not want to mix it up with. So that's a hell of compliment to Tyson!!!
I was born in 1961. I remember the 'controversy' of Cassius Clay becoming Muhammad Ali. My dad, a boxing fan, born in 1921, who knew the guys from the Great Era, Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Marcel Cerdan, Rocky Marciano, let me stay up to watch the fights between Frazier, Forman, Norton, Clay/Ali. The Rumble In The Jungle. The Thrilla In Manila. I did a bit of boxing myself. Some French boxing (Savate) too. But I was too lazy to excersise properly. Relying on my natural speed and very hard punch. I destroyed a boxing machine once at a local fairground. But that ain't enough to make it as a pro, or even as an amateur. Watching Mike Tyson in the eighties, I didn't really like him. Too much of an animal. No real boxer, I thought. Just a lion jumping at its prey. Kept clawing until the prey was conquered. Later, rewatching some of his bouts, I came to realise that Tyson was close to a genius. Maybe without realising it himself. The talent, the intelligence, the movement, the speed, the punch, the determination, the rage. He had the best parts of all the great boxers who came before him. And at the time, because of an unsimpathetic press, he wasn't seen for what he was. Misjudged, mis-interpreted, misunderstood, miscast and even outcast. Today, I see him for what he is and has always been. A Great Man and after Ali, the best boxer to ever walk this planet. And I like him. For what he was and for what he is today. Respect.

I believe that IF Cus hadn’t have passed away when he did, and Mike hadn’t have parted company with Kevin Rooney, he would’ve undoubtably been an immense force in the Heavyweight division, and possibly becoming THE Greatest of all time. People overlook the fact that we never got a "prime" version of Tyson. He was a kid, still learning a lot about the game, and very much a student of the sport when he was thrust into the title picture at 19-20 years old. Then as champion, was manipulated by a villainous and greedy woman, and another even more despicable man in Don King, who led to him firing his corner and believing himself invincible. At age 23, he goes to prison for 4.5 years, (somehow) ends up back with Don King, and has tomato cans lined up in front of him before facing Evander Holyfield. Tyson had no interest in taking fighting seriously after the age of 21, and would mostly headhunt in the fights instead of displaying his tactical combinations and body shots. Ali gave away prime years for being a coward about the draft, and was forgiven with an asterisk when he lost to Joe Frazier and Ken Norton (all three times, but was gifted two illegitimate wins). Tyson had far more obstacles in his situation, yet was laughed at for losing to Holyfield and declared a never-was. So when Tyson should have been giving us his "prime" from 23-30 or so, he was instead wasting his time, his talents, his money, and his freedom with bad people and prison. It was a case of perhaps the most wasted talent in sports history. And yet he STILL was as impressive as he was, and perhaps the most memorable heavyweight champ of all-time because of the way he fought. SIDE NOTE: He also wasn't a slugger who got tired after 4 rounds as some have claimed, as evidenced by the fact that fights with Ribalta, Ruddock, Green, and others, he was still as fast and powerful in round 10 as he was in round 1. The guy had the work ethic and fitness in his early days to go the whole way. It was always about his motivation, not his fitness.

For me, the real tragedy about Mike is how society and the media painted the picture of him being vicious or a monster. True, he was an aggressive athlete but he was so humble in the beginning. Always respectful of his opponents after the fight. After Cus died he didn't have the direction or discipline to keep him straight and life whipped his azz. There was nobody to tell him no. Add to that going to jail for a crime you didn't commit and that sweet humble young man became cold and calloused. I am a fan 4life; he is an amazing athlete. Watching him in the ring was awe inspiring even though you knew it was only gonna last a couple rounds, if that. The sport of boxing owes him a tribute.

Mike is a legend, no matter what. He absorbed what his coach taught him. Cus D'Amato, his legacy remains till today through Mike Tyson. One sentence: Mike, both loved him and feared him. What a wonderful relationship! They were inseparable.
It's the advantage of his build, coordination, strength and athletic ability. He had the speed to get inside quickly, threw insanely fast combinations with short powerful arms and had KO power in both hands. If he couldn't do that......he was in trouble. At that point, he actually had to think his way through a fight and reach down deep to win. Many times he couldn't(or wouldn't even try to) find a way to win. That kept him from being great. But he was still a very unique heavyweight that was as exciting as any heavyweight in history. Couldn't wait to see a Tyson fight in the late 80s!
@oddity21 I don't get why people think that was true. There was two versions of Tyson. The fighter, before prison, and the one after. He went the distance against a very tough fighter in (34-0) Tony Tucker. Once Tyson figured out that the guy wasn't going to succumb to his aggressive style, Tyson adapted to out-boxing him for the decision. Tyson very much adapted his game plan for that fight, when he couldn't overpower Tucker.

