  • Hi, after a short break I'm back with a new video!!!
    Is this video I try take off planes of all sizes at Saba airport, located in the Caribbean. The runway is just 400 metres (1,312 feet) long. So it's definitely challenging with big planes!!!
    Be sure to check out part 1 of this video: • CAN YOU LAND THE AN-22...

    The C17 was a nice add. I've flown on C17's many times. Those things are the Cadillac CTS-V of cargo planes.
    When doin tactical take off, they do what is called an Unrestricted Climb, and talk about your head being around your ankles when that happens... I hated it when we took off like that, but loved it cause I knew leaving Iraq and Afghanistan it was a piece of mind knowing g we were going to be out of range of just about anything thrown at us in a very short period of time.

    • @deathstrike
      @deathstrike Před 2 lety +12

      I worked on the C-17 Globemaster III. And the reason it can achieve a high AOA (Angle of Attack) is due to a combination of extremely high thrust to weight ratio (engines are rated about 41 thousand lbs of thrust). An ogival shaped fuselage, shorter in length but higher in top to bottom for cargo capacity. And an anhedral wing and lifting body surface with large, vertical vortex dissipators at the outer wing surface and high lift, lower drag Fowler Flaps for climb.
      It's a very impressive aircraft with sub optimal landing area capabilities and 2° slope climb on the ground, in reverse. The only limitation the C-17 has is range and that is partially mitigated by a large, internal (ER) bolt on fuel tank. Also mitigated with in-flight refueling. But realistically? It could land and takeoff at SABA airport. Even with a full load.

    • @deathstrike
      @deathstrike Před 2 lety +6

      Edit: For engine thrust I meant 41 thousand lbs thrust EACH. Total output 164 thousand lbs thrust. However, a leaked Boeing document has shown a possible C-17B model (Current model is C-17A) indicating a 30 plus foot fuselage extension coupled with larger Pratt and Whitney engines in the 50 thousand pound class. Giving the C-17B higher performance for the same fuel consumption as the current engines.

    A tip for taking off on short runways:The bad part about flaps is that they slow the plane down a lot. To get more speed when taking off you have to start the takeoff with the flaps off and put them to the maximum in the middle of the runway, just enough so that when you go to pull up, the flaps will be on.

    • @Zwia.
      @Zwia. Před rokem +2

      @@yaroslav429 не знаю, уважаемый, о чем вы говорите. О какой разрухе? Глупо сравнивать эти две страны. Был в России год назад (Путешествовал по Европе, в т.ч. посетил Украину и Россию, в РФ доехал до Бурятии, г. Северобайкальск). Так уровень жизни и качество инфраструктуры в России на порядок выше. Понимаю, что сейчас тяжело как то трезво оценивать, но я бы на Вашем месте не бросался громкими словами про «разруху». Всего вам хорошего.

    you would get a faster takeoff speed if you waited till the very end of the runway to throw the flaps. having them on the whole time creates drag that only holds you back. a plain hill take off at a certain speed and lift compared to the air. you can get to the speed faster and then throw in the lift and you will take off just the same but now you'll be going faster making it easier. same reason you pull up at the end and not the whole time.

    Maybe drop the flaps at the last moment, in that way you don’t have the drag penalty while accelerating. Also, some planes have a few meters of runway left behind the rear wheels. Use it all😀

    I'm surprised you never do the DHC-6 Twin Otter. Nothing says Saba like a white Winair Twin Otter with red and blue trim. The pilots make a big show out of driving off the cliff while using the flaps to keep that bird on the ground until the last second!

    Normally once you see a positive rate on the VSI its time to call for gear up.. in your case plane descends down into ground effect over the water.. gear up as soon as you lift off and leave end of runway should be the game plan
