I was with protools for years until they went with the subscription. Now I'm happy with Logic and Reaper.
You are Reaping the benefits. That’s Logical. lol
waves are the masters of bug fix extortion......
I've never really felt that. Even without WUP, you receive all minor version upgrades. And even if you own every plugin they have ever released, the price you pay to upgrade to the most recent major version is $240, which is where WUP is capped. On macOS and Pro Tools, I've needed a major version upgrade maybe every three or four years; basically, whenever Avid or Apple does something that breaks the compatibility. Nowhere near Avid levels of extortion.
Left protools years ago for reaper and never looked back. Best decision I've made by far!
The fact that EVERYTHING is customizable in Reaper is reason enough to ditch the rest.
Been a Reaper user since version 2 but I have made the transition to Logic Pro three years ago. I always recommend Reaper to anyone.
Despite its clunky GUI, Reaper is probably one of the best DAWs.
@@houdinididiit I don't know if I would call it clunky but it definitely gives me early 2000's DAW vibes. Lol. Point being it works, it's a great value and stable. I got roped into using Logic and I have to say Logic's refined workflow is nice but I will always give kudos to Reaper.
@@marksaxon Yeah. You nailed it. Early 2000's. (I sometimes say Windows 98). I only fool with the "perpetual demo" once in a while because one day I'm hoping it will get a facelift. I'm just spoiled by a drag and drop workflow without all those popup windows, etc. Not gonna lie... that Dan Worrall among a few others tout it, it definitely makes me wanna go deeper.
Sadly, the reason companies charge for bug fixes, is because people will pay for bug fixes.
I put AVID and Waves in my rearview mirror couple years ago and haven’t looked back!
Paying for bug fixes? That's what Antares does for a living.
Left protools many years ago…..would have come back if they offered a one time perpetual license fee and maybe $50 per year to upgrade or at least $99! The prices are exorbitant for what you get ..so for now I use Logic and have no problems and no fees!
I’m primarily Logic but I love Harrison Mixbus 32C as it is a very refreshing way to work! Thanks for finally naming it among the DAW choices Barry! Love the channel.
Harrison is amazing, Midi could be better but overall it's great!
New CEO. Normal operating procedures for the new guy to spike the price.
Yea Now old CEO can offload shares, Hence Share price pump !
I moved on to Logic Pro a long time ago 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I never needed to move...been there since 1996.
Pros and Cons for sure. For me it always comes down to the type of work and/or the amount of collaboration you need (and no exporting all tracks starting at zero is not sufficient in all workflows)
Don't forget Ableton and Bitwig. Both have compelling features for creative production. As for Reaper, it is $60-225 for a license and it lasts for 2 major versions (that is years of use).
I moved to LUNA. Best DAW in the whole world.
needs work but is great.
You tell them Barry! I'm gonna be honest.. I still use Pro Tools, but can't stand Avid as a company... Like you said, keep prices where there are, but to raise them even more is absolutely CRIMINAL! I'm not ready to make the switch yet, but if they continue to raise then I will for sure
I keep telling everyone, LOGIC PRO is the way to go! Luckily 13 years ago I'm glad I chose it over Pro Fools for sure.
LOGIC PRO IS
A LOT OF BANG FOR
THE BUCK
AND PRESONUS
STUDIO ONE PRO
And ABLETON
F... Pro Tools
I moved to LUNA and have never looked back. Love it...
Same here. It’s the easiest transition from pro tools.
Studio One part time user here. It seems like presonus is going to the route that Avid is. It’s a shame. Sticking to Reaper for now as the business strategy is to provide maximum functionality at a low price
that’s cause fender bought them out.
I've decided to drop the subscription plan and go with a perpetual license. They just keep raising the price and not adding anything I personally use. I've been a PT user since 05 so I'm not in a position to just jump ship. I've been building a small HD system with a Native card and Omni. I could probably go all the way back to HD 10 and be fine for what I do.
Thanks barry for mentioning these updates, boy I love pro tools but Pro Tools just not considerate in so many areas.😢
I use both Pro Tools and Logic (I'm a home studio recording drummer). I still prefer PT's editing and track-organization workflows for recording, but it's nice to be fairly equally adept on both platforms. One is the most overpriced, and the other is the most underpriced, so they balance out. 😂
As soon as Avid started this weird subscriber policy I switched to studio one. I accepted to relearn every shortcut and workflow after 25 years. If I wanted to be addicted to something toxic and be forced to pay for it, I’d rather go with dope or prostitution
studio one is pushing subscription hard also
@@siewierap I see the point, but so far, Presonus is still acknowledging my 15 years long customer status, allowing me to update at very little price.
