    Lol I was born in 88 so i grew up with oversized clothes. Its just how the era was. It wasnt even so much like, "you're mainstream, we're underground". Not even for the extra fabric/protection(?). It was just part of the style and we happened to skate. Why I say it like that is because skating kinda bled from rock/metal and into the hiphop community. A lot of times it was hand-me-downs so I had no choice. But, the style stuck and watching it come back brings me much nostalgia The "girl jean" phase was not the move. Lol its upsetting how hard it is to find good, affordable, legit baggy jeans without a fat price tag on it. But, ill be gotdamned if i spend over $30 on any kind of jeans. My girl loves me dressed up but also knows that my personality/attitude is hiphop, through and through. So, she digs the style that comes with the territory. No need to change your style to fit a fad or "skate better". Just be you; just like Nyjah is doing. Great skater who's put in just as much work as Shecks, regardless of what he decides to wear.

    I’m 26, I started skating in 2010 and used to watch my older brother who skated thru out the 2000s and still today. So for me it’s kinda weird seeing people not skate in slim or skinny jeans tbh. I still rock slim and fitted jeans. But people can rock what ever they want. Trends come and go is all I’m going to say.

      Same bro, I'm four years older than you though. I used to get made fun of for skinnies back in the day. It was funny to see the same people that hated hop on the trend. I do like the baggy/oversized look, but prefer it with something that's tapered. I used to get hated on hella cuz I had a couple pairs of girl jeans. It was harder to find skinny jeans back then (I was a broke kod too). All the girl jeans I had were from chicks I was cool with our had a thing with tho. I did have some emo/scene homies that straight up bought them tho.

      @@SockiThePoser I like to keep a little bit of both these days tbh. The thing about hella baggy jeans is i feel like you have to keep the whole fit baggy/oversized. It looks hella weird with a hella short ass shirt imo lol. Granted, I always loved oversized/boxy shirts, even when i was big into skinnies. Im starting to get older too, so its nice to have some more casual/formal clothes that actually fit me like they should too lol.. It is kinda dioe to see it come back though. All the old skate vids I used to look up to were big jeans, big shirts, small wheels, and thin decks lol.

    Personally, i am not into baggy jeans that much and i wear cargos. However i wore some classic sport style pants one day and my skating improved significantly. Instantly i could feel my ollies way better and overall more comfortable doing my tricks, maybe because cargos were a bit skinny and heavy. Maybe that's why nyjah wears sports gear as well.

    • @AndySo2000
      @AndySo2000 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Honestly Nyjah style shorts look like boxer shorts from the 90s. Also the reason you don't see pros in shorts is because they fall a lot and the pants are protection. The times I've fallen in shorts you can really get huge scabs, compared to the same fall in pants I'm probably not going to get a scab or scrape by knees up as bad. Nyjah wore baggy pants when he was a kid, it makes your skating look way more stylish too. Do what you want, but that small shorts thing is a bad look to the rest of us. Just being honest. Nyjahs not one to be like either! Skaters have been wearing baggy pants since the early 90s and the reason is to be able to move around more in pants.

    • @ChrisLKF
      @ChrisLKF Před 7 měsíci

    You don’t have to always wear what you do when you skate. I’m in a suit and white dress shirt everyday to work, but I skate in baggy jeans because I like bulky skate shoes like #808. Those just do not match with skinny pants (and I don’t feel comfortable skating anything tight). That being said, my wife doesn’t care what I wear when I skate because she isn’t around it then. Life is about balance and being adaptive. Cheers

    I'm 45, I started skating in 1987. In the 80s everyone wore fit or tight mom jeans which carried on until the 90s. The 80s was still stuck in the 70s a bit but everyone got tired of wearing bell bottoms and so the 80s came a more fit mom and dad jean type look. Super conservative era. In 1991 world industries released a skate pant company called Ghetto Wear which was short lived. Then World and Blind released Blind Jeans later that year which were extremely baggy exactly like big boys. I don't know if it was a fluke but they caught on and everyone mimicked pro skaters then so everyone started wearing them. Later with 101 fuct jeans/ pants. Skating was hated on in 1991 and practically dead in the late 90s. Then rappers started wearing baggy jeans at the time too. In 1992 grunge broke and everyone wore flannels and baggier cloths and skating got a nudge from grunge being so popular. From there everyone started getting baggier. By the late 90s/2000s everyone wore pretty baggy pants honestly, except for women being girly. In the late 90s-early 2000s underground raves were pretty big and then came jncos from the rave scene which kinda killed the huge baggy pant trend. Mind you skaters didn't wear jncos, it was ravers but those two things went hand in hand in that period of time being gen xers. Then in like 2010 there was the skinny jean trend which has never been a trend iin my life. Some people are still living in that trend even though it went out in 2017. Frankly I skate baggy cloths most of my life, just because Im male and need to let things breath when I'm skating and doing tricks. Lately mainstream follows skate trends for like the last 20 years, and its worse nowadays. Men especially shouldnt wear skinny pants, small shorts. Wearing skinny jeans is actually for women and needs to stay there. Because women are essentially showing their beauty with their clothing in that aspect. Men aren't meant to wear skin tight pants because of our anatomy. Sorry I have to explain this but people don't seem to get it. Men should wear a more relaxed fit style of pants, no poop butt baggy. There's a happy medium. I wouldn't wear polar big boys, but if i did I wouldnt go to work in them. But skinny was never really that great looking on men and now it's going back to how it was. Just wait everyone will be wearing loose fitting pants in the next couple years. It tends to come in go in some way every 10-15 years.

