  • I tackle a common problem with aftermarket CV axles involving the retaining ring. Many times this ring will be misshapen or to large in diameter, causing the axle to not slide into the differential/transaxle.

    Sad you should have to effectively anneal the temper right out of the end of the axle (not a good idea in general), but given the absolute lack of quality control in parts now, it's probably the least bad solution out there. And it's not just aftermarket parts that are junk now, even OEM is going downhill. Thanks for sharing your approach.

    I really didn't think you were going to help me. But this is the trick I used to make the circlip a little bit smaller. It still has tension and didn't slide right in. But now it fits and it didn't before.

    Did help abit had an aftermarket with an odd notched ring, but even with this i could not push it in.
    So i took a risk and used a long wood piece and a hammer lightly tap the inner axel outer flat area against the boot 6 light taps and it locked....wood is nice
    Dame impossible as 1 person it acted like a spring.

    • @LA_Commander
      @LA_Commander Před 3 lety

      It would probably be okay to drive, considering the hub assembly, the retaining nut, the tie rod end, the sway bar end link, and the strut assembly all work together to hold it in. Many cars do not have this C clip. Some do. But it's more of a safety device in case all the other components which hold it in fail at the same time.

    • @LehewTech
      @LehewTech  Před 3 lety +2

      The clip is absolutely necessary in order for the axle stub to be secure in the transmission/differential assembly.

    • @antonherres7112
      @antonherres7112 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@LehewTech how does it secure the axle in when you install it you push it in or pull the old out with the ring in place. You don't install the clip after installing the axle, it's in there when you shove the axle in. So how it hold the axle when a slight tug makes it come out

    • @filonin2
      @filonin2 Před 2 lety +6

      The stub axle is too large to get heated significantly by a torch over such a short period. The stub would have to get over 1300f. The reason it works on the snap ring is because it is 1/1000th the mass of the axle and so it heats up quite fast.

    • @tetrabromobisphenol
      @tetrabromobisphenol Před rokem

      @@filonin2 Not true my guy. Look at the color of the stub before and after. The surface turns blue from formation of oxides above 300 C. And because that retaining ring groove is only say 0.060" deep, alot of the material associated with it has now had the temper adversely affected. Just because the core hardness doesn't change does not imply the performance of the part isn't affected.
