KSP 2: Visiting the DRES CANYONS!

- In today's Kerbal Space Program 2 video, I decided to visit one of my favourite destinations from KSP 1 - the Dres Canyon! It turns out Dres now has THREE canyons, and they look pretty impressive. Unfortunately, many kraken attacks and bugs happened throughout our journey, but we struggled through regardless!

Please note that this video was recorded BEFORE the latest KSP 2 patch, so there may be bugs shown that are no longer present in the current version of the game. I haven't had a chance to play the new patched version yet but I am told the manoeuvre planner tool is a lot better now, and that we can now see our trajectory past planets and moons!

And suddenly KSP 1, well known as being buggy and home of the Kraken , became a solid piece of software and a safe haven..who would have expected that before its descendant was released.
We took so much of it for granted
So true I have KSP1
@@spider-juan1568 so do i. i'm just messing around with propeller planes
To be fair, making a game such as KSP must be really difficult. I should give some more credit for the developers for reaching this far.
@@YourBoss_CORP bro it was delayed 3 years
There was a wormhole orbiting the North pole of Dres. While attempting to calculate a maneuver to return to kerbin, the ship passed through the wormhole, which sent them back in time to the KSP 1 universe. They made it safely to kerbin and later climbed into the CERN particle accelerator to return to their own time.
Only Kerbals would think of a particle accelerator as a viable means to travel.
i think you mean the KERM(n) particle accelerator?
@@J-IFWBR indeed
A KSP 1 Easter egg could be fun. Like one of your old ships derelict and abandoned somewhere.
@@thedatatreader Might not be a horrific idea with the proper setup
The sound engineers for this game must be so happy, ok so some planets don't have their own music yet but no-one complains about sound bugs and more than half the Ksp2 vids I've seen give up so much love for the sound (desrvedly), thanks Matt, can't wait to see what you can do post patch!
Fun fact Matt, I got to speak to astronaut Josh Cassada while he was in space! It was part of a ham radio contact at my high school. A handful of students got to ask him questions, it was a very cool and amazing experience.

I’m jealous
You know at this point they should keep track of all the bugs and glitches and compile a list and once they fully release the game they can add a game mode where these glitches are intended features. Like when your orbiting your orbit can just instantly drop to 0 like at 11:00 and you'd have to adjust for that. Or one of your solar panels or landing legs could just disconnect like the glue they used to keep the craft together was covered in crumbs (presumably snack crumbs), could be a really fun/infuriating challenge.
Pretty sure there is a parts failure mod like that (sorta) for ksp 1... it has a funny acronym or joke name that I can't remember...
@@Charon-5582A bit like that Apollo 13 inspired mission where basically everything breaks
Your videos make me excited to play KSP2!
Once 90% of the bugs are gone, of course.
Seeing Matt Lowne exploring the KSP 2 Planets, is really cool!
It hurts to read this comment

Spot on: i watch Matt play KSP 2 so i don't have to suffer through the Kraken, but still get my dose of KSP2 per week 😂
Is it weird that I'm going to miss the bugs when they are gone? It makes the commentary so much funnier 😂
I call it “The Bethesda Effect”. Bugs, if tackled in a certain way, make a game if not better, at least funnier.
@@dysfunctionaldragonborn I personally think any games with bugs that aren't frustrating and don't randomly happen(depending on the game) should keep those bugs.
Makes sense, many of them are definitely amusing.
The only problem is when you’re the one recording
@@soviet_doge1263 coffee stain does that in their games and i love them for it mostly satisfactory there a cool bug with hypertubes that make you go at mach speed and they kept it lets game it out made a video with hypertubes definitely recommend it
I mean yeah but i am also used to the no bugs of ksp 1
Switching to KSP1 at the end reminds me of the plot to Planet of the Apes, but in reverse. They went out to space, and experienced time dilation such that the apes had enough time on Earth to take over. You went out to space, and experienced so many bugs that you had to return to Kerbin in the original game (backwards in time).
dres is certainly underrated, change my mind
Dres doesn't exist
What is a drees
I forgot about Dre(s)
Dress? What are you talking about???
