  • The Behringer Eurodesk MX 9000 is a 48-track, 8-bus analog mixer from the early 2000s. This is the main recording console at Dark Highway Recording, since it is only used for monitor mixing. I give a brief review, demo, and description of how it's connected to the surrounding equipment. Also some drama behind dealing with Behringer as a company. This is part 4 of my recording studio tour.

Have you ever used one of these mixing boards? What was your experience???????

I bought one broken. I fixed it in a few hours - was a single shorted ceramic capacitor on a mix bus taking down the power supply. It took longer to remove/replace all the knobs. It was actually an excellent board but was way more than I needed. I donated it to a music school in Cincinnati at one of the Sweetwater sponsored events around 2010.

My first studio in Rockaway Beach, NY had an earlier version, the MX-8000. We used in with 3 Tascam DA-38's synced together. Good times, loved those machines and got some surprisingly good mixes out of that board. I used to love that thing, but we all love our first mixing board....

I had one of the original, brown, MX8000 mixers which I bought new and used for several years without issues. 48 inputs with EQ at an affordable price were what sold me. It was a significant upgrade over the Seck 18-8-2 I had before it. I had the opportunity to see inside one later alongside a Mackie 8 bus at a friend's place and the circuit board inside was beyond similar, only different around the EQ sections, and it sounded, I thought at the time, pretty good. Later I had a chance to try out someone else's later, blue MX8000, and this one just didn't sound the same or as good to my ears. The MX9000 you have came out after, with the integrated meter bridge. I'd guess it's the same inside as the blue MX8000s. Incidentally, the Mackie and earlier MXs were even cross compatible regarding the add on meter bridges. I don't know if this is the case with the blue ones.
Behringer already had a history of putting out better (more closely 'inspired') products earlier in a product range and then cheapening them later on. One example is the original Composer compressors, which were remarkably closely 'inspired' by Drawmer units, and were a similar weight to the Drawmers, then later the Composer Pro came out, at about 1/3 of the weight of the originals and sounded very different (worse) by comparison.

I had the mx8000a for just over a decade and it was awesome. Great way to learn on for sure and was certainly a centre piece in the studio back in the day.

Hi iv got the 8000, with the bridge. I use it in my studio everyday, for all instruments, going off to my computer, running, mixpad pro. , it's been faultless, and awesome once I removed the 24 volt fan from the PSU and put in 12 volt fans One inside and one araldited to the heatsink on the rear. With a variable 12 volt PSU, running at around 5 volts. Now very quiet 🤐🤐. And the heatsink you could once light a cigarette on. 😮 Is now all but cold. As the original fan sounded like a jet engine and cooled -- well nothing, as the heatsink is on the back. But the desk. Has and iv tested it. Got a signal to noise ratio close to my Mackie digital desk, it's awesome. One fault iv always had is the bus led bars do not light. ??? But the busses are fine. Fantastic desk. Wouldn't part with it. ". I noticed the 9000. Has no bus led banks ?? Mmmmmm". 😮. Great vid.

I played with a band that had this as a monitor mixer and a Allen & heath for front of house. Lets just say it was rarely used for only big outdoor gig with multiple bands. When I joined the band for a short I told them to leave their consoles at home and we took my Soundcraft Series Five (not 5) console out for gigs, which had more features than both the Allen & heath and Behringer combined. The band ended up purchasing the Soundcraft Series Five from me and I replaced it with a Soundcraft MH4 for front of house and the MH2 for monitors. I stll have the MH-2 in my studio since it has 10 busses and 10 aux sends for headphone mixes in the studio.

The mx2642 was my first «big» mixer. Same colour scheme as the mx9000 although I think the flagship at the time was the mx8000. Was happy with it, had loads of functionality for the price and I had no real sense of what was good or bad sound quality. Which in hindsight I am quite happy about

Another issue is the voltage regulators in the power supply. I forget which ones (+/- 17VDC?) but they are under rated. I changed mine out and it worked fine after that.

If you buy behringer, you better have a good electrical engineer/repairer with a pro soldering gun and pro air gun. Their circuits are great but the parts die. You'll have to open it up and fix the horrible assembly line compilation. I actually buy behringer and modify them. I open it up and do a professional soldering and connection job. I had to reflash the EEPROM and chips on a behringer devices many times. I like behringer because I can download their circuit diagrams and by parts from anywhere. The expensive guys don't open source their circuits and usually require you to get a certified repairer.
    Good Video.

Inferior product or not, it's really a shame they don't make affordable large format analog consoles like this anymore. Now people have to choose between small boards, digital boards, or really expensive pro studio consoles.

They make some guitar pedals that are exact replicas of much more expensive circuits. The Deepmind and other synth clones are incredible. The XTouch series are wildly good midi surfaces for the money. Their patch bays are solid as heck and dirt cheap. If your emotional response to a brand name means more to you than the objective quality of specific products, that makes you a fool.

    • @artephank

@@PurpleMusicProductions it is not top of the line gear. And their morals are questionable. But there is no sense in denying one’s experience. I had zero problems with build quality.