    I’m 30 and work in finance, so I kind of combine my styles.
    At work, with clients, it’s normal fitted business clothes. Without clients, it’s a combo. I might wear baggy khakis, clean (non-skated) skate shoes, and a looser Oxford shirt.
    When I go out, I’m normally also some combination of the styles, as well.
    The only time I go fully skater is when I’m skating. Even then, I’ve started to prefer bagging pants but less baggy shirts. I think mid-level baggy pants and more normal t-shirts look good. Or you can go baggy pants, a tucked in undershirt/wifebeater, and a more flowy over shirt

    My wife hated the Chinos era so I got lucky with where skate stuff is now. If I wore big boys I know I'd get clowned on, but wear the Levi's 550 '92 taper and she digs em. Relaxed fit so they aren't too baggy and the taper at the bottom helps with preventing the bulk of your pants bunching at the bottom-best of both worlds with a modernized twist on the nostalgic 90's feel. I feel comfortable in what I'm wearing now and will probably stick with it-Im assuming if the mid 2000's style comes back around(which was horrendous looking back) it's gonna be in 5 years and ain't gonna back it. No one wants to see skin tight pants on a 40 year old dad bod with some bulky cup soles, all over print shirt and a fitted new era hat. 😅

    I prefer to skate in shorts, like long dickies shorts. I find brands that are known for workwear - dickies, carhartt, etc. are good for skating. Usually decent material quality/durability and also made roomy enough to move around in for physical labor/skating. Now that it’s cold I’ve been wearing long johns underneath. So I get the range of motion of shorts and my legs aren’t cold. Plus since the legs are tight they don’t get caught in my bike chain without having to roll them up. I just wear what’s comfortable and functional, couldn’t really speak on fashion or trends. I can say with jeans I usually go a bit bigger in the waist, bc I’m on the east coast and it gets cold so I often wear several layers

    I was a teenage skater in the early 2000’s so of course baggy pants will always have a nostalgia factor to me. I was still skating during the skinny jeans years and I followed the fad, well not really skinny pants but not baggy either. Now I rock the Nyjah’ s jock stile, I love in a super hot country and I think shorts are just way too comfortable when skating. That is unless I want to do some bigger tricks than usual, then I’d go for baggy but not denim, it’s just too hot

    I’m from the late 80’s, and I’m not sure if you remember, maybe you were too young, but we had jnco jeans, which were super baggy. With that being said I don’t think the trend will go towards skinny again for a while, maybe another 10 years or so. You are right skate culture is counter culture, Ali Boulala would wear skinny jeans ahead of its time, along with some other skaters, but those are a few of many; while there is some truth to having more flexibility with baggy clothes, that’s no longer true, as many companies have created flex jeans, so technically there is no need for the baggy clothes, mind you, you probably still want some looseness, so straight or slightly relaxed clothes. More fabric does not make clothes stronger or last longer, unless they are not flexible and tight, then they might tear, but not matter how baggy your jeans, they will not last longer, that’s up to the material being used. Last point, you know you don’t have to dress like a skater all the time, right?? You can have your skate clothes and regular going out clothes, like normal people lol; you have casual, business casual, comfortable, dressed up, and more styles; just dress for the occasion.

    Great vid! When I started skating the skinny pants craze was really in. I remember going to the women's section at ross and getting the tightest pants I could find. I just started wearing baggier pants this year cause I thought skinny pants made me feel like a kid haha and baggier stuff seemed more adult like. After studying some fashion It seems like it doesn't matter it's more of how you style things, like colors, rule of thirds, etc.

    I think what you said about nyjah is wild. Not that I think you’re wrong necessarily, but the idea that you would be shunned from the skate community for not wearing a skater uniform just sounds painfully stupid. I mean I’m sure it happens, people judging people for their appearance, clothes, shoes, etc, but they’re not the people I would want to be around anyway.

    Ever take a board to the nuts in skinny jeans? Just kidding, It is about the culture, and style. If you look at skate culture in the 80's in California you had these small brands, as well as small apparel brands which kind of merged in the culture. Brands like Jeco, FUCT, Chapter 7, Limpies, and SOC where all staples with skaters in the South CA area which I can speak on. This was spread word of mouth, and buy small skate brand zines. Many of the smaller brands came out of the apparel district in L.A. and started by hardworking people with big dreams. The largest brand to come out of that ethos would be American Apparel, but all the major skate brands co-oped the apparel brands into their own. #skateordie #uplandpipeline
