I like Colbert, but I love Maher. This arena doesn't suit Bill, he never seems to enjoy doing talk shows because for the most part he's a serious guy intertwined jokes in serious topics, but talk show hosts mainly focus on the laughs and any message is usually lost.

His humor doesn't have the mass appeal that a show like this requires. This interview was FASCINATING. Two very sharp comic minds, and it's clear there is some backstory here between these two because oh my, you can FEEL THE TENSION.

Yes, this really was fascinating! It was like talk shows before they were scripted. I would have thought the Colbert and Maher were budies, but whoa! They both have egos and strong beliefs, but I thought they'd be more agreeable. I only looked for this clip because it is apparently a legendary exchange in the annals of talk show history. Bill makes a lot of valid points, but just as Maher seems to have the wrong perception of Colbert's mock invitation inviting him to rejoin the Church, Colbert WAS right disputing Maher's theory that the Trump novelty would dwindle like a a blossoming relationship. Did Maher ever return to eat his Trump soup? Still, it makes for excellent and civilized yet amusing discourse. Very, very interesting stuff!

This is what sets Colbert and Stewart apart from Bill Maher the first two never took themselves too seriously while still being able to satire serious subjects, Maher cares too much about winning the argument to his own satisfaction and gives no room to us the audience to figure it out for ourselves

Colbert said his mom's faith helped her cope with that tragedy and helped her remaining kids to love life and not be bitter. Colbert is s a smart guy. I don't know if this was a "fight" But I think what happened is both of these guys are excellent political comedians and both are unused to sharing the stage with each other. Colbert in interviews is great exposing people who he has interviewed in the past for the inability to reason or making them look stupid. Well you can't do that to Bill Maher! And what really happened here wasn't because Maher is not religious and Stephen "Steve" is its because they have different comedic styles that don't really mesh well Stephen is all about subtle exposure and Maher is about shock. Both are great styles in their correct environment but they can't be used on each other. These men probably agree on near 100 percent of issues. Maher goes after Catholicism Colbert says he is not very good at it. See that's funny but Maher does not engage in playful banter and Colbert is not used to someone who doesn't or when they don't he is used to making the person "look stupid" which again he can't do with Bill Maher. So that means that Colbert comes across like he is being attacked or at least challenged when he isn't That's just the way Maher talks. This was really a "battle for attention" and a clash of conflicting comedic styles like both were vying for the attention of the audience to laugh at their chosen style of humor. I am sure after examining what happened both men would be like "What the hell happened?" and apologize if the other really did feel offended which was probably not the intention of either person

Bill is extremely cynical about religion so trying to get some light-hearted humor about it from him is not possible. Bill prefers to ridicule and offend rather than attempt to reason with religious people since that is not possible.

Its Me Colbert Report was nothing but politics for almost a decade and Stephen was(maybe still is) under Jon Stewart, so it's is very unlikely Maher thinks Colbert doesn't know about politics. Both are liberal but doesn't mean they agree on all subjects. Religion was one of them.

+Seth Perry I think it was a nurtured 'Bill O'Reilly' response from his last show, O'Reilly hangs back like that when he's starting to get into tough questions, including those about religion. He suddenly reverted to the same mannerisms, it just tells me that he doesn't take things too seriously, which is better.
I like Maher but he looooves to explain stuff, and never seems to understand that a conversation is about interacting, not monologuing away forever. Also, he's not that confortable around people who are funnier than him, like Colbert, the Bill Burr interview comes to mind as well....
+Charles Léveillé He's being interviewed. Have you ever been interviewed before? Its not supposed to be a balanced conversation. Colbert's job is really to make sure the conversation moves smoothly and in the right direction but the guest should be doing most of the talking. The point of the whole thing is to get information out of the guests. This was just a really awkward interview. Not well done on Colbert's part. He needs to shape up because Maher is hardly the toughest guest he'll ever get on this show. As far as their humor goes its a matter of style. Colbert appeals to the masses and his humor is alright for someone shooting for that large of a target. Maher on the other hand appeals to a specific niche of left of center political types. Those people watch him religiously (at least all the Maher viewers I know do) and they find him hilarious. Far funnier than Colbert could ever hope to be. But just for that niche. Maher would not do well on a variety show like the Late Show.

Yeah I know, I've seen interviews before. And usually when two smart people are in this context it's more of a discussion, think of the O'Reily/Letterman interviews. However, Maher likes to control the conversation and he does it on his show as well. And don't think I'm hating on Maher, as I said, I quite like him and have been watching real time for quite a while now...Just a thought.
He's kind of an asshole at times. Unironically, too. Pure unadulterated prick sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I can (usually) say more positive things about him than bad, but I still acknowledge he's very flawed. (I'm not saying this because I'm "offended" either. I concur that religion is stupid.)
This was absolutely one of the best exchanges between two Titans of Late Night television. Both are well-informed, comical, and cerebral entertainers, with a very acerbic interpretation of the political landscape. Amusing and accurate observations from both Bill and Stephen, which provide viewers with something tangible to contemplate.

