    Said Barry "I've screwed up again!
    It's caused me frustration and pain,
    But the love of my life
    and the love from my wife
    help create sunshine in rain."
    With you buddy!

    Hey Barry! At around the 7:30 mark, you mention horrible storms and how you've had lightning strikes blow out equipment. I've had the same issues and what you need is called an "EMP Shield" which you can buy for around $300+ online. Have an electrician install the EMP shield at your circuit box in your house, then your entire house will be protected from lightning. It triggers so fast that it catches the lightning strike before it hits any of the circuits in your house. If it blows up due to lightning, simply send it back to them and they replace it for $50.

    Hey Barry, I use to watch your videos some time later after you published it. E.g. this video was posted 7 days ago as I watch it now. So, I didn`t hear the video you were talking about. BUT yes, I understand that this caused you a lot of trouble and I'm feeling with you. :-) Just one thing: You are the most humble person I know on the internet.
    About backups I can only confirm your advice and strongly recomment making backups. I personally do backups (and backups of backups, too). But once my significant other lost data from her doctoral thesis and that was a super-GAU. We could then choose to pay 2000€ for a professional data recovery of her storage or try a recovery on our own. We were so lucky to succeed by doing the later. The software and hardware (controller and stuff) ran 3 days and we finally could get about 95% of the data back. 🙂I could have been way more easy if there was a BACKUP!

    It's nice to hear that even brilliant people like Barry [who I know personally and vouch for being one of the smartest people I know] can overlook a simple solution. The tech systems we make up are so complicated that sometimes we can't keep them straight in our heads.
    If we have an extremely complicated process that is prone to small errors, the best we can do is make up a little flow chart, checklist, troubleshooting checklists, etc.
    It can just be burdensome to do that for everything.
    I'm interested to know if there are some good ways to step back and look at a problem to see those obvious solutions.

    I got you beat, 3 days in studio at Ladbrock Grove London finished the track and took the hard drive out the pc to go to the mastering studio (CD Burners were just too unreliable then) and went down the fire escape as it was a quicker way out the building. Dropped the hard drive which then bounced all the way down the steps and broke with no backup.

    yeah backups are key, when dealing with 1tb size files I can see how that can get costly as every TB might be $50 or so. It almost seems like buying dat or packs and cds and cassettes, treating each external SSD as an expensive ADAT cassette.

    I struggled with syncing the phone video (30p) with camera video for a long time. Finally found to do a clap at the front and end of that phone and then use the retime function on the clip in Final Cut to match it to the audio in say the 29.97 camera. That can save you a ton of time. Try to retime at 1% or something, then you should see a handle on the clip where you can drag it around and try to match the audio waveform of the claps. You're welcome. 😉

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  Před 2 měsíci

      Yep I do the clap, phone is set to 24 frames per second and camera the same, yet I always have an issue. I usually leave the volume of the phone up while going through and when it gets out of phase, I adjust.

    • @AdamGotheridge
      @AdamGotheridge Před 2 měsíci

      @@BarryJohns When you bring the clip into Final Cut, click it and look at that "I" icon on the right and make sure it says 24 and not 23.9x. That's how I found my problem because my camera (lumix) says say 30fps, but the video is really 29.97. Then I set the project to 29.97. The iPhone video is truly 30fps and it doesn't automatically retime itself when you bring it into the project and you have to do it manually. Just give it a double check to see if you have the same issue. It's worth 15 minutes to try to figure it out because it's a total pain in the ass to have to keep cutting and aligning the phone video as you go.

    What ? You bought ANOTHER converter which is NOT APOGEE Symphony ???? Man ???? 'How you do it ? ; ) THEY are The Queen of Sound yo . There is
    a secret hidden world in the depths of bass ; and only Apogee Symphony can show you this world

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I’ve owned several Apogee Symphony units over the years, I was an early adopter and they are truly great units. However, they don’t have all the features that the UFX plus does. And quite frankly when it’s all said and done, I don’t think the conversion improvement will matter in the end. There’s not a significant difference in conversion these days like there were in the past where it was significant.