Avid, as a reward for my 25 years of protools (keep in mind that for the first 15 years you could only use native audio interfaces with PT, I’ve purchased 4 different models) is charging full price.
After 30 years with Cubase, I moved to Pro Tools Studio, I think it was right time to work with it. After 3 mounths now I'm fine with it learnd the every major aspects. I hope to contuniu, if can pay next supscription.
The car analogy it's just perfect to understand why not keep up with Pro Tools
Education pricing at 15$ CAD per month I thought was ok for me but I needed it for school, as soon as my education pricing expired I wasn't gonna touch pro tools again.
Couldn’t say it better myself. I went back through my avid account and just added up all the money 💰 I’ve spent over a 20year period and I wish I had it all back!!! Never again!!
If I’m not mistaken, Luna is the cheapest DAW right now. It’s free. You dont need an UAD interface anymore to run Luna.
The integration is 🔥and workflow.❤
There is a pro version I believe
@@thestudiosesh LUNa is completely free. But if you own an Apollo interface the device has capabilities that other interfaces don’t. Unison preamps…Luna can control the preamps. And there are other plugins(extensions) that make Luna a more analogue DAW that require UAD chips for processing. The LUNS software is the same but the presence of a UAD hardware device unlocks features that won’t work for third party interfaces. Is that what you mean?
@@nafawi7965I understand brotha I’ve owned a few apollos and thats my current interface but what I mean is that there is a pro version of Luna were you get Native plug ins in the daw without having any dsp card present.
I own all the DAWs and purchased a brand new Mbox Studio for $479 from Sam Ash. With the current Avid promo you get Pro Tools Studio perpetual included and I must say I like PT compared to Cubase Nuendo Logic Live FL Bitwig Reaper Reason LUNA Studio one. Great mixer Great editing workflow and something about that sound. Very pro and polished although I know it’s just zeros and ones
Doesn't appear that the PT Studio perpetual will increase yet....but I'm sure it will. Logic and Reaper are looking better everyday. Guess I need to dive into one of those in preparation to letting my perpetual finally go. At 200 a year to keep my perpetual 'current', it's already overpriced as it is. I think Avid will hammer in that final nail with the new rates. So if their plan is to price themselves out of business, then here we go. At this point Logic and/or Reaper seems the best route for me.
I would love to go back to pt. But never with those perpetual prices and stupit update prices
I have no idea why anyone would use avid or waves. Absolutely filthy companies.
What about working for surround and immersive and compatibility? For me that’s protools
The question is: Why do you pay for it???
Think about it. Some of us are still on Intel chips, others on Microsoft systems, other on Apple Silly Clown Chips. I would HATE to be a software deleloper in todays world!
facts.. intel mac user myself
I started with Mixcraft then... SoundForge, FL Studio, ProTools, Cubase, Ableton, Studio One and finally Reaper from all those DAW's Reaper has been the best of them all in every way.
Loved the video 😂😂😂. That’s Harrison Mixbus32C is their flagship DAW
Hi barry
love your show, this only affects people who put up with avid’s nonsense
I just bought the MBox Studio because it was on sale plus because it came with Pro tools studio perpetual license. But I totally agree with you Barry on there business in the past I hope they stay real with us from here on out.
That’s why I love studio 1. It works for me
As a long time user of Logic Pro, Reason, Bitwig and Pro Tools, I would agree that for music production purposes there are lots of excellent DAWS out there that are less expensive and actually superior to Pro Tools in many ways. However, when it comes to audio post production for film and television, the Pro Tools workflow and compatibility when working with other facilities still makes owning Pro Tools almost a necessity. I have never used Pro Tools for music production because I find it clunky by comparison to my other DAWS for that purpose. Conversely, I find that Logic, Reason and Bitwig simply lack the necessary tools and workflow that Pro Tools has for doing professional level audio post work effectively. That said, I HATE paying the exorbitant "Pro Tools tax" on my business every year. It's too high and it sucks!
No it is way too expensive, you are right.