It’s a big myth, doesn’t really exist, like the spiders on Duna
As someone who worked close to a graphic designer for a while, I can assure you that the sketch you sent the designers for the Kraken Slayer merch is probably the briefing they think up in their wet dreams. The one I worked with usually got a one to two sentence "description" of what the person wanted and the rest was guesswork.
Maybe it's not like that in textiles, but with online banners that used to be what the designers had to work with ;)
matt, you have been doing an amazing job with all these ksp 2 vids!
The real Jebediah commenting while stuck for all eternity in space orbiting around Kerbol.
Yes, we appreciate your masochism.
It's good to hear from you, Jeb. I thought you were a green stain on my runway
For a moment there your mother ship seemed to be hanging in the sky exactly the way that bricks don't . Neat trick!
It’s so weird how they added this brand new, super cool body in ksp 2.
I’m so glad that you’re doing a mission to the new planet they added in KSP 2! I particularly like this new planet’s rings!
Its not new...
Is this a joke?
@@vonknorring09 Dres wasn't real until they made a new planet in KSP2
Matt, you are the reason i got into KSP and i love it so much so thank you i am just about to launch my first space station, wish me luck!
Dres has grown from a lump of coal to a beautiful potato planet
The triumph and excitement when the KSP1 theme played is real. ❤
Nothing like a Dres mission, it's like a bonus planet it's so seldomly visited.
why in the world is watching Matt with the bugs more fun then without the bugs?
Cause it's like watching Apollo 13.
Looks like the game is coming along nicely. Hopefully a blast by summer when I plan on getting it
They’ve done a great job reducing bugs with the for science update, though imo there’s still a significant amount of bugs. I still have to walk away and take a break at times because of the bugs. It’s definitely way worse with really large vehicles. Hopefully they continue on this pace and keep cleaning up. I’d play lots more!
06:35 "These are not bugs, guys! These are features!"
That's me. Everyday. During work.
So, I'm new to KSP, enjoying the early access, and find videos like yours extremely helpful, not only for the tips and examples you're sharing, but also for the basics that you may not be aware, but you're sharing nonetheless. When you make a comment like "if you need tutorials, you should just not play, wait till they fix all the bugs", it's a complete buzzkill. We've got a few weeks of gameplay under our belts, I think anyone who would be turned off by bugs would have probably given up by now. If we're still playing at this point, we can tolerate the taste of insects. You know what's worse than the bugs in the game? not knowing if your rockets are failing because of the kracken, or if they're failing because you're a noob who didn't strut everything, or some other rookie mistake. Tutorials and guides would really help a lot. But whether you offer such advice or not, I'm going to keep playing, learning, and having fun regardless.
Even though I probably won’t be able to play it for a long time, I am really enjoying watching the ksp 2 gameplay!
I ran into the missing orbital trajectory on my first trip to the Mun in KSP2. As at least a partial result of this, Bob got stuck in orbit around the Mun. I sent a recovery ship to save him, but his vessel obviously still did not have a trajectory shown. After a lot of time and tears, I successfully rendezvoused and saved Bob. It was probably the hardest and also probably one of the most rewarding things I've done in KSP.
Wish I had known about the JSON edit tho.
Short time lurker here. Just wanted to say that your work is an instant favorite. Your humor and quirks are delightful, your knowledge and self awareness are refreshing, and you are simply entertaining to listen to regardless of what is happening on screen. Thank you for all the hard hard work!
I have had good luck with dropping the "docking acquire force" to 0 for both ports before undocking and it seems to help.