This was tough. Stephen is the man, but he wouldn't let his serious guest finish any serious sentences. It's a comedy show I guess, but this could have been more productive I think if the host had handled it better.

For the most part, far more important than making a message heard, the comedian's goal is always to incite reaction from the audience. Bill makes a lot of valid points, but just as Maher seems to have the wrong perception of Colbert's mock invitation inviting him to rejoin the Church, Colbert WAS right disputing Maher's theory that the Trump novelty would dwindle like a a blossoming relationship. Did Maher ever return to eat his Trump soup? Still, it makes for excellent and civilized yet amusing discourse. Very, very interesting stuff!

I don't know if this was a "fight" But I think what happened is both of these guys are excellent political comedians and both are unused to sharing the stage with each other. Colbert in interviews is great exposing people who he has interviewed in the past for the inability to reason or making them look stupid. Well you can't do that to Bill Maher! And what really happened here wasn't because Maher is not religious and Stephen "Steve" is its because they have different comedic styles that don't really mesh well Stephen is all about subtle exposure and Maher is about shock. Both are great styles in their correct environment but they can't be used on each other. These men probably agree on near 100 percent of issues. Maher goes after Catholicism Colbert says he is not very good at it. See that's funny but Maher does not engage in playful banter and Colbert is not used to someone who doesn't or when they don't he is used to making the person "look stupid" which again he can't do with Bill Maher. So that means that Colbert comes across like he is being attacked or at least challenged when he isn't That's just the way Maher talks. This was really a "battle for attention" and a clash of conflicting comedic styles like both were vying for the attention of the audience to laugh at their chosen style of humor. I am sure after examining what happened both men would be like "What the hell happened?" and apologize if the other really did feel offended which was probably not the intention of either person

Bill is extremely cynical about religion so trying to get some light-hearted humor about it from him is not possible. Bill prefers to ridicule and offend rather than attempt to reason with religious people since that is not possible.

Its Me Colbert Report was nothing but politics for almost a decade and Stephen was(maybe still is) under Jon Stewart, so it's is very unlikely Maher thinks Colbert doesn't know about politics. Both are liberal but doesn't mean they agree on all subjects. Religion was one of them.

He suddenly reverted to the same mannerisms, it just tells me that he doesn't take things too seriously, which is better.
I like Maher but he looooves to explain stuff, and never seems to understand that a conversation is about interacting, not monologuing away forever. Also, he's not that confortable around people who are funnier than him, like Colbert, the Bill Burr interview comes to mind as well....

Colbert's job is really to make sure the conversation moves smoothly and in the right direction but the guest should be doing most of the talking. The point of the whole thing is to get information out of the guests. This was just a really awkward interview. Not well done on Colbert's part. He needs to shape up because Maher is hardly the toughest guest he'll ever get on this show.
As far as their humor goes its a matter of style. Colbert appeals to the masses and his humor is alright for someone shooting for that large of a target. Maher on the other hand appeals to a specific niche of left of center political types. Those people watch him religiously (at least all the Maher viewers I know do) and they find him hilarious. Far funnier than Colbert could ever hope to be. But just for that niche. Maher would not do well on a variety show like the Late Show.

This was absolutely one of the best exchanges between two Titans of Late Night television. Both are well-informed, comical, and cerebral entertainers, with a very acerbic interpretation of the political landscape. Colbert at his most hostile - very unlike him. Did he feel threatened around Bill Maher? Notice how he interrupts Maher constantly and doesn’t join in the applause for Maher by the audience.

This was tough. Stephen is the man, but he wouldn't let his serious guest finish any serious sentences. It's a comedy show I guess, but this could have been more productive I think if the host had handled it better.

+Sean Mugan Expecting a comedian, even if he's a political comedian, to make a progressive point on another comedian's show without expecting the other guy to chide in for reactions of the crowd is the mistake you made while watching this. For the most part, far more important than making a message heard, the comedian's goal is always to incite reaction from the audience. If you were expecting something else, with an interview of two comedians, well I don't know what to say.
+Sean Mugan Bill Maher has plenty of time to do his monologues on his own show. Here he was a guest on a comedy show. I think he was pissed that the Colonel had the serious segment of the show. Bill hates not being the smartest guy in the room, that's why he sucks as a comedian. Ever notice how he waits too long for laughs after every damn joke and the same for applause after making a point. He's vain.
I love both of these guys, but Bill Maher is smarter. And correct.