That's why I prefer and will continue to love my Cubase! this video lovingly dedicated to Protools lovers!....
I use Maschine and Reason for composition, sound design and arranging, the I use Ableton and Cubase for editing, mixing and mastering.
I worked with the Avid (DigiDesign era and Avid Transition) Beta Team. Back when I was involved with the company they had some seriously talented and passionate people working on the Pro Tools and Air instruments. When they started with the massive layoffs something happened to the company culture. Sad cuz how I remember them was such a fantastic group of people. Most of those folks are gone now. 95% have left. About 6-7 years ago I decided to stop working on beta testing companies products and focus more on trying to make music that I actually like and ultimately I decided to transition to Studio One Professional. So glad I did. So happy with Studio One. Still use Ableton for some things as it’s just a blast to program in but in my opinion Studio One is the DAW from the future. Even if Avid invited me back for free (NFR) I wouldn’t do it. Avid like waves are behind me and I’m not looking back
I’ve used Pro Tools from 5.9 TDM until 10 HD… tried the trial version of 2018 and 2023 and for mixing I really haven’t into deep on those new versions to figure out the “big improvements” that I can’t achieve using Reaper…
Protools is not my primary DAW, and I do have perpetual license. However I am skipping my annual renewal this month due to my low usage of PT.
Ok.
Take your open hand and turn it palm up.
Next put your hand in a position as if you were holding a baseball.
That’s where Avid has you for as long as you choose to allow it.
Reaper is inCredible.
The Action List provides genius level customization.
Agreed, thank you. I have faced the same issue with Avid Sibelius, a program I have used and loved since version one. This may be the year I have to leave it.
If you're on Mac, you better get whatever gives you regular free updates. When Apple updates its OS, it'll break a lot of software like DAWs and plug-ins.
I was responsible for 3 studios. In my home studio I stopped with Pro Tools 10 but went back to Cakewalk products, currently using SONAR X3. Updating our college studio keeping it on the latest Pro Tools on Macs has been absurdly expensive with 14 licenses, control surfaces, and desks. And I also have Reaper but still prefer SONAR. Only 1 studio in my area is still on an older version of Pro Tools, pre subscription.
Reaper offers a limited amount of updates for a very reasonable cost. I paid $60.00 several years ago. I didn’t buy the update. When I start taking audio engineering classes at my local college, I realized it would be to me benefit to learn Pro Tools because it is the DAW they use their studios. I am now accustomed to using it. I can’t say Pro Tools is better than Reaper. The magic of any good recording or mix is in the technique and ears. Your DAW is probably the least important tool, especially for the home studio. Choose any one of them and learn it.
When you’re not attracting new customers you gotta gouge the ones you have left, and that’ll slowly turn them away as well. Definitely signs of a company losing steam.
Uncle barry! please talk about studio monitors. I’m on the market for some good high quality monitors and I’m very undecided on which one to buy .
Barry has a video on ADAM monitors. The ADAM monitors are a good brand to check out.
to be fair avid has had some game changer features for me the last few years and some of the newer features coming definitely are things i'd use a lot. it's my most expensive yearly expense right now. luckily my upgrade cycle ends in march and they usually have their big updates around NAMM or AES which is before that, so i can decide to upgrade or not depending on the new features. based on the cost of going off and coming back it may be worth it to upgrade every few years. But based on current bookings for the summer, i'll likely be using pro tools a lot this year so worth it to keep it up to date.
All that being said, i would never recommend pro tools to a new engineer/producer/artist/etc.
also reason why they're raising prices is likely because they were bought out by a private equity firm.
I own perpetual - but this year I think I will let it slide on renewal Im all updated and working in Mac OS Ventura. - My question is can I use my HDX system in other systems?
You can use the card / hardware as an 'interface', but you cannot run AAX DSP plugins outside of Pro Tools.
I've pretty much been a die hard Logic user and it works excellent for me. I have used pro tools and nuendo but always stuck with Logic. Thanks for the insightful vid!! Much ❤ BJ!!
Its crazy the ways you can program Reaper. Gives you the ability to customize anything.
Can't customize the way you comp takes. That's what drove me away from Reaper coming from Pro Tools. In PT it's a breeze and so neat. I found Reaper to be a nightmare. Studio One is better but I still think Pro Tools is the best in that regard and in editing generally.
@@MitchSumner Yes I have heard that people who come from ProTools do not like Reapers Comp system. I admit I do not understand the difference.