Love these KSP 2 vids
8:30 - That encounter was probably so bad because if you have the rings showing the entry and exit points of SOI directly on the opposite sides, it means that the central body doesnt change your path much, which means that your periapsis isn't close enough for the gravity to affect you much. Maybe somewhat counterintuitively, you want those circles to be almost as close to each other as possible without crashing into the planet (or moon), that way you know your trajectory is passing very close to the surface.
Although now that *that* bug seems to be fixed in KSP2, this might be a moot point...
I just visited dres for the first time in ksp 1 yesterday, its pretty cool.
Docking for me has been pretty manageable. I have a video on my gaming channel with some cool docking mechanics but the video I’m working on now will definitely show a massive kraken on duna 🤣🤣
Btw loved the ksp1 switcharoo 😏 it’s so good.
Love the content Matt!! Keep it up, you have helped me a-lot :)
23:10 I confirm that I'd rather watch you play ksp2 than attempt to myself. I did reinstall ksp 1 after the first ksp2 video ^^
I can't believe he rage quitted to KSP 1 😆
I can see building a designated canyon racer and delivering it to the canyon beeing a fun mission!
New series ideas:
Mission Moho
Venture to Val
Exploring Eeloo
Discovering Dres
"I'll just watch Matt suffer through this game" is, unfortunately, exactly where I am with it. You know me surprisingly well for someone who doesn't know me at all.
Build a bridge over the canyon that a rover can drive over!
I played KSP2 once when I bought it and logged out after the first random loss of vehicle... Played once after the patch and logged out after the first random loss of vehicle. I will give it more time to marinate but I have plenty of hope. Thanks for all your work to keep us entertained ML!
When time warping you don't need to launch another vessel, rather than going from your shop to the tracking station, go to the ksc then go to the tracking station. Then you can time warp as fast as you want
Yep, that's a fix in the patch.
23:10 That's exactly it. I want to play KSP2, but watching you suffer is so much more enjoyable! Hahaha!
glad u randomly popped up, ive been needing more ksp2 videos
I come for the video, and I stay for your amazing commentary. Keep it up.
I had the same issue with the clamp-o-tron. I ended up just using a separator coupling like you did in between stages for separation which worked well. I also ran into the issue of when Jeb would exit the landing craft to get back the the main craft then Jeb and the landing craft would suddenly start dropping while the main craft would fly away (in orbit). Debug was a useful feature. I did use a two stage lander which ended up having a large gap in between the lower and upper stage, and somehow it still worked. I did end up successfully visiting the larger canyon and it was worth the struggle.
Hey Matt, I had a build idea for you.
I thought about a wild idea where a 300t or so gyroscope were placed outside the gravitational influence of earth/kerbin. This gyroscopic giant would spin at 5000rpm give or take, creating a sizable gravitational field.
The theory is that you can use the gravitational field to add a huge amount of boost to a smaller vehicle with a perfectly done slingshot maneuver around it.
Thank you in advance, and have a wonderful day.
i LOVE the 4th wall break going into the save file and fixing it in the video. Great work Mr. Lowne!
edit: AND GOING BACK TO KSP 1 TO FINISH THE MISSION HAHAHAHA
Hello, love your ksp2 videos keep up the good work
"its my favorite hoodie which means i never wear it."
🤔
"im afraid ill spill red wine on it. i never drink red wine"
😵💫
matt are you ok? build a purple ssto if you are being held hostage
I loved that ending
Idea! Everytime you go to say "the correct angle to transfer is..." Put a clock face on the screen with Kerbal, Kerbol and the destination in the correct places =D
I think my favorite video from yester-year when you first started was a sea plane and submarine you took out to the Joolian system with Modern Warfare 2 Boneyard chase music. I go back to that ine quite a bit. Probably needs some love.
Also the first video of yours I saw.
Love the the nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey , with Bill Kerbin during the load screen
22:22
"Fix Time 2 Electric Boogaloo" HAHAHA
Your videos warm my soul
I've been waiting for this all day
"... in case I spill red wine on it even though I don't drink red wine." Funny.
the detail of the ring leaving a debris trail on the equator. damn dres looks good.
its funny watching these videos, because my name has dres, or drez in it. So glad you wanted to visit me. Have a nice safe flight back home.
