KSP 2: Base on the Surface of JOOL!

  • Given that Kerbal Space Program 2 is still very early access, it has a lot of interesting quirks, one of which being that you can actually land on the "surface" of Jool, the game's only gas giant! I figured that this will get patched out at some point, so I decided to seize the opportunity and colonise the planet's surface with a large base and 2 crew rovers before it gets fixed!

My theory for Jool having a surface is that they got it for free with the planet-sim code and it's good enough for now. They do seem to be avoiding doing unnecessary work (e.g. optimizing code now when that code's just going to be thrown out later) so implementing a kill radius might be counter to a feature they're considering / testing, like actually simulating pressure... Those two reasons are probably also why buoyancy is so janky; the buoyancy system in KSP 1 is kinda a simplistic hack, but a full pressure and displacement sim is a lot of work.

Suggestion for a mission that couldn't be done in KSP1/KSP2 once finished: (Assuming your frame-rate would let you film it, of course) Rescue the kerbals you just landed on Jool - they currently have no escape system, and with the extreme gravity of Jool a rocket to successfully land and retrieve them would need to be huge (most likely substantially bigger than an Eve lander I'd guess)

Jools surface is probably a temporary requirement for the game. Given that all other planets have a surface it was probably hard coded that the planet requires a surface in order to be properly simulated. As such they gave Jool a temporary placeholder surface to avoid potential errors when doing planetary simulation. Also could be a placeholder for what will be the death plane. Just a guess though. I do hope they do more with gas giants eventually allowing you to build super rigid probes to decend super deep into the atmosphere where the only light you can briefly see is that of lightning storms or maybey the molten core.

Mission idea. Have you ever tried simulating the Lunar Escape System (LESS) concept? The idea was to give the astronauts on the lunar surface of way of getting back to the orbiting command module should the Lunar ascent module fail to function. I believe they were thinking about extended stays on the moon, and were concerned that after sitting idle for an extended period the lunar module may develop faults that would prevent it's safe operation.
The concept was for a very simple, lightweight system that could be packed into the Lunar Module, and brought out and assembled if needed. As I understand it, it was basically a couple of chairs ontop of a bit of a truss frame, with a small amount of fuel storage and a rocket underneath. (Ok, stating it was underneath might be redundant..... you're hardly going to put it ONTOP of the astronauts you're trying to save....)
There was to be minimal instrumentation, as far as I can tell basically an attitude ball and a clock, and no autopilot or anything. The exact details vary, as there were a number of designs submitted, the simplest of them had no means of control, other than by the pilots literally shifting their weight, but most had at least some means of control, either by gimballing the rocket nozzle, or RCS or something.
As far as navigation goes, they knew they had to try to maintain a specific heading, which was achieved by land marks on the moon, and they'd have a pitch program, so X minutes and Y seconds after takeoff, hold this pitch angle on the attitude ball, Z, minutes and T seconds hold this attitude, etc etc, at a a specific time, shut the engine off entirely. If they followed this exactly, they should theoretically have ended up getting an orbit that would rendezvous them with the command module. Of course, this wouldn't be very precise, so they also had a VHF beacon, so the CM could locate them, and adjust it's orbit, within it's fuel budget at least, to rendezvous with them.
Would be cool to see you try something like this, specifically launching from the Mun with limited instrumentation, and being able to make the rendezvous happen with a limited fuel budget in the orbiting stage too.
If you want an added challenge, add a time limit, the LESS concept called for the astronauts to use their spacesuits for life-support, so they would have had 4hrs total to rendezvous with the command module before they ran out of O2.

Maybe that darker layer is all dense gases and the sheer air pressure and gravity would make it nearly undergo deposition? So technically it would feel like ice, you'd need paddles and you'd sink a little way into the surface as the extra weight of you and your vehicles would cause the gas to depose just underneath and it would slide about like if water under you in a lake here on Earth was freezing immediately, allowing you to just barely balance upright mostly out of the water and the moment you take a step, the other foot would sink a bit deeper as more water spontaneously becomes ice to keep you up until your other foot comes down and some ice melts from the other foot while water freezes under the foot you just put down. That'd be trippy as hell but very cool.

I’d rather have cloud cities. It’s kind of just plain unrealistic, and the KSP style seems to be going with realistic planets with unrealistic colours

KSP2 devs want physics to be actually be simulated and not faked, which is why they are using joints and not combining parts into a single rocket mesh. They could just make the joints rigid and add animation, or increase the strength of the spring/hinge joints; though that would create more lag. The only real solution would be Unity's DOTS system.

With KSP 1, I had to go use a bug with fairings to get a spacecraft with launch clamps over to Jool to make a Joolian surface base, and still had to use the cheat menu to make sure it didn't explode during that.
I guess the KSP2 developers decided to optimize that idea a bit.

Mission idea: Rescue mission for the kerbals you just stranded in a location that they'll be crushed at some point. Would have to land on and take off from Jool's surface, which sounds quite challenging, but also very fun to watch.

I don't think stock parts have the delta V for a flight from Jool's surface to orbit and, even if they did you'd still have to deal with atmospheric drag which would kill any launch attempt.

because IRL Jool is the Size of earth so yea it would have a surface now atmosphere pressure may be 90 or 200 you can land and walk but it would be hard it would be hot you could probably survive for 1 mins with a normal Nasa suit but with a built suit made for it probably a lot longer yet again Kerbals are small they could have tough muscles and tough bones we dont know they could handle higher pressure easily we dont know so in long terms Jool is the rough size of earth in KSP
