It is my belief of underestimating these terms - confusing Guilt and Shame - guilt says I “did” wrong and shame says I “am” wrong. There is no healthy shame - there is healthy guilt - that’s is what you described with the brakes. There is unhealthy guilt, but that a whole different issue also.
I really enjoyed this talk and it is so needed!! Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the quote at the beginning. I cannot express how validating it was. I recently read a quote from a rabbi in a book of commentary on the weekly Haftors that explained depression away as if it were a choice; a bad one. I was so shocked and hurt by this that I couldn't read any further in the book even though I had appreciated it until then. The fact that the author had chosen to print this quote felt like a betrayal.

i have heard this in the past not that long ago a mother had hatzala by her home for some type of mental illness that went out of control. she stated to hatzala she is perfectly ok staying home and not going to a psychiatric ward and die at home rather then going and the reason is because then her children will be yesomim and other people will be okay marrying them. but on the other hand if she does go everyone will find out why and her kids wont stand a chance for shiduchim. and its so true and accurate. yet if we continue down this path we ended up having a case like one we dont want to think of in lakewood. thats the result of shame embarrassment, misunderstanding and letting it go on till there is emergency. then it gets much harder to treat. may hashem help us to unravel this misunderstanding and empower us to do what is good and healthy.

    respectfully, rabbi taub,
the rabbi explains that our jewish community is suffering from emotional issues due to the holocaust etc. My question is , but why then are the same emotional challenges being seen among non jews , across the western world too ?!
