  • Another piece from a 1989 project, this time a brief look at a couple of freight trains operating in Tasmania at the time.
Was shot on 3/4 inch U-matic / BVU then transferred to and edited on Betacam SP.
Unfortunately the last couple of minutes are dodgy as something has happened to the master tape in the 30 years it has been in storage, and the whereabouts of the original field tapes or the SP tapes is not known so it cant be fixed :-(

Those were the days, 1987 1998, hang out Friday night at EAST Tamar signal box (bugger all to do in Launceston) and get a cab ride to Bell Bay and a bit of a 'steering back to Launceston or down to Conara Junction at one in the morning. Just wear a green pair of overalls to blend in.. A cab ride 'over the Billycock ' to Herrick on the North East 'goat track'. 7:45

Thx again Mots. It was hard work with the big old 3/4 inch U-matic gear.

Tassie shot themselves in the foot by not going standard gauge during the Australian National tenure, lot of missed opportunities. A standard gauge link with the mainland via the ferry service would have been beneficial. Those EBR loco's look like the PTC of NSW former 73 class, also built by Walkers. Cannot beat that countryside, simply stunning.

If only the whole country was standard gauge!
Interestingly, you prompted a memory of having read something years ago about a roll on roll off rail ferry service. It was some kind of assessment document, tho not detailed. I cant recall how it addressed the gauge issue tho.

An interesting period piece, well done with artistic angles and good sound track. The technical problems in the last four minutes are unfortunate, looks a bit surreal with the split scene parts.

Those 'Rail Revival' vids are from the first semi serious piece I did. It was shot on 3/4 inch Umatic/BVU gear then transferred to Betacam Sp for editing. I had considerable help from professionals to whom I will always remain extremely grateful, and learnt a lot which helped me for future projects. But it was hard work lugging that big old gear around!