Avid charge the most and give the least - by far! The new features seem to be plucked out of thin air by the imagination of preschool kids (headed by product manager Rob D'Amico). They are so far out of touch with who their actual customers are and what they want. One thing that we want (and is a must for professionals) is stability. Coming from a coding background I can tell you that the amount of bugs that find their way into Pro Tools is completely abnormal and is the sign of a poorly managed and incompetent development team. The biggest problem I have with paying for bugs to be fixed is there is absolutely no intensive for Avid to employ competent coders as they directly profit from the bugs - it's like rewarding a child's bad behaviour with candy - Avid has become the spoilt brat that can get away with murder!
Perpetual license is the best way now! You may eventually have to update but hopefully after 2 years at $99
HI Barry, I'm brand new to recording and more. I'm was Ricky Lawson's drum tech for 22 years and have a degree in acoustical engineering. Recently I built my own studio and have an Avid Carbon interface. It's only 8 channels and need another 3-4 mics for recording. Is there any other way to expand my channels for recording other than getting an Avid Carbon Pre ? Also I'm learning pro tools, do you recommend any online classes ?
What exactly will change in May ? A price increase ?
As an HDX owner, Avid has us by the short hairs. Pro Tools Ultimate is the ONLY version that will run on HDX...so you cannot even use a lower priced version. I just renewed my subscription for another year, but I have serious heartburn over it. TBH I prefer working in Logic, and would be happy to do so if I didn't have that ROI guilt.
Short hairs is right! I get to the end of every project and some one needs something redone. Hdx hybrid keeps my monitoring real-time with out the mix changing at all - mibus ozone and all.
excellent
Bought the Pro Tools perpetual Edu License in 2019 for 300 bucks, when i was studying sound engineering. I like Luna a lot, probably because of the integration with my UAD x8 interface but i left Apple, because of the insane prices and upgrade ability and Luna is now out of reach, because its Apple exclusively. Took the chance to upgrade Pro Tools for 100 bucks from 2020.12 to 2024 Version a week ago. Upgrades are covered until May 2025. I'm totally fine with that. I have an actual Pro Tools version and a killer PC with loads of RAM and Storage and for a price where i probably had to sell a kidney to have a comparable Apple computer and Pro Tools nowadays works like a charm with Windows.
Used Cubase for awhile after decades with PT. Still have it as a backup, but am on perpetual with PT. Just couldn't take some of the dumb things in Cubase....file management is ridiculous, can't move tracks in the mixer.....ugh. PT is the switchblade of DAWS for me. I haven't updated in a year, PT working fine here daily!
The moment I laid eyes on Pro Tools I felt the crookery emanating from it and left it alone.
My experience too. Never understood why people think that’s what ‘pros’ use. I have logic and they treat people well, but now use Luna only
@@That.old.mountain Is Luna reliable at this point?
@@Drfresh1402 yes, I have no crashes or big bugs. UA are pretty dedicated to improving it to and when it has hardware outs and logic style comping, I think it will be 11/10. ATM it’s the best sounding daw I know and I highly recommend you trying it - it’s free
Studio One for me! :)
I love Studio One but have a few limitations on Midi controllers thats when I went for Reaper. If they fix that I would go back to Studio One.
I keep PT just for compatibility with other studios... I can't tell you how much I hate paying that fee every year.
I moved to studio one last year
Ayyyyyyyye!!! Barry’s Back!!
Good balanced opinion... thanks
There has been some good new features recently , however even with paying all that money I’ve had an update and then my rig didn’t work at all.
I’ve been using pro tools since 1996 and pro tools 5.1
With Mix + in an old G3 Mac. I originally paid over £40,000 UK pounds all in all for 24 ins and outs . So given these days it is a lot cheaper . However after using Logic and ableton . Cubase and studio one and digital performer and even LUNA . Which I just admit is really good .
But still these days I use Logic for MIDI and production work and always mix in Pro Tools . If I’m recording a band or many musicians I always record in pro tools . It’s just far better and quicker to me . Given that is the near 30 years I’ve been using it !
I also know a few people who work at avid . And know for sure they have recently made a lot of staff redundant . Fired many support and RND staff. So erm who knows what’s going on . I hate how much I have to pay. But it’s far better than anything else
I swear it's not April Fools Day
100% looking for ways out. We absolutely love Pro Tools so it saddens us. We purchase 3 ultimate subscriptions per year + S6. They must have no clue who the users are and what’s affordable.