Tyson was pressing in the 1st round, got stunned by an uppercut, but stayed aggressive with Tucker holding onto Tyson, anytime he got hit. The second round led to Tyson working the body and then going to the head. He was getting the better of Tucker, but kept himself in check from leaving his chin open. About round 6 is when Tyson got on his bicycle and started working the jab to great affect. Tucker had landed a abysmal 22% of his jabs by the 4th round and by the 8th Tyson had landed 76% of his. Tyson was straight up working his jab and wearing Tucker down. Tyson stayed patient and hunkered down for the long haul. He's not one dimensional like Deontay Wilder.

This video did an outstanding job illustrating Mike's ability to fight his way inside the bigger opponents and use his speed and power to get them out. Mike's 2 best fights in my opinion are his fights with Donovan "Razor" Ruddock. Mike proved in those 2 fights that he had an excellent chin and could still fight at an extremely high level despite the loss of Kevin Rooney as trainer. Mike was the best and I was very lucky to get the opportunity to grow up watching him.
Excellent chin? Are you kidding? Maybe in the late 1980s and early 1990s (a weak heavyweight period) he had successes against cherry picked fairly weak opponents (aging Holmes, Spinks, Birbeck) to add to his myth; no doubt. Then out of prison he came into the golden age of heavyweight bouts. He couldn’t hack it and resorted to biting and breaking arms. A weak mental fighter and that was his downfall. But enjoy all the big slugs against the weak opponents all you like…
Gotta agree.. Tyson showed a lot in those two fights.. That, when he trains hard and is focused in on his opponent, he can go all 12 rounds and not look tired.. Like he did against Busta Douglas, Evander Holyfield, and others he lost to.. I don't think they would've out boxed Tyson had he trained

Most of us are barely a year or two removed from high school working at Mcjobs.. and this guy was on the path to being a world champ at 20.
He had the intimidation of Liston, the speed of Ali, the endurance of Marciano, but most of all his own impatience, which turned out to be his weakness. He hated the ring bell. He was in a race with time. He was so good he depreciated boxing in general. Most opponents look like they're thrown in the lion's cage.
Don King in his later years was his "weakness" King wanted him fighting as often as he did when he was younger (King Greed) but of course his trainers new he needed a little extra time between fights to rest and train for the next fighter but King wouldn't have it . Hence inner turmoil between King and Mikes' trainers , Mike lost his Long time (from the beginning) trainers and his "weakness" began ! Don't be a know it all , I was from CATSKILL NY , LIVED THERE FOR MANY YEARS AND YES , WHEN MIKE WAS THERE !
Just imagine if Cus would have been around for 5 or 6 more years? As it is Mike is an awe inspiring example of what a human being is capable of. Even more amazing is the wonderful person Mike has become since those early days, God bless him and his family.
I guess I choose to not judge Mike on is mistakes when he was in his 20s. I honestly don't know how I would have done had I gone from absolute poverty to incredible wealth and notoriety in my 20s with no family or mentors to help me make wise decisions. I for one can admit that I was far from perfect when I was in my 20s and I had a rather "normal" life. I have watched him turn into a very thoughtful honest and seemingly compassionate man. It seems he has found success and happiness. So I say Good for him!

I know how to work a heavy bag, speed bag and double end bag. I know how to throw a jab, left hook, uppercut and straight right. I moved so was forced to give it up. I'm no professional by any definition but I do know the sweet science. As crazy as this may sound what I miss the most is the smell and the sound of fists hitting bags. I remember watching every single Tyson fight and remembering that it was a must to start watching well before the match started because it often only lasted a minute or two. Nobody was in his League in the 80’s! He could end careers with that uppercut of his!

In his attack though, his power really came from his legs, squatting down before generating tremendous force driving from his feet, legs, hips and shoulders. His fists were just the messenger. He often threw the least amount of punches but landed so many of the ones he did throw making him one of the most accurate hitters ever

One moment comes to mind..in the 1st rd against Berbick, Tyson slipped probably one of the fastest, heaviest left hooks I've ever seen thrown. Incredibly difficult to even land a punch on him in his early years...he was so damn good.

