But I guess that wouldn’t make the ‘message’ of this movie clear…

Or cause of the fact that if they had him saying "Sic semper tyrannis" 60%+ of any audience would have no idea what he said was in Latin and 90%+ would have no idea what tf the English translation is.
And having him say just the actual English translation, "Death to tyrants" wouldnt have the same effect for a number of reasons. Namely they dont wanna end with being labeled as the movie that called a beloved American president with a tyrant. And you know mfs would try to say they did. I can see the headlines now, "Hack 'ALT'-Historical Drama Fresh from Woke Commiewood DECLARES Lincoln a Tyrant!!" or "New Apple Films Appeases Liberal Elite Masters Stating, 'Abraham Lincoln was a TYRANT'" or "Honest Abe Becomes a Dictator in New Ante-Bellum Period Piece. @@dec6124 Why not simply use the original Latin phrase with subtitles? The context should be clear from the scene and the broader movie plot. It could be maliciously misinterpreted, but the possibility of a bad faith reading is hardly a good enough excuse to misrepresent history in a movie that purports to be a historical narrative.

The story of the Union soldier who killed Booth at the barn is fascinating. Sergeant Boston Corbett was a hat maker before the war. He was exposed to mercury and some speculated that this made him go a bit crazy. He later moved to Boston the city of his name and he essentially believed himself to be almost Christ like. He was so fundamental that he became a eunuch. During the war he was captured and sent to the notorious Andersonville prison. He saved some men there who were dying of thirst by retrieving water from behind a “no go” zone. Boston Corbett amazingly escaped Andersonville. After the war, Corbett spent a life being threatened by Southern sympathizers and he spent time in an insane asylum. He later was said to have fled again and headed to Mexico. He essentially disappeared.

Johnny Booth was a handsome devil
Got up in his rings and fancy silks.
Had him a temper but kept it level.
    Everybody called him Wilkes.
Why did you do it, Johnny?
    Nobody agrees.
You who had everything, what made you bring
    A nation to its knees?
Some say it was your voice had gone.
    Some say it was booze.
They say you killed a country, John
    Because of bad reviews.
Johnny lived with a grace and glitter
Kind of like the lives he lived on stage.
Died in a barn in pain and bitter
    27 years of age.
Why did you do it, Johnny
    Throw it all away?
Why did you do it, boy
Not just destroy the pride and joy
    Of Illinois
    But all the USA?
Your brother made you jealous, John.
    You couldn’t fill his shoes.
Was that the reason, tell us, John
    Along with bad reviews?

"The doctrine of habeas corpus is the right of any person under arrest to appear in person before the court, to ensure that they have not been falsely accused. The US Constitution specifically protects this right in Article I, Section 9: “The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.” Lincoln initially suspended habeas corpus in the volatile border state of Maryland in 1861 in order to try large numbers of civilian rioters in military courts and to prevent the movement of Confederate troops on Washington. The order was eventually extended in response to different threats. In the summer of 1862, President Lincoln had called up the state militias, leading to increased opposition to the Civil War within the Union. By General Orders No. 141, September 25, 1862, Lincoln subjected protestors to martial law and the suspension of habeas corpus." He enacted martial law. Don't be so dramatic regarding suspending the constitution. And you can clearly see in the quote why it was necessary. I am glad that he did it.