I love this video. I am sorry KSP 2 is buggy. Keep slaying the kraken. If you can't do it no one can. You are a true kerbalnaut. Please do the remastered version of 2015 dres canyon buggy!
I got ksp:2 a week ago and I am absolutely loving it
Make ksp1 vids featuring blackrack’s volumetric clouds. Like maybe visiting all the planets with atmospheres.
27:09 actually got me laughing at the end there.
your commentary ontop of the gameplay makes this video that much better
Matt’s the best for taking all of the bugs and attacks of the kraken.
23:01 yeah you caught me. That, and I don’t have a computer powerful enough to even attempt playing it.
The Devs dres ed up Dres with new dres ings.
I really hope they make the maneuver node manipulator visible through planets. I made a post on the forums about this because zooming in and out and moving the camera every time you want to make a single adjustment is insanely maddening. Also the destroy button has burned me so many times
150 cans of beans
150 cans of beans
151 cans of beans.
152 cans of beans
wow i miss that ksp1 music thanks for adding it on this video!
Cool to see the new Dres planet up close like this!
Ikr, I just wish they told us they were modifying the stock system before hand
Oh, Matt.... fairing?
Ya still need a fairing to look cool.
"Oh my gosh, guys, I just remembered I was supposed to be talking about what was going on on screen" - Matt, every single time
to me it doesn't matter if you tell us what happens in a video, i will always watch the entirety of a matt lowne video :)
Your merch is OP!
The best thing about KSP 2 is that KSP looks even better ^^
I heard in an interview that on eve there was some mountain that stuck above the cloud layer, the devs saying that they made that in mind for colonies, to drive rovers with ship building resources up the mountain. The whole idea of seeing a sea of clouds sounds awesome. When the bugs settle down, you should try and find that!
Are you talking about my interview with the devs lol
@@MattLowne lol i thought that was billy winn junior for some reason lol
When KSP 1 song starts playing I laughed so hard 😅😅 seemed like a hero theme playing in a hopeless situation
I love the thumbnail mirror with the other Dres Canyon from 3 years ago
Dres certainly has some stylish rings.
Probably the cheapest way to visit Dres is to intercept it where orbital planes of Kerbin and Dres intersect and only fix the inclination as you brake to Dres orbit. Then you get to do the inclination change near apoapsis of your orbit where you are the slowest and can even pull some discount from Oberth effect on Dres.
Finaly someone visiting Dres... Poor Dres
Wow! This may be the earliest I’ve ever been!
Hi matt I love your videos keep up the good work
Sorry for the struggle but the content is amazing
Hello Matt, I visited Ike the other day, you should definitely bring a rover to ike and do a soapbox race down the volcano, the terrain is stunning there!
I love these videos
The canyon is giveing me pod racing vibes
Yay! Another video 😁
For Matt’s sake, I hope some of these bugs are fixed in the first patch! What a struggle!
reminds me of the first time i went to a super deep canyon in elite dangerous. they look surprisingly similar as well.
I tried to watch the video…but it ended up being about a ship falling through space after a blip on the radar. Alas the legend of Dres continues…
I hope the patch really did solve a lot of these problems, and making content becomes much easier and more enjoyable for you. People seem to be pretty happy with it.
You need to do a single launch surface base with a rover to pol those spikes with jool in the background will look amazing. But have fun with the kraken if you do this
I was waiting for matt to shut himself into the shower again! G8 vid keep up the good work
i appreciate the og ksp music :)
Great vid! Love your stuff. Have a question about farings in general. Is delta v saved from reduced drag with a faring more than delta v saved from reduced weight without a faring? Basically are they really worth the bother?
Awesome video! Why no KSP2 music? The ambient music is from KSP, isn't it? 😆
I love the sales pitch
