Wow. I listen to this and I'm whisked back to university in 1980-something, it's 2 AM in the darkroom with this on my cassette player, pulling prints from 4x5 negatives for a presentation, smoking a joint with the one or two others there...good times.
Still one of the best albums in my (1000+) vinyl album. I still play tracks from it 30+ years later, Tracey is one of the greatest under-rated and missed out artistes of the modern age (IMHO)
First heard this on the Pillows and Prayers album I bought in 1982. Still have it in the cellophane wrapping. Seem to recall is was only 1.99p as a special offer. Happy days!
One of the most underrated indie pop records of all time, a hidden gem for sure, even with Tracey Thorn's subsequent success this never retrospectively became a renowned album, it's a shame, but I'm happy that out of the thousands upon thousand of hidden gems destiny lead me to this one
I hadn't heard this song for at least 25 years (the album is in a box in a lockup back in my hometown - long story)...and yet on hearing it again it was instantly familiar.... "old enough to know there's no such thing." (means a bit more at 55 than 25 ;)
Love it, wish someone would post the PILLOWS version! Oh well, to quote another femme fatale, "Why ask for the moon when we already have the stars"....
Actually Tracy Thorn and George Michael lived near each other in North London and were really good friends. Personally I have always thought that Tracy Thorn was very underrated. Deserved a lot more success. Her voice is stunning.
Meetings arranged, they say, never work out I’d say we’ve proved them wrong without doubt I can’t remember now just what we said I never could have guessed what lay ahead As I ran towards you up the stairs Did a voice in my ear cry “Beware”? Even now I’m surprised to recall Such a short time it took me to fall Pretending that my heart still lay elsewhere When in truth I had long ceased to care For what I thought I’d never replace Till in my heart you left him no space You say you wonder what was it I saw I say “Oh, I don’t recall any more” My first impressions have been left behind Replaced now by feelings and more lost in kind Sure that you know but you never can tell When I think I understand you so well Shakes me that you were a constant surprise Or so you appear in my eyes Tempting to think now it will all be plain sailing Old enough now to know there’s no such thing
I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only just discovered Tracey Thorn, but thankful that I have!
Takes me back. Such wonderful challenging and often sad times being younger. Here I am now at 50 but close eyes and travel back for 3 minutes 🤗

This song never fails to hit hard, tremendous lyrics as true now as when they were originally written

Hmm and her biggest mistake in my opinion was to team up with her lover ben watt as everything but the girl
No question about it.
Me encantan ' Everything but the girl....y ambos en solitario...también mucho..Greetings from Spain.@@brianvonnazareth8248

Ah the nostalgia is strong in this one.

This track accompanied me throughout my university years, 1984-1988. Sussex Uni. Halcyon days for sure.
I love this song very melancholic and smooth, just what I needed tonight. 👌🏽😌
I still own this single from back in the day
And I still cherish is lovingly
Takes me back to my 80s student days.
Innocent days, full of hope !
Beautiful Song!!!
I first heard it pillows and prayer

one of the best tracks ever
that album and North marine drive of Ben Watt were so good .
Loved both of those so much . . And that they were together made it even more special 💕
“Old enough now to know there’s no such thing”
Tempting to think it will all be plain sailing. Old enough now to know theres no such thing.
Takes me back to my old college days in Thame. Watching it rain and just being a bit lonely...happy days.
Masterpiece
A magic tune and no mistakes.
Tracey's blessed with the best singing voice. Love it.
Used to cover this back in the early 80's,got it from a brilliant album I had on picture disc called 'Pillows and prayers.
First herd it in the 80's on Annie Nightingale's Sunday afternoon
show on Radio 2,
Great song.😊
Amazing songs !!!
What a great album this is...
still on heavy rotation at my house !
Such a nostalgic voice, as soon as I hear it I look back at a different time, maybe with a bit of rose tintedness though.
que linda no la había escuchado no podía ser diferente tratándose de Tracey 💜
haven't heard this for a few years still is a stunning track
All personal of course but to me one of the greatest tracks ever .
Si triste et si beau à la fois.
Terrific LP and a beautiful memory of Zoe at Uni in Sheffield …
Oh god pillows n prayers and my first girlfriend

Summed it up beautifully....
as someone going through this right now i hope you feel better knowing some things haven’t changed since 1982
... I love having a good feel now and again.

It might date me, but this song never dates!

No, really. An interview with George Michael and Morrissey brought me here.

Apparently Kurt Cobain was a massive fan. (Seriously).
@@chrisparkin9947 of the marine girls....
It's just a really good song. The End.
Someone knows when this song was released (month and year)?
I think it's in 1982, but which period ?
Thank you.
@easychord1

Meetings arranged, they say, never work out
I’d say we’ve proved them wrong without doubt
I can’t remember now just what we said
I never could have guessed what lay ahead
As I ran towards you up the stairs
Did a voice in my ear cry “Beware”?
Even now I’m surprised to recall
Such a short time it took me to fall
Pretending that my heart still lay elsewhere
When in truth I had long ceased to care
For what I thought I’d never replace
Till in my heart you left him no space
You say you wonder what was it I saw
I say “Oh, I don’t recall any more”
My first impressions have been left behind
Replaced now by feelings and more lost in kind
Sure that you know but you never can tell
When I think I understand you so well
Shakes me that you were a constant surprise
Or so you appear in my eyes
Tempting to think now it will all be plain sailing
Old enough now to know there’s no such thing