Total respect to any fighter brave enough to get into a ring with him - in his prime, he was frightening ! Astonishing hand speed, tremendous head movement and footwork all made it very difficult to hit him back, and, at the same time, generated devastating power.
Before the fight started, his death stare was truly chilling. From the first bell, he's straight up and at 'em, in their face - relentless, merciless, utterly savage, until the job's done. The beatings suffered by Thomas, Biggs and Ruddock were especially brutal, even by Tyson's standards.

Recently, I read a post from someone who said that Mike was one of the few fighters Ali said he would not want to mix it up with. So that's a hell of compliment to Tyson!!!
I was born in 1961. I remember the 'controversy' of Cassius Clay becoming Muhammad Ali. My dad, a boxing fan, born in 1921, who knew the guys from the Great Era, Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Marcel Cerdan, Rocky Marciano, let me stay up to watch the fights between Frazier, Forman, Norton, Clay/Ali. The Rumble In The Jungle. The Thrilla In Manila. I did a bit of boxing myself. Some French boxing (Savate) too. But I was too lazy to excersise properly. Relying on my natural speed and very hard punch. I destroyed a boxing machine once at a local fairground. But that ain't enough to make it as a pro, or even as an amateur.
Watching Mike Tyson in the eighties, I didn't really like him. Too much of an animal. No real boxer, I thought. Just a lion jumping at its prey. Kept clawing until the prey was conquered.
Later, rewatching some of his bouts, I came to realise that Tyson was close to a genius. Maybe without realising it himself. The talent, the intelligence, the movement, the speed, the punch, the determination, the rage. He had the best parts of all the great boxers who came before him. And at the time, because of an unsimpathetic press, he wasn't seen for what he was. Misjudged, mis-interpreted, misunderstood, miscast and even outcast.
Today, I see him for what he is and has always been. A Great Man and after Ali, the best boxer to ever walk this planet. And I like him. For what he was and for what he is today. Respect.

People overlook the fact that we never got a "prime" version of Tyson. He was a kid, still learning a lot about the game, and very much a student of the sport when he was thrust into the title picture at 19-20 years old. Then as champion, was manipulated by a villainous and greedy woman, and another even more despicable man in Don King, who led to him firing his corner and believing himself invincible. At age 23, he goes to prison for 4.5 years, (somehow) ends up back with Don King, and has tomato cans lined up in front of him before facing Evander Holyfield. Tyson had no interest in taking fighting seriously after the age of 21, and would mostly headhunt in the fights instead of displaying his tactical combinations and body shots.
Ali gave away prime years for being a coward about the draft, and was forgiven with an asterisk when he lost to Joe Frazier and Ken Norton (all three times, but was gifted two illegitimate wins). Tyson had far more obstacles in his situation, yet was laughed at for losing to Holyfield and declared a never-was.
So when Tyson should have been giving us his "prime" from 23-30 or so, he was instead wasting his time, his talents, his money, and his freedom with bad people and prison. It was a case of perhaps the most wasted talent in sports history. And yet he STILL was as impressive as he was, and perhaps the most memorable heavyweight champ of all-time because of the way he fought. SIDE NOTE: He also wasn't a slugger who got tired after 4 rounds as some have claimed, as evidenced by the fact that fights with Ribalta, Ruddock, Green, and others, he was still as fast and powerful in round 10 as he was in round 1. The guy had the work ethic and fitness in his early days to go the whole way. It was always about his motivation, not his fitness.
Ali was not a coward in any sense of the word is the only exception I would make to your statement. He did not see the purpose in going to Vietnam and he had no grudge with Vietnamese people and he didn’t really believe in the domino theory or the greater geopolitical game.

For me, the real tragedy about Mike is how society and the media painted the picture of him being vicious or a monster. True, he was an aggressive athlete but he was so humble in the beginning. Always respectful of his opponents after the fight. After Cus died he didn't have the direction or discipline to keep him straight and life whipped his azz. There was nobody to tell him no. Add to that going to jail for a crime you didn't commit and that sweet humble young man became cold and calloused. I am a fan 4life; he is an amazing athlete. Watching him in the ring was awe inspiring even though you knew it was only gonna last a couple rounds, if that. The sport of boxing owes him a tribute.
Imagine being the current heavyweight champion of the world & in your next fight you are considered the underdog against and up-and-coming newcomer... That's how good Mike Tyson was!

Mike is a legend, no matter what. He absorbed what his coach taught him. Cus D'Amato, his legacy remains till today through Mike Tyson. One sentence: Mike, both loved him and feared him. What a wonderful relationship! They were inseparable.