Amen, Barry!
Had Pro Tools 8 back in the day and honestly enjoyed it. After one of your I hate Avid videos last year I was highly skeptical. Anyway, I got an MBOX Studio Interface with a one year subscription. I guess timing is everything, with their new management Perpetual Licenses came back (more likely because of your video! 😉) and they offered to convert my sub into a perpetual! So, I basically got Pro Tools Studio for almost nothing. 😎👍🏻
Hi Barry. Have you ever used LUNA? If so I’d love your take on it.
I tried to get into it, it just wasn’t my thing at the time. I should revisit it again sometime though.
Yes please do. I’d love your thoughts on it being a former pro tools user like myself.
I think Sequoia is still more expensive, FWIW. But, apparently Magix might be going out of business or something. IDK. I saw a press release in passing and didn't actually read it.
I really like Cubase. lol.
I got on the update train with A PC. And PT 8 fried my system; everybody works as is and doesn't bother. I like Logic does everything with no hassle. Like I've used them all. And it is a choice.
if you work in a professional environment and interfacing with other mixers/ video houses..... Protools wins 100%. AAF import alone is worth it.
HELL NO‼️
Dolby atmos constant updates are pretty huge and worth the prices for me personally.
There's Studio One and Nuendo had also Dolby Atmos.
This is infuriating as a long time pro tools user. I paid to update my perpetual license earlier this year and it was quite underwhelming. I’m hoping for some meaningful updates but not holding my breath. If there aren’t any this year I’ll be switching to logic next year.
@barryjohns I think we should also mention that they create things like Carbon and the Hybrid Engine, which doesn’t make sense if the the majority of plugins are not AAX DSP. As a HDX user you turn on the Hybrid Engine and suddenly all of your plugins are made inactive. If they are marketing the Hybrid Engine as a selling point for DSP users and charging us an arm and a leg, they should incentivize the development of DSP plugins.
I really don’t know what I’m paying Avid for these days.
Barry, what I do not understand is you left Pro Tools went with Cubase/Nuendo. You then discovered That pro tools went back to perpetual licenses and you left Cubase/Nuendo to go back to Pro Tools. Now your saying that Avid (Pro Tools) has raised the prices. Are you staying with Pro Tools or are you going to do something else? Sorry it is hard for me to figure it out.
I never left Nuendo, I use it the most by far and have for some time now. I applauded Avid for coming to their senses with bringing back perpetual of which I hammered them previously for.
@@BarryJohns Sorry for any misunderstanding. I thought you did a video where you went back to Avid Pro Tools. I am researching for a DAW is why I am asking.
@@braxal6983I agree I thought I heard that in a video as well so I too was confused.
I am now sticking with Protools 2023.6 because it works great and is the last version that works in Mojave. It is all super stable so I see no reason to change. I do use Reaper as well occasionally but prefer the editing in Protools by a country mile. Also, another funny side note is that it seems that Reaper is more CPU efficient and yet running the same track count in Protools my computer runs much cooler as far as overall CPU and RAM temperatures are concerned.
Went to Reaper and couldnt be happier. I just like the look of Pro Tools, so I use a Pro Tools Dark theme skin for reaper lol
Completely agree
Nice glasses Barry.
Crystal ball question concerning atleast Pro Tools; will Avid finally release a version of Pro Tools that no longer requires the use of PCI DSP and achieve extremely low latency for the pro market? Seems like atleast Apple’s upcoming M4 Ultra may facilitate this. Like I said “crystal ball”. TC!
I am letting my PT studio subscription go and buying Logic for my laptop. But I will update my Perpetual HDX system, it is currently on PT HDX version 18
LMFAO
OOOOooohhh Avid, you silly beach-heads!!!
Solid gold 🔥
Everyone should dump subscription-based DAWs whether it be Pro Tools, Studio One or anyone thinking to go that way. Just go to someone like FL (although, I do not use it) but if they are not subscription we all go to One DAW.
Yup,yup yup yup yup, Yup
Also tried them all, still love PT/hate Avid. If you deeply know PT it’s hard to replace it (as a mixer).
No subscription to software. I will never do it.
its mad that you have to pay for support. Tha is why people are moving to Studio One