It's the advantage of his build, coordination, strength and athletic ability. He had the speed to get inside quickly, threw insanely fast combinations with short powerful arms and had KO power in both hands. If he couldn't do that......he was in trouble. At that point, he actually had to think his way through a fight and reach down deep to win. Many times he couldn't(or wouldn't even try to) find a way to win. That kept him from being great. But he was still a very unique heavyweight that was as exciting as any heavyweight in history. Couldn't wait to see a Tyson fight in the late 80s!
@oddity21 I don't get why people think that was true. There was two versions of Tyson. The fighter, before prison, and the one after. He went the distance against a very tough fighter in (34-0) Tony Tucker. Once Tyson figured out that the guy wasn't going to succumb to his aggressive style, Tyson adapted to out-boxing him for the decision. Tyson very much adapted his game plan for that fight, when he couldn't overpower Tucker.

That's not what happened in that fight.
Tyson was pressing in the 1st round, got stunned by an uppercut, but stayed aggressive with Tucker holding onto Tyson, anytime he got hit.
The second round led to Tyson working the body and then going to the head. He was getting the better of Tucker, but kept himself in check from leaving his chin open.
About round 6 is when Tyson got on his bicycle and started working the jab to great affect. Tucker had landed a abysmal 22% of his jabs by the 4th round and by the 8th Tyson had landed 76% of his.
Tyson was straight up working his jab and wearing Tucker down. Tyson stayed patient and hunkered down for the long haul. He's not one dimensional like Deontay Wilder.

This video did an outstanding job illustrating Mike's ability to fight his way inside the bigger opponents and use his speed and power to get them out. Mike's 2 best fights in my opinion are his fights with Donovan "Razor" Ruddock. Mike proved in those 2 fights that he had an excellent chin and could still fight at an extremely high level despite the loss of Kevin Rooney as trainer. Mike was the best and I was very lucky to get the opportunity to grow up watching him.
Excellent chin? Are you kidding? Maybe in the late 1980s and early 1990s (a weak heavyweight period) he had successes against cherry picked fairly weak opponents (aging Holmes, Spinks, Birbeck) to add to his myth; no doubt. Then out of prison he came into the golden age of heavyweight bouts. He couldn’t hack it and resorted to biting and breaking arms. A weak mental fighter and that was his downfall.
But enjoy all the big slugs against the weak opponents all you like…
Gotta agree.. Tyson showed a lot in those two fights.. That, when he trains hard and is focused in on his opponent, he can go all 12 rounds and not look tired.. Like he did against Busta Douglas, Evander Holyfield, and others he lost to.. I don't think they would've out boxed Tyson had he trained

Most of us are barely a year or two removed from high school working at Mcjobs.. and this guy was on the path to being a world champ at 20.

He had the intimidation of Liston, the speed of Ali, the endurance of Marciano, but most of all his own impatience, which turned out to be his weakness. He hated the ring bell. He was in a race with time. He was so good he depreciated boxing in general. Most opponents look like they're thrown in the lion's cage.

Don King in his later years was his "weakness" King wanted him fighting as often as he did when he was younger (King Greed) but of course his trainers new he needed a little extra time between fights to rest and train for the next fighter but King wouldn't have it . Hence inner turmoil between King and Mikes' trainers , Mike lost his Long time (from the beginning) trainers and his "weakness" began ! Don't be a know it all , I was from CATSKILL NY , LIVED THERE FOR MANY YEARS AND YES , WHEN MIKE WAS THERE !

I guess I choose to not judge Mike on is mistakes when he was in his 20s. I honestly don't know how I would have done had I gone from absolute poverty to incredible wealth and notoriety in my 20s with no family or mentors to help me make wise decisions. I for one can admit that I was far from perfect when I was in my 20s and I had a rather "normal" life. I have watched him turn into a very thoughtful honest and seemingly compassionate man. It seems he has found success and happiness. So I say Good for him!

I know how to work a heavy bag, speed bag and double end bag. I know how to throw a jab, left hook, uppercut and straight right. I moved so was forced to give it up. I'm no professional by any definition but I do know the sweet science. As crazy as this may sound what I miss the most is the smell and the sound of fists hitting bags. Hardest thing I've ever undertaken. U don't gotta believe me, it don't make any difference either way. Some are stronger than others but there is trained and untrained. What i meant was it wasn't raw anymore. It was finely tuned power. He had natural power. Same meaning just different way of explaining it is all. What weight class were U? U turn pro?

I love the early version of Mike Tyson when he loved the craft. Then came a period after prison where he was full of hate and rage. A very dark period in his life, that signaled his downfall as a man. Now I can say in full confidence, today's version of a humble man is even greater.
